Leo J. Main

Leo J. Main, 85, of 193 Meadow Rd., Emporium died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Sunday, July 24, 2011 afternoon following a lengthy illness.

He was born October 27, 1925 in Port Allegany a son of the late Walter L. and Alice Cowan Main. He married Virginia Nellis Main, who Survives.

Mr. Main retired from Mallory Lumber where he worked for many years. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Dr. Phong Nguyen has joined the medical staff at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital.


Specializing in anesthesiology and interventional pain management, Dr. Nguyen earned a medical degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, completed an internship at Heart of Lancaster Hospital, a residency at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital where he was named chief resident, and a fellowship in interventional pain management at Michigan State University. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiology and American Society of Regional Anesthesia. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 814/274-5228.

Emporium Downtown Businesses Lining Up for First Friday

Friday August 5 Emporium will celebrate First Friday. It is a promotion to highlight businesses in the downtown and encourage folks to mingle and shop at stores. “Communities across the nation host First Friday events,” according to Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Tina Johns Solak. The event will take place from 4 to 7 pm.


Businesses participating include Good Earth Partners highlighting plants that are drought tolerant, Emporium Pharmacy with a 15% off promotion of all gift items, Reid’s Hometown Emporium offering back to school supplies, Mountain Laurel Credit Union will show off its new location on West Fourth Street, Fox’s Pizza Den in Emporium will debut hog wings, Aroma Café & Restaurant will offer walleye, Cameron’s Beauty Salon will have an open house, Northwest Savings Bank will honor customers with free cookies, Flowers N Things will have cash n’ carry bouquets available, Floor Masters will open its doors to musicians for a jam session and the chamber office will offer wine tasting.

Edmund N. Holt

Edmund N. Holt, 79, beloved husband and father, and son of Edmund Z. and Catherine  (Stascavage) Holt died quietly at home surrounded by family on July 16, 2011 from aggressive  cancer. Ed was born November 13, 1931 in Kingston, PA.

 He graduated from Emporium High School in  1950 then served in the US Army stationed in Japan.   Following the Korean War, he worked at Sylvania,  initially as a machinist and 38 years later retiring as a tool and die maker.  While  employed at Sylvania, Ed met his future wife Gladys. After marrying in 1956, they built their home overlooking West Creek, mostly with their own  labor.    Ed supplemented his Sylvania income with a variety of second jobs, including:   proprietor of Holt’s Gun Shop and Realtor with McBride and Sanderson.  Ed also found time  for a wide variety of interests, always learning something new.  He was a very competitive  target shooter and an avid hunter.  He enjoyed boats, motorcycles, ATVs, geocaching, being a  webmaster, computer social networks,sports cars and piloting his own plane at various times  in his life.  But of special value to Ed was the lifelong friendships formed during these  activities, In particular, the friendships formed at Keystone Park Airport.

  He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 yrs, Gladys (Hill) Holt.  He is also survived by  his six children:  Catherine Foltz Holt,  Edmund Holt II,  Toni Momose,  Alison Holt-Kalish,  Heather Larry, and Benjamin Holt, and their spouses Curt, Debbie, Craig, Scott, Dave and  Renee, respectively.  He is survived by 17 grandchildren and by 3 great-grandchildren.  He  is predeceased by his parents, an infant brother and one granddaughter.

 Visitation with surviving family will be at the United Methodist Church, Emporium, PA from  7:00 to 9:00 pm on Thursday, July 21 and from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Friday, July 22, followed  immediately by a memorial service, also at the United Methodist Church.

CCMH to use appointmen​t reminder system

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will initiate a new appointment reminder system for its office practices as a service to its patients. The automated system, which will be activated over the next couple of weeks, will call to confirm patient appointments. After a brief introduction from Charles Cole, the message will update patients with the date, time and location of scheduled appointments. Patients will have the option to conveniently confirm or cancel their appointments via their phone’s key pad. Patients are encouraged to listen to the entire message as the system is designed to remind patients of all appointments including coordinated multiple appointments on one day. “This new process is being implemented as a service to our patients. We hope that by offering a friendly reminder of scheduled appointments two days in advance, patients will be more likely to receive the healthcare they need. We hope our patients find this service beneficial in helping to manage busy schedules,” said Janice Walters, executive director, revenue systems and primary care services.

Numerous complaints of ATV's being operated on the highway in various locations throughout Cameron County have been made to Pennsylvania State Police in Emporium.

