Dissection Mini-Camp Signups
The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library is excited to bring back our popular Dissection
Mini-Camp, with Pitt-Bradford Professor, Orin James on August 12, & Thursday, August 14,
2025 , both from 1-2:30 PM.
This program, open to youth ages 12-18, is a very special REAL
DISSECTION program where you will get the chance to dissect a brain and an eyeball.
You MUST register for each program session separately!
The Library will cover the cost of this
special program for anyone who wants to attend.

2nd interview in our Adventure Biking Series! 🚴
Next up in our Adventure Biking Series is Cliff Clark.
Cliff is an avid cyclist in Cameron County. He has been biking since 1989.
For his graduation gift, he asked for a mountain bike so he could begin discovering the vast and endless routes in Cameron County. He would take off with his bike and a map and enjoy seeing the scenery around the area.
Cliff was involved in road racing for many years but now rides only recreationally.
Cliff has ridden over 115,000 miles in his 36 years in his cycling journey for an average of about 3,000 miles per year.
He enjoys morning rides before work which range from 10-20 miles and longer days of 30-60 miles on weekends or days off. He enjoys the mountains and nature all around Cameron County, as well as all the routes we have to offer.
Some great places he likes to ride are the Hicks and Dents Run area and Ridge Road.
His advice for someone who is interested in biking is to get started with a gravel or
mountain bike and ride on gravel or secondary paved roads.
Also, having the right equipment and correct bike fit is extremely important.
It is also helpful to find someone who has biking experience to go out and ride with you.
Keep an eye out for Cliff on the trails here in Emporium and greet him with a wave!

Trailblazer Brings Gravel Biking Adventure to Cameron County
David Landis is an adventure seeker who has come to Cameron County to develop gravel and bikepacking routes. David has been working with trails for 20 years. This includes hiking and biking trails. With two decades of trail work under his belt—spanning both hiking and biking—Landis brings a global perspective to the region. A native of Virginia, he’s designed 500-mile bikepacking routes in his home state and spent 10 years building long-distance hiking trails across the Middle East, weaving pathways through landscapes rich in history, nature, and solitude.
Now, he’s turning his passion toward the rugged backroads and forest-lined trails of north-central Pennsylvania. His latest project, Wild Elk Gravel, is a growing gravel biking initiative that showcases the county’s terrain through curated routes, social media updates, and images of cyclists immersed in the region’s remote beauty. Gravel biking is becoming more popular around the world, and especially growing in Cameron County.
What he enjoys most about Cameron County and gravel cycling routes here, is that we are right in the heart of PA. The trails are surrounded by vast forests. The rides help you to reconnect with nature and to escape the busy, everyday life. When talking about the woods around us, he stated, “You get lost in them, in a good, timeless way.” People connect with one another in the community, and these trails connect people to gravel biking and adventure. Whether it be a trail that takes days to complete, or if it is a day trip.
He stated that the gravel and dirt roads are already here. It is not something that needs to be built, and that these routes are a compelling tourism attraction for the county. It was great to talk to David about his passion for the trails here in Cameron County and how he has implemented these trails in our area for tourism and adventure. As more outdoor adventurers discover Cameron County’s hidden paths, thanks in part to Landis’s efforts, the region is emerging as a destination for those seeking the intersection of wilderness, wellness, and adventure.

Austin Woman’s Spinal Surgery Helped Her Get Back in the Saddle
For Kathy Torrey of Austin, Pa., horseback riding has been a lifelong passion. At 74, she
still rides for hours through the scenic trails of north central Pennsylvania with friends.
But in early 2024, a troubling numbness in her legs began to interfere with her ability to
walk—let alone ride.
“It was constant,” Kathy says. “There was no relief, no matter what I did.”
Encouraged by friends, Kathy visited her primary care provider and was referred
to Weizhen Wang, M.D., a neurologist at UPMC Neurological Institute in Williamsport.
Dr. Wang ordered an MRI, which revealed a tumor compressing Kathy’s thoracic spine.
“Dr. Wang was extremely kind,” Kathy says. “She explained everything and got the ball
rolling.”
To reduce travel before surgery, Kathy underwent a full-body MRI closer to home
at UPMC Cole in Coudersport. The experience was unexpectedly comforting—she
listened to music during the scan, and the final song reminded her of her late mother. “It
was like a sign,” she says. “I knew everything was going to be OK.”
Kathy was quickly referred to the neurosurgery team at UPMC, where Holly Shadle,
C.R.N.P., helped fast-track her for surgery. On July 29, 2024, Fadi Sweiss, M.D.,
neurosurgeon, performed a laminectomy at UPMC Williamsport to remove the tumor
and relieve pressure on her spinal cord.
“Dr. Sweiss was so kind and gentle,” Kathy says. “It was evident he knew what he was
doing.”
After four days in the hospital and a careful recovery at home with help from family and
friends, Kathy was back on her feet—and back in the saddle by fall.
“I have absolutely no tingling in my legs,” she says. “It was just amazing.”
Today, Kathy rides several times a week and continues to care for her three horses. In
May 2025, she joined friends for a multi-day trip to Benezette, riding four hours a day,
over multiple days.
“I was sore, but after a hot shower, I felt great,” she says. “It’s just a matter of getting the
muscles and my stamina back.”
Grateful for her care team and the support of her friends, Kathy says, “It was meant to
be.
I was exactly where I needed to be.”

Weed Removal in Downtown Business District

🌱Members of the Sylvan Heritage Council are going to slowly start removing weeds from our downtown business district.
If you are a building or business owner (or want to help just because) and you’re willing to to take care of your frontage to lighten our load, we’d so appreciate your help!
We’ve also found an effective vinegar-based weed killer to use, but most of the weeds have to be removed first.
🌱It’s going to take all of us to keep our downtown looking sharp - and pride in our town matters so much! Thank you for spreading the word!
