Stephen W. Galford

Stephen W. Galford, 67, of 551 Sizerville Rd., Emporium, PA died at Penn Highlands Elk, St. Marys, PA on Wednesday evening, November 9, 2016. He was born June 13, 1949 in Marlinton, West Virginia a son of Mattie Gay Galford Holsinger, St. Marys, PA and the late Dennie Galford. On January 11, 1979 in Emporium he married Rosemary Young, who survives.

Mr. Galford worked with his father in the logging business years ago. He then worked for Shippen Township for many years including three terms as the townships supervisor. He owned and operated the former Steve Galford Contracting Company and currently worked for Duffy, Inc., in Smethport. He was a member of the Emporium Lodge #382, F.and A.M., and the First Baptist Church in Emporium. He had a love of the outdoors and always carried a camera on his outdoor adventures photographing various animals.

Surviving in addition to his mother, is his wife Rosemary Young Galford, and a brother, 

Frank R. Galford, Emporium.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dennie Galford and a step father, Robert Holsinger and a brother, Douglas Galford. 

A Memorial Service will be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday (November 12, 2016) at 6:00 PM with Rev. Joseph Short, Pastor, First United Methodist Church, officiating. 

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home on Saturday from 4:00 - 6:00 PM where his masonic lodge will hold a Masonic Funeral Ritual at 4:30 PM. 

Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, PA

 Emporium Rotary held a dinner November 5th honoring Rotarians, Patricia Martin & Barry Brown with a Paul Harris Fellow Award, one of Rotary's most prestigious awards, for their many contributions to Rotary. Also honored was Mayor Bruno Carnovale (center), a non-Rotarian, for his 47 years of unselfish commitment to public service which has impacted and benefited the Emporium Borough. The club donates $1,000.00 to the Rotary Foundation in the recipient's name and the benefactors receive a certificate and pin to honor them for their extraordinary service.

Holiday Open House

The Holiday Open House presents an opportunity for the community to view the Park Office and Wildlife Center all decked out in its winter splendor. Visitors can enjoy the eye-catching holiday displays created by local volunteers, Grandpa Hank’s winter village donated by Debbie Calkins of Mansfield, and of course, the state-of-the art wildlife exhibits.

Cameron County Community Chest 2017 Fund Drive – Nov. Update

We are five weeks into the 2017 fund drive. Over 200 letters have gone out to local individuals, businesses and organizations. We have had a great start. Through Oct. 31st we have collected $3,431 toward our $20,500 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed. 

 This drive will run through September 30, 2017.

Watch for our monthly updates. Each month we will feature a write up on one of the organizations that the Cameron County Community Chest contributes to. This month’s feature will be the Cameron County Recreation Board.

Cameron County Recreation Center provides many different services to the local community. The main focus is to provide a safe but fun environment for area youth to enjoy. The game room is open Tuesdays through Saturday and offers a variety of table games and electronic gaming. The membership also includes use of the outdoor basketball court. They have two rooms available for rent for meetings and parties. The large room is the most popular for parties and can be rented for a minimal fee. There is no charge for business rentals. Tables and chairs can be rented (when available) as well as outdoor party games. Various exercise classes are also available each week. The Recreation Center will continue to collaborate with the 4-H program to provide out of school programs for youth ages 8-18 as well as summer 4-H programs. This summer, two local playgrounds were supervised, South Park and Third Street. The participants enjoyed wildlife presentations from Cameron County Conservation, Beekeeping from Ryan Magaro, a painting class by Peggy Heckman and several walking trips to local offices including the courthouse and the chamber. Cameron County Recreation is also responsible for organizing and scheduling games for the girls and boys elementary basketball program. Cameron County Recreation Center is funded partly by the County, Emporium Foundation and Community Chest. The 4-H and summer programs are funded entirely by grants from the Emporium Foundation. Rotary News November 1, 2016

Todd Parisi, (left) Leadership & Motivational Speaker, was the guest speaker at the Rotary luncheon November 1st. Todd is a native of Kersey, PA, but now lives in the mountains over Emporium and is the proud father of 3 and grandfather of one.

 He joined the US Marine Corps at the age of 17 and in 1986 entered recruit training in South Carolina. From that date until his retirement in September of 2014, Sergeant Major Parisi served in multiple combat tours in multiple wars. After his retirement in 2014, Todd served as a Freshman high school teacher where he was nominated as Teacher of the Year. He holds a Bachelor Degree in Organizational Management and is the author of the book "From Where I Stand". Todd then decided to move back to the area and is currently active in community fundraising. Sergeant Major Parisi has reached over 9,000 students with his inspirational messages. He has also spoken to organizations such as Global Fortune 500 companies, GEICO, Veterans Groups, Active Military, youth groups, law enforcement and fire groups. He has also been active in many fundraising actives in the area. His message was that we only pass through this life once and how it is everyone should be an inspiration to others, give back to their community by being part of the solution not the problem, and that no one can do things alone that we all are stronger together.