State Police remind you: ATV's are not permitted to be operated on the highway and if encountered, enforcement action will be taken.

CCMH, Hospice to host Lifetimes Retreat

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital and Potter County Hospice will host a retreat for children 6-14 who are grieving due to death, divorce or other loss.The third annual Lifetimes Retreat provides activities for children to express their feelings and work through the grieving process. Knowing that children grieve differently than adults, the retreat allows children to talk with other children who had similar experiences and to realize their feelings are normal. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., August 10 at the Patterson Cancer Care Center. There is no charge for the event and lunch is included. CCMH childbirth classes have been cancelled

The childbirth classes have been cancelled due to low enrollment.   Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will hold prepared childbirth classes from 7 to 9 p.m. on Wednesdays, July 13 through August 17, at CCMH’s Wellness Center in Coudersport.

Police Notes

A Gifford woman was transported to Charles Cole Memorial Hospital by Emporium Ambulance after falling asleep at the wheel Friday at 39 minutes after midnight, her vehicle striking two other vehicles parked in a driveway.


Heather L. Coon, 22, of Gifford, PA, sustained injuries of unknown severity, when her 1996 Nissan Maxima drifted off the right side of the road. Coon lost control when attempting to steer back onto the roadway, causing her vehicle to fishtail. It slid off the roadway onto the right berm and struck two vehicles, a 2005 Chevrolet Colorado, and a 2009 Pontiac G6 that were parked in a driveway along Rt. 155 , north of 4 Mile Road in Shippen Township, Cameron County.

The Nissan continued into a yard at 3200 Sizerville Road before coming to rest. Coon was cited for Careless Driving by State Police.

After an Emporium woman was stopped by troopers for a traffic violation on Tuesday at 1:14 pm on 5th & Walnut Street in Emporium Boro, investigation revealed that Tawnya McCurley, 48, was under the influence of alcohol.

Charges against McCurley are pending results.

Unknown actor(s) broke into a camp owned by Donald Richard Bernardi of Pineview Drive, Elizabeth, PA, and located at 263 Sterling Run Road in Lumber Township, and removed various items between May 31 and July 6.

Gasoline Stolen

Between the dates of 7-5-2011 and 7-7-2011, unknown person(s) removed gasoline from the gas tank of a 1990 Chevrolet Blazer owned by Aloma J. Rudolph of 6741 Route 120 in Shippen Township, Cameron County, while the vehicle was parked in her driveway. Estimated loss is $25.00.

Cancer support group to meet

A cancer support group will meet at 7 p.m. July 18 at Charles Cole Memorial Hospital’s Patterson Cancer Care Center. The group, Sassy Survivors, is informal and open to anyone with cancer, families and friends. For more information, contact facilitator June Buckler at 647-8618

First Friday Event Coming to Emporium

Communities across the nation host First Friday events. For the first time Emporium will promote the event. “It is an opportunity for businesses to offer later hours and often times they have sales or special promotions inside the stores,” explains Tina Johns Solak, executive director. The Cameron County Chamber of Commerce & Artisan Center is encouraging businesses to extend hours on Friday August 5.

It is hoped that each business owner in Emporium will come up with a unique way to encourage shoppers to visit their stores. In other communities the focus has been on artists. Musicians have been invited to play at stores, artists have been invited to set up demonstrations.

At the chamber, a wine tasting event will be held. Wine from regional wineries will be showcased. The cost is $10.00 if the attendee brings a glass….$15.00 if the chamber provides the glass. Emporium Pharmacy intends to offer 15% off gift items in the store, Northwest Savings Bank will highlight customer appreciation, and FloorMasters are inviting musicians to jam in their storefront.

Businesses planning to participate are asked to contact the chamber to coordinate the event.

Paul E. Powell, Sr

Paul E. Powell, Sr., 85, of 2 E. Second St., Emporium died at Sena Kean Manor, Smethport on Monday (July 4, 2011) morning. He was born August 17, 1925 in Jimtown, Oklahoma a son of the late Thomas J. and Velma Jones Powell. On June 10, 1967 in Sweeden Valley, PA he married the late Esther Rosette Callahan Powell.


Mr. Powell served with the US Navy during WW II. He was a retired welder and was a member of the Pipleliners Local 798 in Tulsa, OK since 1953.

