John Gary Pasquinelli, Sr

 

John's funeral will be Saturday, May 8th at 9 am at Saint Boniface Church in Kersey, PA.

Below is his obituary which had been posted in December 2020.

John Gary Pasquinelli, Sr., most recently from Cary, NC, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, December 15, 2020, at the age 73. John was born on May 10, 1947, to the late Etole and Mildred (Croom) Pasquinelli in Norfolk, Virginia. He spent his entire childhood in Kersey on Coal Hollow Road and graduated from St. Marys Area High School in 1965.

John was the proud father of four children, Paula (John) Garczynski of Erie; Melissa Pasquinelli (Sean Mitton) of Cary, NC; Amanda (Mike) Sockett of Mentor, OH; and John (Amelia) Pasquinelli, Jr. of Holly Springs, NC; as well as a loving grandfather to Evan and Owen Sockett and Tyler Mitton Pasquinelli, all of whom survive. Besides his children, John is also survived by a sister, Patricia Pasquinelli of Kersey; a brother, Brent Pasquinelli of State College; and several uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his former wife, Sue (Wickett) Pasquinelli, with whom he shared his four children.

John was a veteran of the Vietnam conflict, serving for two years with the Army at Fort Bliss, TX. After his time in the military, he moved to St. Marys where he worked for 20 years at Carbon City Products as a tool and die maker and manufacturing engineer. He, along with his former wife Sue, started the first grinding company in Elk County, J.& S. Grinding Inc. located in Ridgway, in 1987, which he owned and operated for many years before retiring. He volunteered in the community as a little league coach, and was Past Chairman of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and also a Past Grand Knight and a 4th degree knight of Council 567 of the Knights of Columbus. He was a 50 year life member of Post 103 American Legion in St. Marys, and also belonged to the CMF, Moose, PFL, and the VFW of Emporium. John will be lovingly remembered by his children and those who knew him as someone with an incredible sense of humor who could tell the best stories, and who enjoyed spending time with others and laughing at a good joke. He seemed to know someone wherever he went, or would make new connections -- even his new NC community was already fond of his enthusiastic friendliness. He had a deep love of his country and was proud to have served it. He was passionate about American history, hunting, fishing, golfing, and rooting for his sports teams as a lifelong Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins fan.

A Memorial Mass will be held at the St. Boniface Church in Kersey at a later date and time to be announced. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Fisher House Foundation, 12300 Twinbrook Parkway, Suite 410, Rockville, MD 20852. The Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Enzo E. Magaro

 

Enzo E. Magaro, 13, of Rich Valley Road, Emporium, died Tuesday, March 2, 2021, at his home. Born July 1, 2007 in Coudersport, he was the son of Ryan and Brandi Graham Magaro. Enzo was a lifelong resident of Emporium and an eighth grade student of Cameron County High School. He was a member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Emporium and its Youth Group.

He played Cameron County Junior High Football and Basketball, Cameron County Little League Baseball, and was an active member of the Cameron County Outdoor Youth Activities (CCOYA) organization. Enzo was an avid reader. He had a lifelong passion for fishing in streams, at the Gerg's pond, Lake Clear Creek and anywhere he could cast a line. Enzo was also deeply devoted to his beloved dog “Coffee”.

In addition to his parents, Enzo is survived by: two sisters, Milla and Aria Magaro both at home; his grandparents, Greg & Deb Magaro “PopPop & MiMi” of Emporium, Wendy Magaro “Mammers” of Boston, VA, and Scott & Nancy Graham "Bam & Pap” of Emporium; his great grandmother, Nancy Brown “NaNa” of Emporium; "adoptive” grandparents, Ken & Joann Gerg “Mr. & Mrs. Gerg” of Emporium; four aunts, Adrienne “Titi” (Chris) Rouette of Boston, VA, Laura “Lulu” (Tom) Isaac of Yorktown, VA, and Kendra Graham and McKenzie Magaro both of Emporium; three uncles, special uncle Chris Brown, also Caleb (Nicole) Graham and Britt Graham all of Emporium; cousins, Ethan Isaac, Jaxon Rouette, Soryn & Remi Graham, and Asher & Kai Graham, all of whom he loved dearly.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, March 6, 2021 at the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Emporium. The family will receive friends from 1-2:30 p.m. at which time a message of hope from Pastor Lionel will follow. Interment will be in Newton Cemetery, Emporium.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library, 27 W Fourth St., CCOYA, 174 Nickler Rd., or the Cameron County SPCA, 678 S Mountain Rd., all in Emporium.

 Arrangements are under the direction of the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium.

We will begin accepting the community at 1pm until 2:30pm. 

People are welcome to stop and go at any time, or stay for a message of hope from

 Please bear with us as we will do our best to stay strong throughout.

 Each step in this process has been infinitely hard and adds finality.

 Enzo will be cremated and interned at Newton Cemetery in the near future.

