Dorothy C. Dixon

Dorothy C. Dixon, born April 9, 1936, passed away at her residence in Freedom Village, West Brandywine, Pa., on Thursday, April 18, 2019 at the age of 83.

She was born in Philadelphia, the daughter of the late Henry J. and Dorothy Witmer Dixon. At the age of 9 her parents moved to Emporium. She attended school in Emporium and was a 1954 graduate of Emporium High School where she was a cheerleader. She received her nursing diploma from the University of Pennsylvania in 1957 and later received her Bachelor’s degree in nursing, specializing in the psychiatric field, from New York University.

Beside her parents she was predeceased by her lifelong loving companion of 56 years, Kathleen C. O’Grady, who was a fellow psychiatric nurse and passed away in 2017. They spent their working career lives in the New York City area. Following their retirement they spent many years living in a seaside cottage in Oakdale, Long Island. In 1985 they moved to Philadelphia where they spent many years caring for Dorothy’s elderly parents until their passing.

During their retirement years, she and Kathy spent most of their free time collecting antiques and rare books and furnishing and decorating their residences, in addition to caring for their many beloved feline & canine pets.

Dorothy is survived by: her brother Henry P. Dixon and his wife Leah of Centre Hall; her niece Kara Dixon and nephew Daniel Dixon, both of State College; and her dear friend and faithful care giver, Janet Vart of Freedom Village, who spent the last year living with & caring for Dorothy as her health declined, for which Dorothy’s family will be forever grateful.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Burial will be in Newton Cemetery in Emporium.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium. Condolences, thoughts and memories may be sent to CCFHEmporium@gmail.com