Pearl I. Grove, 91, died at the Guy & Mary Felt Manor on July 3, 2011. She had been a resident at the home since February 2009. She previously lived at 4 Warren Boulevard, Warren, Pennsylvania.

      Born January 20, 1920 in Diamond, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Marion and Olive Thompson. Her brother, Leroy C. Thompson, died on September 10, 1989.

Pearl was married to Merle K. Grove who preceded her in death on June 24, 2003. She is survived by three children, Shirley G. Wagner and her husband Robert of Warren and Englewood, Florida, Edward K. Grove and wife Judy of Sheffield, and Ronnie M. Grove and wife Debra of Emporium. She has five grandchildren, Robert M. Grove of Sheffield, Lori J. DaffSiggins of Center Twp., Dianna L. Sadler of Center Twp., Denise M. Lubold of Tidioute, and Kristina L. Grove of Emporium.

She enjoyed bowling, traveling, gardening, and spending time with family and friends. She was a member of the Covenant United Methodist Church. Burial will be at the Warren County Memorial Park.

 A memorial service will be held at the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home on Thursday, July 7th at 1:00 pm with Rev. John Gerber and Rev. Seth McClymonds officiating.   Visitation will take place two hours prior to the service.    Memorial contributions may be made to the Covenant United Methodist Church, Warren or Hospice of Warren County.

Emporium PSP is investigating an incident of Loitering and Prowling At Night that occurred on Saturday at 12:38 am at 922 Sizerville Road in Shippen Township, Cameron County.

A St. Marys couple was injured last Friday at 8:50 pm on Route 120, a mile east of Driftwood in Gibson Township, when their motorcycle hit a deer in the roadway.


Stephen D. Brunner, 52, and his passenger, Deborah L. Bruner, 50, of Saint Marys, PA, were transported to Elk Regional Medical Center by Emporium and Sinnemahoning ambulances for treatment of moderate injuries.

They were traveling west on Route 120 when a deer ran onto the roadway in front of their 2009 Harley-Davidson Soft Tail Deuce. Brunner was unable to avoid the deer and struck it with the front of his bike. The bike fell onto it's left side and came to rest.

No charges were filed.

A passenger sustained a minor injury in a crash Monday at 1:10 am on Route 120, south of Pine Tree Road in Shippen Township, Cameron County.


James B. Cooney, 25, of Emporium, PA, was a passenger in a 2005 Nissan 350Z, driven by Dale T. Hammersley, 28, of Greensburg, PA, who was not injured. Both were wearing seat belts.

The crash occurred as Hammersley accelerated at a speed too great for his ability to maintain control. The Nissan spun approximately 45 degrees counterclockwise prior to striking an embankment off the left side of the roadway.

The vehicle sustained moderate damage and was driven a short distance from the scene. Hammeersley was cited by State Police for Roadways Laned For Traffic.

No injuries were reported in a 3 vehicle crash at 4:15 pm last Friday in Emporium Borough.

Donald P. Kudrick Jr., 47, of Coudersport, driving a 2005 GMC Sierra, was stopped on Allegheny Avenue waiting to pull into a business.

Amanda M. Kraft, 23, of Emporium, PA, driving a 2008 Kia Sportage, was stopped behind Kudrick's Sierra, waiting for him to proceed.

Robert M. Hauber, 34, of Austin, PA, was westbound and failed to stop, striking the Kia Sportage which was pushed into Kudrick's Sierra.

None of the drivers was injured. All were wearing seat belts.
Hauber will be cited for (not) Driving Vehicle At Safe Speed.

A Pittsburgh man was moderately injured when his 2007 Toyota Tacoma rolled over on Route 120 in Shippen Township, Cameron County on July 1 at 7:15 pm.


Robert J. Michalek, 74, of Pittsburgh, PA, was transported to Elk Regional Medical Center by Emporium ambulance. State Police described his injuries as moderate.

Michalek was traveling east in the eastbound lane of Route 120, traveled across the westbound lane and struck the north embankment, then rolled three times, coming to rest on it's wheels about 10 feet off the roadway. He was wearing his seatbelt.

He was cited for Driving On Roadways Laned For Traffic.

