Withdrawal Symptoms from Alcohol

Withdrawal Symptoms from Alcohol

In response to COVID -19, Governor Wolf and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board have called for the closing of Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores. This could impact heavy drinkers in our area. Heavy drinking is considered to be 5 or more drinks on the same occasion on for 5 days or more in a 30 day period.

This could cause many people to experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms (AWS) is a potentially deadly condition that can occur just a few hours after someone’s last alcoholic drink. Some signs to pay attention to regarding AWS: nausea vomiting fatigue insomnia shaking hands headaches sweating anxiety, irritability, depression More severe forms of AWS include the following: seizures tremors fever heart attack or stroke extreme anxiety increased heart rate and pulse rate irregular heartbeat disorientation confusion. Because of the physical effects of AWS the safest approach is to seek medical attention. A person can present themselves to any hospital ER and tell them they are experiencing severe Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms. Severe AWS may require an inpatient stay while hospital staff monitor levels of body chemicals, give IV fluids, monitor blood pressure, temperature and heart rate, and check for possible hallucinations and other signs of distress.

If you or a loved one are suffering some of these alcohol withdrawal symptoms please do not delay in getting treatment. For more information you may contact Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services.
