Glenn T. Gutgsell, 94, of Emporium, PA passed away at UPMC Cole, Coudersport, PA on Saturday morning, December 23, 2023. He was born June 16, 1929 in Grand Rapids, MI, a son of the late Norman and Frances DuQuette Gutgsell. On November 8, 1952 at St. Mark Catholic Church he married the late Alice Hornung.
Glenn graduated from Galeton High School in the class of 1947. After high school, he served with the U.S. Air Force for 6 years. He was stationed in Japan, during the Korean War and honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant. Glenn retired from Cameron Manufacturing as a machinist where he had worked for many years. He also drove school bus and was the weekend security guard at Sintered Metals for many years. Glenn served as a past commander of the VFW Post 6221, was a past Exalted Ruler of the former Emporium Moose Lodge, and served as an officer in the Cameron County Bucktail Rod and Gun Club. Glenn also was a deputy game protector under Norm Erickson. He was a member of Potter County Historical Society and a life member of the Cameron County Historical Society. Glenn was an active member of St. Mark Catholic Church.
Glenn was a kind and gentle soul dedicated to his church and faith, which helped to keep him strong. He loved to tinker, fix and resell; if you ever needed anything, he had it. He was always researching the history of Cameron and Potter Counties, which kept his mind sharp. He had a deep love for the outdoors, especially during hunting and fishing season with his brother, Jerry. You never knew what was curing in the fridge. "Papa G's" greatest love was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His eyes would light up upon seeing them no matter how he felt that day.
Glenn is survived by four daughters, Rea Ann Mallery (Bob), Portville, NY; Frances B. Klock (Randy), Pleasant Gap, PA; Pamela Keirle (Steve), Myrtle Beach, SC; Regina Smith (Bill), Emporium, PA; 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren; brother, Mark Gutgsell (Dottie), Coeur D' Alene, ID; sister, Venita Myszkowski (Jerry), Simi Valley, CA.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Matthew G. Gutgsell; two brothers, Dean and Gerald Gutgsell; sister, Mary Erickson.
The family will receive friends on Thursday morning December 28, 2023 at St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 E. 4th St., Emporium, PA from 11:00 AM until the time of Mass at 12:00 PM, with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant. A Military Service will follow by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.
