Sinnemahone 50K More than a Trail Run

It began as an idea almost two years ago,  an endurance trail run using the Elk State Forest.  This Saturday, October 19 that idea becomes a reality and the day has blossomed into a “something for everyone” Saturday.

At 7:30am almost 80 runners will begin a 10 hour race when Emporium native Jim Kempher fires off his cannon.  The start of the race is at the intersection of the West Creek Rails to Trails and South Broad Street.  The inaugural run involves more than 30 volunteers who will man aid stations and provide emergency response if necessary.

Thirty minutes later a group of bird watchers will meet at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Office.  That group will take a one mile walk with Emporium native Mark Johnson.  Johnson is a noted bird enthusiast and has led numerous groups on expeditions across Pennsylvania.

Meanwhile along North and South Broad Street and East and West Fourth Street vendors will be setting up their tables to turn downtown Emporium into a Fall Flea Market.  Items for sale will include antiques, clothing, food, candles and many merchants will host sidewalk sales.

Lunch will be available in the Zito Media Parking lot on South Broad Street, and music will be provided by the Down County Country Boys starting at 1:00PM.  They will be performing  in the pavilion on South Broad Street.

The first finishers are expected to cross the finish line in the early afternoon.  Participants will be treated to lunch by Pizza Palace Plus and a massage by Marsha Hendrickson.  The public is invited to congratulate the finishers and learn how they train for such a grueling event.

At 5:00pm Cameron County Fireworks will dump the ducks for the Firequacker Duck Derby off the South Broad Street Bridge.  More than 600 yellow quackers have been adopted for the race.  The first three finishers will win cash.  Spectators are encouraged to gather on the bridge or at the finish line in South Park.

The day will finish with an awards ceremony on South Broad Street, where wooden medallions will be presented to finishers and those with the top times will be given trophies.

The Cameron County Chamber of Commerce is serving as host for all the activities and questions or those wishing to participate in any of the activities should contact the office at 814-486-4314.
