This Friday, July 4, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) will host a Fish for Free day to allow anyone (resident or non-resident) to legally fish on all Pennsylvania waterways. No license is required, but all other fishing regulations still apply. This is a great way to expose the next generation of anglers to the outdoors! Program Title: Red, White, & Blue Scavenger Hunt

This July, the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library invites young creators to dive into two vibrant, hands-on art experiences as part of our “Color Our World” Summer Reading Program series—no reading signup required to join the fun!


TUESDAY, JULY 15 | 3:30–5:30 PM 
“What Kind of World Do You Want to Create?” with John Schlimm 
Ages 5–18 Award-winning artist, author, and educator John Schlimm returns to host a dynamic two-part program:  LOVE YOUR BRAIN!
 World Map – Be among the first to take part in this new participatory art project, where guests will stamp their mark on a large map using colorful ink and a “LOVE YOUR BRAIN!” stamp, celebrating the power of creativity and imagination to change the world.

 Create Your Own World 
Using Styrofoam globes and a rainbow of crafting supplies, kids and teens will build a 3D version of their ideal world. What will yours look like—underwater cities, candy mountains, floating forests? 
Schlimm shared, “This library has done a tremendous job of transforming itself into a welcoming, community-based space for all ages where open minds, dreaming, creativity, learning, and fun always have seats at the table.”


 THURSDAY, JULY 17 | 2:00–3:30 PM 
Watercolor Workshop with Janet VanEerden 
Ages 5–12 Little artists are invited to pick up a paintbrush and bring an adorable clownfish painting to life in this kid-friendly watercolor session with ECCOTA artist Janet VanEerden. 
No experience needed—just imagination and a splash of color!

This program is offered in partnership with the Elk County Council on the Arts (ECCOTA) and with generous support from the Friends of the Library.

Ham & Cheese Sandwich Fundraiser

The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library is excited to launch a brand- new fundraiser this summer—and it’s serving up a whole lot of hometown flavor!

 Introducing the first-ever Ham & Cheese Sandwich Fundraiser, inspired by none other than the legendary creations of Mrs. Strycula, a beloved former teacher whose sandwiches are still fondly remembered by her former students.

 From July 14 through August 1, community members can preorder one of these classic ham and cheese sandwiches—stacked on a fresh Kaiser roll with mustard and served with a bag of Lay’s chips—for just $6. Sandwiches will be ready for pickup on Friday, August 15 from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM at the library.

 Local businesses are invited to join in by requesting a group signup sheet and enjoying free delivery to their location on the day of the event. 

To place an order or arrange delivery, patrons can call the library at 814-486-8011, visit the library’s Facebook page, or their website at  https://barbaramoscatobrownlibrary.org.

 “We’re so excited to bring this new fundraiser to the community, especially one that taps into such a warm, nostalgic connection,” said Librarian, Yelena Kisler. “Mrs. Strycula’s sandwiches were legendary among her students, and now everyone has a chance to enjoy them—while supporting the library!” 

Special thanks go out to fundraiser organizers Connie Garrigan and Barb Palumbo for making this event possible, and to Emporium Food Mart for generously providing all the ingredients. 

The library is also seeking volunteers to help make and pack sandwiches on the morning of pickup. Anyone interested in helping out can contact the library directly. 

All proceeds from this tasty fundraiser will help support the library’s growing lineup of community programs and events.

Fireflies at 40 Maples 
Whether you call them fireflies or lighting bugs these glowing beetles are a staple of summers in Pennsylvania. Join a park educator and learn about their lives before going for a stroll to enjoy nature’s fireworks at dusk.

CCHS graduate, Kelsie Kearney was a guest of Rotarian Kathy Strycula today.
 Kathy is the chair of our Scholarship Committee and is shown presenting Kelsie with her one-time technical scholarship! Kelsey plans to attend the Vet Tech Institute in Pittsburgh. 
 Other scholarship recipients who were unable to attend the meeting are CCHS students/graduates: one-time academic - Jakob Narby and 4-year academic - Maggie Abriatis!

PennDOT Winter Maintenance Program

While we are still feeling the summer heat, PennDOT is preparing for cooler temperatures by gearing up for its winter maintenance program. 
 Positions available may include CDL equipment operators, mechanics, dispatchers, tradesman helpers and semi-skilled laborers. The positions pay between $17.38 per hour to $28.37 per hour.

The Emmanuel Episcopal Church service for July 6th

 

The Emmanuel Episcopal Church service for July 6th is Holy Eucharist with Father Matt Ryan.
 The service begins at 11:00 A. M. Sue Wendel will be the reader and coffee hour will be hosted by Emmanuel in the Miller Hall following the service.
