Emporium Country Club @ ToThe Driving Range

If you've never been to the Emporium Country Club, you've probably never been to their driving range.  I think its a little out of the ordinary, actually, its the ride there that's a little out of the ordinary.  Here's a video I took while my daughter drove us back to the clubhouse. Its a little shaky, and yes, that's an elk gate I happen to  mention.

Affordable Care Act

If you are one of the over 3.6 million Pennsylvanians and New Yorkers without health insurance, then you should be aware that a new online health insurance exchange or marketplace is scheduled to open October 1 for coverage effective January 1, 2014.
The exchange, a part of the Affordable Care Act, will allow people to go online and shop from an assortment of government-approved health insurance plans. Also, it will match them with tax credits to make the coverage affordable. It's open to people who don't have access to a qualified plan at work.

The tax credits are available for a single person earning just under $16,000 up to a family of four with an income of about $94,000. The amount of the tax credit will vary by income and would be forwarded directly to their health insurance plan, with the process handled by the exchange.

Governor Tom Corbett has chosen to use the federal health insurance exchange site for Pennsylvania’s online marketplace at HealthCare.gov. In New York State insurance seekers may go to www.nystateofhealth.ny.gov.

Small businesses will also be able to shop for coverage on the exchange, which is intended to allow them to enjoy size-related savings previously available only to large companies

2014 Military Banner Program

The Sylvan Heritage Council has recieved their 30th military banner application over the weekend! If you're thinking of sponsoring a banner for someone, don't delay. We are filling up fast - the deadline will be November 1st or whenever we reach our maximum number of 60. We're halfway there! Call Christine Slusarick @ 814.486.0583, or email her at christineslusarick@gmail.com for more information.  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Sylvan-Heritage-Council/177484145754944

The Sylvan Heritage Council, a group of Cameron County residents with diverse backgrounds, is committed to the betterment of our community through positive energy and action. A few of the projects that we have sponsored are: the installation of the Emporium welcome signs and the surrounding landscaping at the east and west end of town, the mural and banner projects, the new signs for the Endeavor and other local businesses, and our most recent venture is the placement of a block retaining wall at the town’s east end triangle.

These projects of the Sylvan Heritage Council are most fitting to their mission:  to pursue sustainable economic growth through the beautification, revitalization, and historic preservation of our community in such a way that capitalizes on our area’s abundant natural resources and maintains our proud local heritage.
We want our community to thrive and we intend to continue to be a driving force behind that cause.

Misty Pine Rentals Featured In The Keystone Edge

A local business is featured in The Keystone Edge
http://www.keystoneedge.com

Mark and Evelyn Keiter told a similar story about Misty Pines, a cabin rental they started in neighboring Cameron County a few years ago after Mark got laid off from a good job as a foreman in a steel mill in southeastern PA.

“After visiting relatives in the area, seeing the elk for ourselves and reading the Fermata report we decided this was the area we wanted to live in,” Evelyn Keiter explained recently by email. “We knew we wanted to be in the hospitality business and saw that there was a need for it. … We pulled up stakes, sold our home and business and moved to Cameron County to escape the rat race ... This was a scary undertaking but we were ready for a big change.”

The Keiters bought 40 acres with a scenic view and transformed an abandoned house on the property into two rental suites complete with private entrances, hardwood flooring and new appliances.

“With a lot of hard work, vision and hope, we turned that abandoned house into something special,” Keiter said. “As of September 5th we will have been open for five years, I almost can't believe it. The time has gone so quickly and we have met so many nice people.

“Often local people will ask us "’Why did you move here?’” Keiter said. “The one word answer would be ELK. Maybe if someone has never lived anywhere else they don't appreciate the beauty and excitement that's right outside their back door here in the PA Wilds but we are loving it. The possibility of seeing an elk or bear in our everyday travels does not grow old. Knowing that we are sharing our home with the majestic elk puts the "wild" in PA Wilds for us. We love being able to provide a quality place for people to stay while they are experiencing a glimpse of where we get to live every day. … There are so many other things to do and see in the area but the elk are the number one draw.”
