Spooky Wrap Up

Spooky Wrap Up
Cameron County welcomed Halloween Saturday. Ghosts, goblins, witches and princess visited businesses, trunk or treat, played corn hole, enjoyed food from vendors, entered the Cameron County Recreation Center Haunted House and went door to door. The rain held off for the activities which packed downtown Emporium from 3 to 8.

Emporium Food Market and Sheetz provided prizes for children 5-18. Deborah Knarr, Joni Holterback, Ava Olay, Ella Smith, Lauryn Trumpie, Mitchell Parslow, Lilly Thomas, Brice Major, Autumn Hunt, Tabitha Connolly, Sophie Cummings, and Amber Earle were selected by the judges. This was the first time in decades that a “parade” was held in the community. Cameron County Chamber of Commerce executive director, Tina Solak noted “it was a first start. The committee met following the event and is tweaking plans for next year including expanding the ages and adding group categories.”

.Halloween activities continued through the start of the week with the Dare to Enter the Cameron County Recreation Center Haunted House which had hours Sunday through Tuesday. Sizerville State Park celebrated Halloween activities on October 31 with Spooktacular Skele-bration games and crafts. Costumes are encouraged, so stop by for a ghostly good time and learn about skulls, bats and spiders. Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library hosting Spooky Story Hour Tuesday night.

CCOYA Youth Deer Hunt

Cameron County Outdoor Youth Activities (CCOYA) held their annual Youth deer hunt during the three day 2023 Special firearms doe season.

Participating in the hunt were licensed junior hunters Elijah Holterback, Brice Major, Cruz Smoker, Kaleb Jackson, Torsten Langley, and Korbin Post.

The Junior hunters were paired up with adult mentors to be with them throughout the hunt to assure safety and a positive experience.
The junior hunt season took place October 19, 20, and 21st.

Earlier in the week the group visited the Andrews Farm to discuss safety, the number one priority. They also took the opportunity to sight in the rifles and hear more details of what to expect during the next few evenings. During the hunt the hunters spent the evening in blinds watching over managed food plots on the Russell Hollow Hunt Club property in Salt Run.

During this years hunt there were 3 doe harvested.
Successful hunters were Brice Major, Kaleb Jackson and Torsten Langley. At the end of the hunts everyone re-grouped at the Andrews Farm to enjoy a hot meal and discuss their evening hunt. There, Brian Gillette demonstrated to the hunters the process of dressing a deer and properly prepare them for butchering.

One of the stipulations of the hunt is that the first doe harvested by each youth hunter would be donated to Hunters Sharing the Harvest. This is part of CCOYA’s ongoing efforts to encourage our youth the importance of giving back. All of hunters were completely on board with this opportunity.” This was a very successful program and one that everyone will remember the rest of their lives. The deer will be delivered to Buddy Wolfe of Valley Meats a participating butcher for HSH. Buddy will process the meat and grind into hamburger and package. The meat will then be donated to Northern Tier Community Action and distributed throughout Cameron County by their Cameron County Community Food Pantry program. CCOYA would like to thank all the hunters, families, mentors and everyone behind the scenes to make this a successful program. CCOYA would also like to thank the Cameron County Vets Club for preparing dinner for the first 2 nights of the hunt.

Upper Allegheny Medical Center Update

Upper Allegheny Medical Center
There have been many queries about my upcoming retirement; from patients, local hospitals, and nursing homes. I have no plans to retire in the near, or distant future. I am in good health and continue to enjoy this calling. We are presently staffed with not only myself, but likeminded, holistic midlevels Mary Schimp PA and Heather Kio CRNP.
Please allow these rumors to be put to rest as we remain committed to serving the common good.
Thank you, Dr. Mark Shelley, Upper Allegheny Medical Center, Port Allegany Area Family Practice, P.C.

Thanksgiving Dinner Donations Accepted @ Emporium Senior Center

I am looking for donations for items to have a Thanksgiving Dinner for our seniors.
If you get a turkey, you don't want or need, please feel free to drop off. The last day to drop items off is the 16th. That way I can get any items needed. This is not a public event; I am only hosting for our consumers as some have no family. Thank you in advance!

Sinnemahone Trail Run Results

Sinnemahone Trail Run Results

New record set in the Sinnemahone 50k on Saturday. Bobby Longenecker from Lititz finished the race in 4:50:43. He was one of two competitors taking home the gold crown of the Sinnemahone Triple Crown. Longenecker finished third in the 55 mile gravel bike race and finished third in the Bob Umbenhauer race of the Sinnemahone Paddle. Hansel Lucas from Brookville also completed the longest distance in each of the legs of the Sinnemahone Triple Crown.

Saturday 80 competitors braved cool and rainy weather to complete the course through the Elk State Forest. Earning the silver triple crown were Ken Bray, Ryan Dobson, Brice Major, Dave McManigle, Saul Solveson, Steve Stoddard, Juneann Travis, Harry Beiler, Maribeth Beiler, and Valerie Van Breugel. Siver crown participants selected shorter distances in at least one of the three events.

The top finisher in the 25k was Raymond Esh from Lykens at 2:14:49. The top female finisher was Cleo Bradybaugh from Kane finishing at 2:54:52. In the 12k race Terry McGaffic from Hookstown finished first with a time of 1:04:15, while Ann Sick from Millville finished in 1:15:49.

The race grew by 20% this year and has reached pre-covid levels. “It was exhilarating seeing past participants return including those that either lived here and moved or own a season residence in Cameron County,” said Cameron County Chamber of Commerce executive director, Tina Solak. Those participants included a husband and wife team from Texas, Beth and Doug Argot who own a seasonal residence. Returning from California was a mother son duo Nancy and Eric Vierhaus. This is the 11th year for the race which is used to promote local businesses who provide the awards and swag for the events.

Ruth M. Farren Lucanik

Ruth M. Farren Lucanik, 57, formerly of Eddies Run Road, Emporium, passed away at DuBois Nursing Home on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 following a lengthy illness. She was born February 13, 1966 in Emporium, a daughter of the late Thomas and Vicki Lundin Farren.

Ruth was a lifelong resident of Emporium and was employed for many years by American Sintered Technologies in Emporium. Her greatest pleasures in life were her family and friends. She had the biggest heart and accepted everyone she became friends with as family. Ruth enjoyed family functions where she was always pushed around on some form of riding toy just for laughs. She especially enjoyed the downhill rides. Her pride and joy was her grandson Jaden who she raised as her own.

Survivors include: a son, Scott Lucanik of Emporium; a daughter, Karen Foley of Erie; her special grandson Jaden Lucanik of Emporium; a grandson, Jordan Foley and a granddaughter Nevaeh Foley, both of Emporium; two brothers, Thomas (Debb) Farren and Peter Farren, both of Emporium; two sisters, Deb Smith of Brockway and Jane Farren of Emporium; and eight nieces and nephews who gave her the joy of many great nieces and nephews.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents, a brother-in- law, David Akins, Sr., and a nephew, Clifford Akins.

Information regarding a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home in Emporium.