Jean Geelen Sizer

Jean Geelen Sizer, age 66, of West Fourth Street, Emporium, died Saturday, October 29, 2016, in Emporium. Born August 24, 1950 in St. Marys, she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Betty Spellenberg Geelen and was formerly married to David L. Sizer.

A lifelong resident of Cameron County she was a 1968 graduate of Cameron County High School. Jean was a loving mother, grandmother and homemaker.

Survivors include: one son, Daniel P. Sizer of Russell, PA; one daughter, Sarah B. Sizer of Emporium; one grandson, Bradley Lukaschunis of Emporium; one sister, Patricia Kelly and husband Kim of Cupertino, CA; one nephew, Steven Kelly also in Cupertino; one niece, Suzanne Kelly of Fredericksburg, VA; and one aunt, Annabell Bloomquist of Clinton, NY.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 3, 2016 from 4-7 p.m. in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, where Funeral and Committal Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Joseph Short, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Emporium, officiating.

Burial will be in Moore Hill Cemetery, Emporium. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Moore Hill Cemetery Association.

Mary Ann Mummert

Mary Ann Mummert, 54, of 1095 Highland Dr., Mechanicsburg, PA passed away at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill, PA on Sunday (October 30, 2016) night following a lengthy battle with a brain tumor. She was born January 30, 1962 in St. Marys, PA a daughter of the late Beverly J. Smith.

 On November 20, 1982 in State College, PA she married the love of her life Mark C. Mummert, who survives Mary Ann graduated from Penn State University where she received Bachelor degrees in Elementary Education and also in Math Science. Mary Ann worked as a systems analyst for Capital Blue Cross in Harrisburg. She loved her cats and belonged to several animal rescue associations.

She is survived by her loving husband Mark C. Mummert.

 She was preceded in death by her mother, Beverly J. Smith, There will be No Visitation.

The Cameron County Storm Board Members are excited to announce that Sunday, November 13th, 2016, will be nominations and elections of all board positions for the 2017 season! The meeting will be held in the upstairs of the KofC at 7:00 PM. While all board positions are able for nomination and election, we have three positions that are completely open and in need to fill. The open positions along with a general description are as follows:

FUNDRAISING COORDINATOR - Responsible for coordination of various fundraising events, activities, and promotions.

SECRETARY - Responsible for accurate, concise, and chronological record of board proceedings.

CONCESSIONS DIRECTOR - Responsible for coordination and delegation of tasks relating to the function of the concession stand during all Storm home games.

*All elected board members are expected to attend each monthly board meeting as well as facilitate, promote, and positively participate with all things Storm Football.

Robert K. Dunsmore “beloved husband, father and grandfather”

Robert K. Dunsmore “beloved husband, father and grandfather”

Robert Kenneth “Bob” Dunsmore, 81, of Shinglehouse, PA, passed away Sunday, October 30, 2016, in his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born on August 7, 1935 in Philipsburg, he was a son of J. Donald and Elizabeth Stahl Dunsmore. On October 29, 1960 in Portville, NY, he married the former Janet Phillips, who survives.

He was a 1953 graduate of Philipsburg High School, a 1957 graduate of Lock Haven State Teachers College and in 1968 he received his Master’s Degree from Ithaca College.

Mr. Dunsmore was employed at Oswayo Valley High School in Shinglehouse from 1957 through 1962 and at Bolivar Central School from 1962 until his retirement in 1995. He taught Phys. Ed., Health, and Driver’s Education.

“Coach” Dunsmore was the head football coach at Bolivar Central School for 22 seasons where he was a two time “Big 30” Coach of the Year. He was inducted into the Allegany, NY County Sports Hall of Fame, the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame and the Section “V” Football Hall of Fame.

Shortly after his retirement, Coach Dunsmore was honored by the naming of the new Bolivar football stadium, the “Dunsmore-Latimer” Field.

Mr. Dunsmore loved spending time with his entire family. He loved attending their sporting events, vacationing together at Rehoboth Beach, and playing card games, especially Euchre.

Mr. & Mrs. Dunsmore enjoyed many years of traveling around the country competing in horseshoe tournaments. Bob also ran horseshoe leagues and tournaments in Shinglehouse and Bolivar, NY.