 We want to spread some of his ashes at his favorite places. The Gerg's Pond, Lake Clear Creek, The Rich Valley Bridge, and eventually Alaska. We were just a few months away from making a fishing trip there. Hold your children close. Spoil them. Take the extra time. Let love prevail. We love our community and the outpouring of support. We are only now learning of some of the many ways you have all come together in this dark time. But there is hope. God is good, always.

 Dear friends, we want to make sure that everyone is aware that we will be hosting the service for Enzo Magaro at the church; it is open to the community. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 2:30 PM. A service will begin at 2:30 PM. We would love to see you here. There is seating available and overflow space already prepared. In case we run out of space for the service, there is radio signal available for you to listen from your vehicle in the parking lot. Service will not be live streamed due to unreliable internet service. We would appreciate if you help us by sharing this news with the community.

Cameron County Community Chest March Update GKN

GKN & GKN EMPLOYEES DONATE TO THE CAMERON COUNTY COMMUNITY CHEST 2021 FUND DRIVE

Over the past 45 years GKN Sinter Metals Emporium (originally PPM) has been supporting the Cameron County Community Chest via employee contributions through payroll deduction, fundraising events throughout the year and company donation. Since the inception of this program, GKN has been a major contributor to the Cameron County Community Chest in helping it to meet the fund drive goals. Over the years since the program started, GKN has raised between 25% and 67% of the funds needed to hit the goals of the Community Chest.

This year the donations from GKN and its employees total $7,451. This represents 39% of the $19,000 goal. The CCCC commends GKN and their employees for their continued support of the Cameron County Community Chest.

With the donation from GKN, we have collected $17,475 toward our $19,000 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed to the 2021 Fund Drive.

Vaccinating PA Teachers

 

In order to help get more Pennsylvania students back in the classroom, the COVID-19 Vaccine Task Force announced a new plan this week to provide vaccines to teachers and claimed they could do it without impacting the ability of seniors and other vulnerable populations to get vaccinated. This announcement came in conjunction with news of what the Department claims to be an improved distribution formula that accounts for a county’s overall population, population over 65, infection rate, and COVID death rate. The Departments stated intent is to dramatically improve the vaccination rate of Pennsylvanians in Phase 1A, including seniors.

The new vaccination plan would not change who is eligible to receive the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines in Phase 1A, including older Pennsylvanians and state residents who are more vulnerable to the virus due to various health conditions. However, teachers would now be eligible to receive the newly authorized, single-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine under a separate program, which is expected to help teachers and students return to the classroom as soon as possible.

My personal opinion is that we still must prioritize those who are the most vulnerable, even for the Johnson & Johnson vaccine and have made that known to the Department during virtual meetings.

In order to deliver the vaccine quickly, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency and the departments of Education and Health will partner with the state’s 28 Intermediate Units (IUs) to establish vaccine sites, with the support of the Pennsylvania National Guard. Lawmakers passed legislation authorizing the National Guard to deliver vaccines in February.

Recruiting Waterways Conservation Officer Trainees

Pennsylvanians who are interested in a career as a Wildlife Conservation Officer can apply now through March 14 to be a part of the next training program, which begins this summer.

Elk and Deer Alert

Elk and Deer Alert  

In the past few years there has been an increase in the number of elk seen near Rt 120 East (or West) coming into Emporium. The elk are on the Rails to Trails, near the highway and have traveled within a mile of town. Recently two bull elk were hit by vehicles East of Truman, one right across from the Little Red Barn Farm, and one a few hundred yards East. There are multiple Facebook postings of elk sightings near the highway. There are multiple deer sightings too. The elk and deer have been feeding closer to the roads but hopefully they will start migrating back up into the hills now that the weather is changing.

 Yesterday evening a bull elk was hit in the village of Sterling Run. Fortunately there were no serious injuries. With his permission, I am sharing Mark Johnson's photo of last evenings accident. The elk usually don't survive ( this one did not) and the vehicles suffer serious damage.

 Please be careful out there!

 Parent(s)/Guardian(s) may access paperwork on the Cameron County School Districts website at www.camcosd.org, select the Woodland Elementary tab, and select Kindergarten Registration from the drop down. A checklist has also been provided to ensure all necessary paperwork has been submitted.

 Children must be five (5) years of age on or before July 1, 2021 to be eligible to enter kindergarten. To complete the registration process, parent(s) need to bring their child’s birth certificate, their child’s immunization records, vision testing results, parent driver’s license or proof of residency, and any custody documents (if applicable.) Social Security card is no longer needed.

Causer to Host Property Tax/Rent Rebate Clinic in Emporium

HARRISBURG – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) announced plans to host a Property Tax/Rent Rebate Clinic to aid eligible Cameron County-area residents in filing for the rebates.

The clinic will be held on Tuesday, March 16, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Emporium Senior Center, 105 E. Fourth St. 

Appointments are required and may be made by calling Kelly Spencer at 814-486-3707.