CCMH Heel Screenings

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will offer heel screenings from 1 to 3 p.m., July 15 at the Women’s Health Center in hospital’s Irwin Medical Arts Center. The cost is $10. Call 274-8200 for an appointment.  Heel screenings give patients a preliminary bone density score (T score) in a matter of minutes. Low scores typically call for a more thorough exam. Those who should receive a heel screening include women over 65 or who have had an early menopause or hysterectomy or other hormonal depletion, men over 70, men and women taking certain medications or certain cancer treatments, those with risk factors or a disease or condition that can cause bone loss, and men and women who eat a low calcium diet or have had significant height loss

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital will host a fibromyalgia support group at 6 p.m. July 11 (the second Monday of each month) in the hospital conference room.Terri Cooney leads the group to provide support and education to patients, family, caregivers and anyone interested in learning more about fibromyalgia. The group provides coping strategies and moral support as well as boost awareness about the illness. Since being diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2005, she has researched the illness extensively, including various treatment options.  Cooney is a retired high school English teacher with 16 years of experience. She is also a Reiki master and teacher and is experienced in a number of mind/body therapies such as meditation, biofeedback, yoga and hypnosis. Citizens & Northern Bank 2012 Calendar Photo Contest

Citizens & Northern Bank is looking for images that capture the beauty of its market area of Bradford, Cameron, Lycoming, McKean, Potter, Sullivan and Tioga Counties in Pennsylvania and the Canisteo-Hornell region of Steuben County in New York. Photos from all four seasons are needed. A panel of judges will select the winning photos, which will be published in the 2012 C&N calendar on a non-exclusive basis.

 A total of 13 photos will be selected - one for each month - and the Grand Prize winner, which will be published on the calendar's cover. The C&N alendar is widely anticipated each year and is distributed through our 26 offices in Pennsylvania and Canisteo and Hornell, NY. Each winner will receive a cash prize

Driftwood Car Crash

A Driftwood man was injured in a crash at 5:15 am Tuesday morning on Route 555 in Gibson Township, Cameron County.

William A. Tompkins, 60, of Driftwood, PA, was traveling east on Route 555 when he fell asleep while negotiating a right hand turn in the roadway. His 2003 Chevrolet Silverado struck a dirt embankment off the north berm.

Tompkins then drove to his residence and contacted Sinnemahoning EMS who transported him to Elk Regional Health Center for treatment of moderate injuries.
State Police said Tompkins will be charged with Careless Driving.

Police Reports

State Police are investigating a report of a prowler at 11:37 pm on June 25th at 907 Sizerville Road in Shippen Township. Rick Copp, Jr., Emporium, PA, is reported as the victim.

A travel trailer camp owned by James Fragale, Emporium, PA, and located at the south entrance to Old North Creek Road on Route 46 in Shippen Township was broken into between June 23 aqnd June 25. State Police are investigating.

Unknown Actor(s) removed two cases of Miller Lite beer from the fridge after forcing the rear door open to a camp owned by Fred Manginell of Emporium and located at 700 Waldy Run Road in Shippen Township, Cameron County.

The burglary occurred between 6-19-2011 and 6-24-2011. State Police are investigating.

Unknown actor(s) Entered Camp Shamrock on Mason Hill Road in Lumber Township, Cameron County between May 28 and June 24, 2011.


The actor(s) gained entry to the camp by prying 2 lock hasps off the door. Nothing was discovered missing from the camp. Anyone with information about this burglary is asked to contact PSP Emporium at 814-486-3321. Trooper Farabaugh is the investigator.

Troopers are probing a burglary that occurred last Thursday night at a residence located on Township 316, 1 mile east of Township 318 in Shippen Township, Cameron County.


Unknown person(s) pried open an entrance door to the residence of Clifford D. Singer, Emporium, PA, and once inside, removed a pair of jeans containing Singer's wallet. The persons then proceeded to Singer's vehicle that was parked in his driveway and pried open a rear window, removed two packs of cigarettes and fled the scene.

The value of the stolen items is $458.00 and damage was $125.00. Investigation is continuing. Anyone with any information is asked to contact PSP Emporium at 814-486-3321. Cpl. Michael A. Ireland is the investigator.

Officers from PSP Emporium are investigating a theft by deception that occurred at various locations throughout Portage Township.


The known suspect sold items for a fundraiser and the money was never turned in nor the product given to the victims. The investigation is continuing.

Free skin cancer screenings @ CCMH Patterson Cancer Care Center

CCMH Earns Joint Commission Accreditat​ion

Charles Cole Memorial Hospital has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of ApprovalTM for accreditation for its critical access hospital, Medicare/Medicaid certification-based long term care, and home care programs.  CCMH achieved its most recent accreditation following rigorous on site surveys for each of the programs in March in which the hospital again demonstrated compliance with The Joint Commission’s national standards for quality and safety.