Mr. Dunsmore was a member of St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church in Shinglehouse. He was easily recognized traveling throughout the area with his wife in his signature blue Dodge Omni.

Surviving besides his wife of 56 years are two daughters, Deborah Dunsmore Richardson of Troy, Diana “DeeDee” (Tim) Myers of Columbus, OH; two sons, Stan (Sandy) Dunsmore of Emporium and Michael (Liz Beck) Dunsmore of Bolivar, NY; eleven grandchildren, Cari Carlson, Chad (Brittany) Carlson, Katie Carlson, Bethany (Kyle) Vogt, Breanna Dunsmore, Brooke Dunsmore, Kristen (Taylor) Scott, Shawn (Adrienne Pambianco) Gruber, Troy Robert Myers, Taylor (Collin) Morrison, and Bruce (Brystal) Wilson; two great grandchildren, Lilah and Riley Carlson; a sister, Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” (Ronald) Barnett of Philipsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, David Dunsmore; and a nephew, Richard Barnett.

Friends are invited to call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 pm and 6 to 9 pm at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, 118 South Union Street, Shinglehouse, PA and on Wednesday, November 2, 2016 from 9 to 11 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 am on Wednesday in St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church, Shinglehouse, with the Rev. Thomas E. Brown, pastor, as celebrant.

 Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Shinglehouse, at a later date. There will be a luncheon and celebration of life immediately following the Mass at the Bolivar Golf Club, Bolivar, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorials if desired, may be made in Mr. Dunsmore’s honor to St. Theresa Roman Catholic Church, P O Box 277, Shinglehouse, PA 16748.

Rotary News - Week of October 25, 2016

Rotarian, Robin Kuleck, spoke at the October 25th luncheon meeting about her experiences canal boating in England. 

 Canals are a major part of the network of inland waterways in the United Kingdom. They first saw use during the Roman occupation of the south of Great Britain and were used for irrigation, but as the demand for industrial transport increased during the Industrial Revolution, the canals were used to deliver manufactured goods and supplies. In the mid-19th century, railways began to replace the canals and there was a rise in interest to use the canals for leisure use. There are now about 2,200 miles of navigable canals and rivers throughout the United Kingdom that are used by locals and tourists.

 Also attending the meeting was Christy Solveson, guest of Rotarian, Kim Whiting.

Rotary News October 18, 2016

Rotarian, Bill Olivett, introduced guest speaker, George Sowers, Jr, PA State Human Police Officer, Borough Animal Enforcement Officer and President of the local SPCA, spoke at the 

Rotary luncheon October 18th.

Before taking on his role, George went through a strict training program. He also works closely with the state & borough police. George spoke of the dog laws in the Emporium Borough, the problems he encounters with dogs and cats and various solutions to the problems, which can result in fines. PA Dog laws and the Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement fall under the PA Department of Agriculture.

The kennel is located at South Mountain Road is a “no kill” shelter. With the help of the Emporium Foundation and volunteers from Rescue You, a volunteer organization outside the county who came up for several weeks providing materials and labor and expanded the kennel which can now house up 5 dogs and 15 cats. The local SPCA also receives funding from the Emporium Foundation and various fundraisers throughout the year. They also have a pet food bank at the Emporium Shurfine Food Mart where you can make donations to the local SPCA to help feed the animals. George stressed that people need to be responsible pet owners by spaying and neutering and making sure you have the financial means to take care of the animal.

Geocaching Family Event at Sinnemahoning State Park

 Join park staff and local GPS enthusiasts for an exciting day of geocaching at Sinnemahoning State Park on Saturday, November 12, from 12:00 noon until 2:00 PM. This fun, family event starts off with a pot-luck luncheon in the classroom of the Park Office and Wildlife Center, followed by interactive games to help participants get to know their fellow cachers.

 Individuals and families new to this high-tech scavenger hunt can get help with using a GPS, setting up a Geocaching.com account, marking waypoints and finding geocaches, including over 20 family-friendly caches already in the park. Pre-registration is requested for this free program. The first 40 registrants will receive a Sinnemahoning State Park pathtag.

Haunted Trail at Sinnemahoning State Park

It's back! The fifth annual Haunted Trail and All Hallows Eve Celebration returns to Sinnemahoning State Park on Saturday, October 29, 2016, from 4:00-9:00 PM. With new activities for younger kids and new frights for the adults and older kids, this popular Halloween event is bigger and scarier than before. At just $10.00 per carload, this trail is a spook-tacular deal! Admission fee includes haunted trail, hayride, bonfire and more.