Participants must follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines, including social distancing and wearing a mask. To avoid crowds of people waiting, participants are asked to arrive only five minutes before their scheduled appointment. Bring all necessary income, property tax or rental information required to process claims quickly and accurately.

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 years or older, widows and widowers 50 years or older, and those 18 years or older with disabilities. Eligibility income limits are set at $15,000 for renters and $35,000 for homeowners, excluding 50% of Social Security, Supplemental Security Income and Railroad Retirement Tier 1 benefits. Also, applicants with veterans disability benefits and/or pensions do not need to declare that income.

Assistance with filing for rebates is also available at Causer’s offices in Bradford, Coudersport and Kane.

Robert G. "Red" Gustafson

Robert G. "Red" Gustafson, 90, of Centre Crest, Bellefonte, PA formerly of Emporium passed away at Centre Crest on Monday evening (March 1, 2021). He was born March 18, 1930 in Penfield, PA a son of the late Eric and Charlotte McCool Gustafson. On May 21, 1955 in St. Mark Catholic Church he married the late Adelaide Bosnik Gustafson.

Red graduated from Emporium High School in the class of 1948. He served with the US Marines during the Korean Conflict. He worked many years at Sylvania and later for Caldwell Corporation where he retired as plant manager. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church. He enjoyed making doll houses and donating them to many people throughout the area.

He is survived by two sons, Robert E. Gustafson, Louisville, KY and Michael J. Gustafson and his wife Darcy, State College, PA; four grandchildren: Matthew, Taylor, Helen & William, two great grandchildren: Sutton & Corbett; and a sister, Helen Petruzzi, Emporium.

In addition to his parents and wife he was preceded in death by three brothers, Eric, Jr., William and Dalton Gustafson; four sisters, Thelma Cox, Ranetha Kines, Buelah Metz & Verna Kondek.

There will be No Visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at the St. Mark Catholic Church in Emporium, PA at the convenience of the family with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant. Burial will be in the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery, Emporium, PA where a Military Service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail.

Kelly Bennett Spencer  and Cherie Miller  will be available tomorrow (Wednesday, March 3rd) in the Youth Room at the CMA Church from 3-5pm to pray with any teens who would like to come, as we all process a very heartbreaking loss in our community.

There has been a misprint on the tax bills concerning my office hours. 

 Please see hours below:

March 1st-5th noon till 5pm 

March 8th - April 30th Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 4pm-7pm 

If you arrive outside these hours, please use the doorbell. If i am home, I will gladly assist you. If I am not home, please use the locked Drop Box or call 486-1305 to make an appointment that fits your schedule. 

 If you are using the Drop Box and would like a stamped receipt, please include your entire bill along with a self addressed, stamped envelope and i will mail it to you.

Dr. Seuss Quilt Raffle

In honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March, 2, we will be holding a raffle drawing throughout the month of March for this beautiful, one-of-a-kind, Cat in the Hat Quilt. 

 The quilt was made with a lot of love by Library Board member, Nancy Zoschg, and would make a wonderful addition to any child’s room. 

Tickets for the quilt will be $5 each or 5 for $20, and can be purchased at the library from March 2, through March 31.

Missing Cat

 A small female cat ( 8lbs) went missing on Carson street on Feb 26th. 

She has a small white marking on her chest other then that she is all black. She was wearing a purple/white flea collar when she got out. She was recently to the vet but got out before she was able to get her meds. She is very missed!!

Caution at West End Traffic Light

Use caution when approaching the intersection of Woodland Avenue and 

4th street.  The traffic light is not working correctly. 

The light facing Woodland Avenue is a red light and the light on Main Street has been flashing yellow.

I've always liked this barn. Fond memories of going there when I was young and riding the ponies that Mr. Brown had at his home on the end of the Old West Creek road.

Rotary News

 

Ben Porkolab, Conservation Education Coordinator, at the Elk Viewing Center, Benezette, PA, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon meeting February 23rd. 

 Ben grew up in Kane, earned a scholarship to attend the Safari Club International’s Wildlife Leadership School in Jackson Hole Wyoming while in high school. After high school, Ben attended IUP and obtained his Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education, teaching elementary school for two years in the bush country of Alaska and then one year in Nevada. Ben retired after teaching 19 years at the Cameron County School District after an opportunity to teach what he loved most, wildlife, came up at the Elk Viewing Center. Ben’s teaching skills have continued for the past two plus years at the center where he interacts with many children teaching various wildlife programs.

The program focused on the Elk Hunt which has been going on for the past 20 years. Ben was lucky enough after 7 years, to draw a tag to hunt a bull elk. There are 14 zones in PA, Ben killed his in Zone 1 on Hickory Road. Some facts he gave the group included elk eating about 25 lbs. a day. They are grazers, but in during the winter months eat tons of bark off the trees and can become very destructive. PA is home to approximately a 1,500 elk herd and they are found in 10 counties. Cows can range from 10-12 square miles and bulls up to 25.