 CCMH has sought Joint Commission accreditation for more than 20 years. Theft from a motor home in Driftwood

A theft from a motor home in the Borough of Driftwood is under investigation by State Police.

Unknown suspect(s) forcibly entered a 1975 Dodge motor home owned by Jeffrey Smeal of Driftwood, PA, between June 12 and June 21 and removed miscellaneous tools from it. The value of the tools was estimated at $115. and damage to the motor home at $75.00.

Austin D. "Augie" Kowell

Austin D. "Augie" Kowell, 78, of 84 Valley View Rd., Emporium formerly of Monessen died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys Wednesday, (June 22, 2011) afternoon.


He was born February 23, 1933 in Monessen a son of the late Paul and Mary Watovich Kowell. On January 3, 1960 in Emporium he married Janice Broker Kowell, who Survives. He and his wife were married over 51 years.

He graduated from Monessen High School and served with the US Army reserve. Augie had worked at Sylvania, for over 38 years, where he was a tool and die maker. He later worked at Caldwell Corporation for 10 years. He was a member of the American Society of Tool Engineers (ASTE). He was a the owner of the former Kowell Family Restaurant in Emporium and also the caretaker of Newton Cemetery for over 21 years. He had been a member of St. Johns Russian Orthodox Church in Monessen. He was a avid Pittsburgh Steeler fan.

Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium.

ArtFest Features Activities for Children

Budding artists will have the opportunity to create masterpieces during ArtFest on Saturday, July 2. Volunteers of the Community Chest will man booths while children paint rocks, make Uncle Sam hats, or receive tattoos in the form of face painting! The booths will be located on North Broad Street and will be open 10am-4pm. Students in the The Skills for Life Class will display stained glass projects on North Broad Street.


Many non-profit groups from the community will also be selling items. Sylvan Heritage Council will have fresh lemonade, mint tea, strawberry shortcakes and pottery highlighting Emporium and Cameron County. CCHS cheerleaders will offer popcorn covered in chocolate or caramel. The Men’s Club will serve up hotdogs, The Baptist Church will dip ice cream, the Fair Association will have funnel cakes for sale and Storm Football volunteers will make hot sausage sandwiches.

The booths will be open 10am-4pm. Activities will then begin at the Cameron County High School with fireworks to blast off at dusk.

Helen L. Dale

Helen L. Dale, 67, of 4 Front St., Apt #4, Emporium died at her residence on Monday evening (June 20, 2011).

She was born May 18, 1944 in St. Marys a daughter of the late Harold and Francis Linsey Bailey Haskins

She married Dave Dale of Emporium, who survives.
Mrs. Dale was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

William L. "Triple P" Summerson Sr.

William L. "Triple P" Summerson Sr., 81, 214 Columbus St., St. Marys, died Friday at the home of his son, William Summerson Jr., Cuneo Road, Kersey.

Born Oct. 10, 1929, in Sterling Run, he was a son of the late Fred Leroy and Mary Devling Summerson. He was married to Jo Ann Means July 5, 1954, in the Shiloh Presbyterian Church. She preceded him in death July 29, 1997.

He retired from the Bureau of Reclamation and had also been employed at the Mallery Lumber Company in Emporium and at Keystone Carbon Company.

He attended Sterling Run Schools and lived in St. Marys since 1992.

He was a veteran, having served in the Army during the Korean War.

He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6221 in Emporium. He enjoyed traveling, his trips to Salamanca, and being with his family and friends.

He is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth (Lisa) Wehler of DuBois, two sons, William L. (Melissa) Summerson Jr. of Kersey, David M. (Lynn) Summerson of Emporium; a sister, Bibanna Park of Emporium; three brothers: Donald Summerson, of Dover, Robert "Jerry" (Cindy) Summerson of Cameron, Steve (Marge) Summerson of Emporium; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Kenneth E. Rees, 74, of 218 Summit St., Austin, PA died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Friday night (June 17, 2011)


He was born September 9, 1936 in Costello a son of the late Roberta Rees Cooney.
On March 12, 1955 in Coudersport he married Janice Williams Rees, who Survives.

Mr. Rees graduated from Austin High School. He retired from Walmart in St. Marys where he worked for over 9 years. He enjoyed carpentry work.