The evening of fun begins with activities and games for younger children from 4:00-6:00 PM. Children and their families can create owls, bats, pumpkins and other make-and-take crafts. NEW this year during the family-friendly daylight trail, TRICK-or-TREAT! Kiddies are welcome to dress up in their Halloween costume and trick-or-treat with our ghosts, ghouls and witches. Woodsy Owl, Smokey Bear and Sparky the Firedog will also be there to meet and greet! This Family-Friendly Trail runs 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

At 7:00 PM, the "Full-Terror" version of the Haunted Trail opens for older children and adults. Spiders, ghosts, and the creepy chainsaw guy have all returned, plus new frights including a haunted poachers' camp, a glowing hazardous waste spill, an axe-throwing maniac, and more.

A "creepy animals" nature program and a Pumpkin Chunkin' contest will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 PM. Hayrides and a bonfire will run from 4:00-6:00 PM and from 7:00-8:30 PM.

 Refreshments, including hot beverages and baked goods, will be sold by the 7th and 9th grade students of Austin School.

The Haunted Trail and All Hallows Eve Celebration event will be held, rain or shine, at the Park Office and Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning State Park, just off Route 872 in Grove Township, on Saturday, October 29, from 4:00-9:00 PM. Trail covers about ½ mile over uneven ground. Participants should wear sturdy shoes, dress for the outdoors, and be prepared to be scared.

James Beck

James Beck, 75, of 3543 Rich Valley Rd., Emporium, PA died at his daughters residence in Hyde, PA on Friday (October 21, 2016) morning.

He was born November 25, 1940 in Penfield, PA a son of the late Russell and Belle Burkett Beck. On April 25, 1964 in DuBois he married the late Lucinda "Cindy" McDowell Beck.

Mr. Beck graduated from Houston Township High School. He then received an associate degree, as an electrician, from Williamsport Community College. Jim had worked many years at Motor Coil, Tau Electronics and several other locations as an electrician.

He is survived by four daughters, Vickie Beck, Clearfield; Valerie Beck; Emporium; Cori, Mrs. James Pratt, Clearfield; Jamie, Mrs. Ken Stuart, Emporium; and one son, Russell Beck and his wife Jen, Emporium; eight grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; two sisters, Edna Friday, Byrnedale and Fran Burnside, Penfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Russell and Belle Burkett Beck, and his wife, Lucinda "Cindy" McDowell Beck, one brother Clyde Beck.and one sister Carrie Runion

h Annual Cameron County Cooperative Extension Dinner Meeting

The 96th Annual Cameron County Cooperative Extension Dinner Meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 2, starting at 6:00 PM at the Emporium Fire Hall located on Broad Street in Emporium. Dinner will be buffet style.

This year’s guest speaker will be Bryan Swistock, Senior Extension Associate, Water Resources Coordinator at Penn State University. He will be presenting a program on “The Importance of Forestry to Water”.

The cost for the dinner is $14.00. To register, call the Cameron County Extension Office at 486-3350. Please send a check payable to "Special Extension Fund" to the Cameron County Cooperative Extension Office prior to the dinner.

Edward J. Hornung

 Edward J. Hornung, 80, of 616 Sunset Rd., St. Marys, died Saturday, Oct. 15, 2016 at Penn Highlands DuBois. He was born July 28, 1936 on Plank Road Hollow in Emporium, a son of the late Simon J. Hornung and Matilda "Tillie" Oswald Hornung. On July 3, 1965 in Holy Cross Church in Rasselas, he married Dr. Clythera Smith Hornung, who survives. He graduated from Emporium High School, Class of 1956. He had additional schooling at Williamsport Tech for plumbing and was employed by Sylvania in Emporium, Emporium Water Company, Pennsylvania Highway Department – Surveyor Assistant, Johnstown Steel Company and Airco-Speer.

Ed was involved in numerous community organizations. He was active in the early days of Little League in Emporium. He was a member of the Emporium Fire Department. He was a founder of the wrestling booster club (The Bagubas) at Cameron County High School. After he moved to St. Marys with his family in the late 1970s, he was involved in the Quarterback Club and was a founder of an early booster club for the St. Marys Area track team. Ed organized the first booster group for soccer as a varsity sport at St. Marys Area. He was also an active member of the Kiwanis Club.

