THIS SATURDAY! Camp Forgotten!

THIS SATURDAY! Camp Forgotten!

This movie will be shown Saturday November 14, 2015 from 1-3 PM at the Chamber of Commerce at 34 East 4th street, sponsored by the Cameron County Historical Society.

In 1933, during the worst depression the US had ever seen, President Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps . Over a ten year period, this work relief program employed over three million young men between the ages of 17 to 25. They were placed in camps located in America's wilderness and put to work restoring damaged natural resources. The camps were run by the army, while the work projects were supervised by the Department of Agriculture and interior. Thesemen fought forest fire, repaired damaged river banks, built parks, planted forests engaging in thousands of conservation projects a legacy we still enjoy today.

Although this film is based in Michigan it mirrors what took place here in Cameron County in our (6) camps that spanned the entire county. Much of our forest that we see today was replanted by them, Sizerville State Park, Three Runs Tower Rd., Jerry Run Rd & Trail, Pepper Hill Foot Trail and constructed telephone lines from Emporium to Sinnemahoning and so much more.

The movie will take about an hour leaving the balance of our time for those who might have local CCC memorabilia they would like to share with the group or possibly descendants of CCCer's who want to share their our personal stories.

We'd love to see ya. Grab a grandparent, another family member or a friend and learn the history behind the CCCers at the Chamber of Commerce in Emporium, Saturday November 14, 2015 1-3 PM
