James E. Sinner

James E. Sinner, 70, of Medina, passed away suddenly early Saturday afternoon at his home.

James, or Jim and Jimmy to his friends and family, lived a life filled with adventure, friendships, laughter, dedication to his profession and an endless reservoir of love for his family.

Born on Aug. 29, 1951, in Perryton, Texas, Mr. Sinner moved to Syracuse as a toddler with his father, Emiel R. Sinner and mother, Theodora A. (Delaport) Sinner. He spent his childhood reading comics and also about science, hiking trails near his home, working with his father’s vending machine company and feeding his natural curiosity.

His years as a young man were filled with the markings of a life well lived. He hiked, camped, played in rock bands, owned a lumber business and a horse farm, and even went to Woodstock in 1969.

After putting himself through Syracuse University, earning a bachelor’s degree in cellular biology, he worked within the health care industry, developing an interest for hospital administration, eventually earning himself a master’s degree in the field from Scranton University.

After marrying the love of his life, Katherine A. (Lewis) Sinner, in 1982, they started a family, giving birth to a daughter and son in 1984 and 1987, Ashley R. Sinner and James P. Sinner, respectively. Mr. Sinner attended countless soccer and football games, wrestling matches, track meets, birthday parties, graduations and events surrounding his children’s life, which he loved so much. There was never a summer where Mr. Sinner didn’t take his family on a journey somewhere to be together.

In 1989, he accepted administrative positions at Grover M. Hermann Hospital and Harris Hospital in Sullivan County, New York, and purchased a piece of property in scenic Callicoon, New York, where he built countless memories with his young family.

By 1999, Mr. Sinner moved to Medina with his family, accepting a position as the hospital’s chief executive officer until 2013. He was not one to retire fully. He dedicated his time to working with nursing homes and overseeing smooth operations at a number of facilities around New York state.

He will be missed endlessly by those who adored and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine Sinner; daughter, Ashley Malpiedi; son, James P. Sinner; son-in-law, Justin Malpiedi; granddaughter, Macie Malpiedi and grandson, Ryan Malpiedi; and sister, Kathryn Swan. He was preceded in death by his mother, Theodora Sinner and father, Emiel Sinner.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24, at Cooper Funeral Home, 215 West Center St., Medina. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Parish, St. Mary’s Church, 211 Eagle St., Medina.

Causer Announces Local Fire, Ambulance Grants

BRADFORD – Fire and emergency response organizations in Cameron, McKean and Potter counties have been awarded nearly $400,000 in grants from the state, Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) announced today.

“Our fire and EMS companies across the state, and especially in rural areas like ours, are struggling financially and these grants go a long way toward helping to meet their needs,” Causer said. “We owe a great debt of gratitude to the men and women who work so hard to protect our communities, and I am pleased we can continue to support them with this valuable funding.”

The funding comes from an ongoing grant program created by the Legislature and administered by the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and Office of the State Fire Commissioner (OSFC). All funding comes from the proceeds from slot machine gaming, and not General Fund tax revenue.

Since its inception, the program has provided approximately $7.8 million in funding to fire and ambulance companies in the three-county area. Projects eligible for funding include construction or renovation of a fire or ambulance company facility, purchase or repair of equipment, training, or reduction of existing debt. This year, the funding may also be used to offset revenue loss due to limited fundraising opportunities resulting from COVID-19 restrictions.

Earlier this week, the House and Senate approved the use of $25 million in federal stimulus funding to provide additional support to EMS companies. That bill is pending the governor’s signature to become law.

Following is a list of local fire and ambulance companies and the amount of their grant awards. All companies that apply and meet requirements outlined by OSFC receive funding.