More recently he was engaged in the political activities of the Elk County Republican Party. He served as party chairperson and was a member of the Republican State Committee. Ed's leadership encouraged active party participation and supported the election of sufficient Republicans that the Elk County Courthouse was considered a leadership stronghold of Republicans. In addition to Ed's concern for youth and his support of local politics, he was a talented artist. He was a woodcarver, having done numerous carvings of birds with very intricate details. He also was very competent in making stained glass pieces – those with leaded joints. He had the "eye of an artist" in selecting textures and colors that enhanced the design and made his work outstanding examples of creativity. He also was a basket weaver – using his strong hands to make useful and artistically attractive creations that are "one of a kind." He used wood in creative ways to construct attractive useful items – such as those that he made in basket shapes (from wood). He also made decorative items involving many varieties of wood in designs that were unique and very creative. He shared his expertise with several churches in the area including Sacred Heart and St. Boniface. He was responsible for the oversight of the restoration of the stained glass windows at Sacred Heart while serving as chairman of the Buildings and Grounds Committee. At St. Boniface, in the same role he provided expertise and guidance for the brick restoration of the exterior of the church. These are just some examples of how he shared his time and expertise for the welfare of many.

As a current member of the Zoning Board of the City of St. Marys, Ed was dedicated to compliance with city ordinances, providing that these did not cause undue hardship to residents unless it was necessary for the general welfare of all. Ed was devoted to his church, his community and his family.

He is survived by his wife, Dr. Clythera (Smith) Hornung; his son, Simon J. Hornung II and his wife Terri Wilson Hornung and their daughter McKenzie Lee Hornung; his daughter, Stacey J. (Hornung) Miller and her husband Timothy J. Miller and their children Gregory J. Miller and Caroline A. Miller; his nieces and nephews, the children of James and Sandra Hornung: Dennis, Vince, Karen Hornung Czekai, Julie Hornung Coolick, Amy Hornung Thwing, Paul and Blair (deceased), the children of Edward and Jane Hornung Soban: Tom Soban, Diane Soban Boyd, Lynn Soban and Tina Soban May, and the child of Bernard and Thelma Hornung: David Hornung (deceased).

 He was preceded in death by his father, Simon J. Hornung on April 21, 1989; his mother, Matilda (Tillie) Oswald Hornung on Aug. 1, 2003; his brother, James Simon Hornung on Aug. 22, 2012; 

his sister, Jane Hornung Soban on May 19, 2014; 

and his twin brother, Bernard G. Hornung on Feb. 17, 2016.

Ed was the last surviving member of his immediate family.

A Mass of Christian Burial for Edward J. Hornung will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 337 Center St., St. Marys, Pa. 15857 with Rev. Eric Vogt, OSB, as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Mark's Cemetery in Emporium.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 18 from 2-4 p.m. and from 7-9 p.m. at the

 Lynch-Green Funeral Home.

Sinnemahone Ultra Trail Run Finishes Strong

Sinnemahone Ultra Trail Run saw the number of participants double from 2015. “Offering three courses of various lengths attracts a variety of participants, from the novice that wants to hike to the experienced trail runner,” says race director, Craig Hudson. The race began Saturday morning at 7:30 with a canon start in downtown Emporium and the final runner crossed the finish line 9 hours later. The trail includes West Creek Rails Trails and DCNR forestry trails.

Two records were broken. In the 50k Josua Gorman from St Marys shattered his previous record, and ran the 33 miles in a time of 4:39:53. In the 25k Carol Dudulcovich from Port Matilda took the top spot in the women division with a time of 2:17:42.

Planning for the 2017 race is underway. The date is Saturday October 21. Registration will open January 1.

Military Banners

Its a beautiful time of year to take a walk through the streets of Emporium and tour the military banners that are present throughout the town.

 The Sylvan Heritage Council's military banner program honors our county’s veterans and active military personnel. A total of 125 banners grace our streets with pride.

Potter County-Lost Aircraft News Release

4:05 PM Austin, PA – Numerous local and state agencies are working today to locate an aircraft which was reported as overdue last evening after failing to arrive at its destination airport in Saint Catharines, Ontario, Canada.

According to initial reports, the Federal Aviation Administration in Cleveland Center contacted the McKean County 911 Center last evening after they lost radar and radio contact with a small aircraft near Keating Summit, PA. The single engine Piper Cherokee airplane was flying from Richmond (VA) International Airport to St. Catharines Airport with 3 people on board when it changed course to avoid a thunderstorm. After the aircraft changed course, all contact with the aircraft was lost. Area fire departments and search and rescue teams combed the woods in the area for hours last night into early morning before regrouping to begin again after daylight.

The Civil Air Patrol has now taken command of the operation and they are joined by numerous local resources from Potter, McKean, Cameron and Elk Counties.

Regular briefings will occur throughout the operation as more information becomes available.
