Police Reports

No injuries were reported in a three vehicle crash on Route 120 at it's intersection with Hercules Road in Shippen Township, Cameron County, last Thursday at 7:00 am.
Trooper John Whitcomb, who investigated, said the crash occurred as Ernest W. Merritt, 51, of Hendersonville, TN, was driving a 2005 Freightliner Columbia Eastbound on Route 120.
A 2009 Chevrolet Express driven by Matthew J. Nicklas, 36 of St. Marys, PA, began to pass Merritt's Freightliner.
The Chevrolet was followed in the pass by a third vehicle, a 2004 Freightliner Sprinter, driven by Joseph L. Testi, 51, of DuBois, PA.

In the process of overtaking the lead vehicle, the Chevrolet and the Freightliner Sprinter were directly beside the lead vehicle when that vehicle failed to maintain it's travel lane and traveled into the westbound lane where the other vehicles were passing. The passing vehicles attempted to move onto the shoulder of the westbound lane but ran out of space between the leading Freightliner and and the guardrail.

The leading Freightliner struck the two passing units in their right sides. Upon impact, the Chevrolet driver applied his brakes. The Freightliner behind him was unable to slow in time and struck the Chevrolet in the rear. The passing vehicles continued traveling east on the shoulder of the westbound lane for about 180 feet before coming to a controlled stop.

The lead Freightliner continued to travel east on SR 120, and left the scene of the crash.
Police later located the lead Freightliner at the loading dock of a local factory.
Charges are pending at District Court 59-3-01.

Casey Saline

By Victoria Stanish
"EMPORIUM – Emporium resident Casey Saline is no ordinary fan of classic music and movies - using her vivid imagination and creative skills, she transforms old cassette tapes and movie reels into unique art that has caught the interest of the Ripley's Believe It or Not! franchise.
A junior at Cameron County Junior/Senior High School, Saline recently sold two of her pieces to Ripley Entertainment Inc. for display in one of their museums. Ripley Entertainment Inc. operates 31 museums, or "odditoriums," which feature weird, unusual or rare items from around the world. Saline's two works feature John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in their roles as Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson from the 1978 movie "Grease," and a portrait of the recently deceased pop star Whitney Houston.
Saline said she thought about submitting something for the company's review after seeing a similar work on a trip to New York City.
"We actually went to Ripley's Believe It or Not! there and there was actually a cassette tape piece in one of their pamphlets they gave us," Saline said.
She said she came up with the idea of using ribbons and reels in her work prior to visiting the museum.
"It kind of started in art class. I'm in an independent study class, so that means I can come up with my own projects. So I like to look around for my own projects that I don't think anybody would do - very out-of-the-ordinary," Saline said. "I kind of look around on the internet and see different things to twist my own way."
The "Grease" portrait was actually the first piece of this type of art she had created as one of her school projects.
"That took me an entire week, including the weekend, of an art class and every class I had that gave me time to work on it, and at home after school," Saline said.
She said the process, while very time-consuming, actually consists of a simple technique.
"You know how the cassette strings across the top of it (plastic case)? The little opening at the top? I just pull that out and cut it," Saline said. "I keep pulling out the cassette tape, and gluing and gluing and gluing.
"I'm still investigating different mediums, different glues and stuff like that. I don't really mess with colored tapes, but I do colored backgrounds, whatever background color people want."
Saline said she enjoys "green" projects, or making art of recyclable materials, as well as creating pop art using the tiny circles produced by a hole punch.
"I also make dresses out of paper that are wearable. I've experimented with duct tape, but it's not as fun as making paper dresses," Saline said.
Saline said she has always enjoyed using her imagination to make a project come to life. "

Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning State Park

Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning State Park cited for energy efficiency

The new Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning State Park in Cameron County has joined three other major DCNR Pennsylvania Wilds projects in garnering honors for energy efficiency and environmental design.

Officially opened in late October 2011, the Sinnemahoning State Park building was awarded Silver LEED status by the U.S. Green Building Council. Earlier, Gold recognition was extended to the Elk Country Visitor Center, Elk County; Nature Inn at Bald Eagle in Centre County, and the Tiadaghton State Forest Resource Management Center in Lycoming County.

LEED, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, is an internationally recognized mark of design, construction and maintenance excellence that seeks to ensure buildings reflect the highest environmental and energy efficiency. Offered at four levels for new construction—Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum—the ratings gauge water and energy use, materials, and other design criteria.

Among the Sinnemahoning facility features cited were: use of heavy timber, wood doors and trim from certified forests; geothermal heating and cooling; locally supplied stone flooring and veneer; rain gardens supplying storm water quality control; special interior paints, sealants, sealers, stains, and carpeting; heat efficient roofing; and dark-sky compliant exterior lighting.

Officially opened Oct. 26, the wildlife center is one of DCNR’s key investments in the Pennsylvania Wilds, only a short distance from the Elk Scenic Drive in the heart of the north central region. The 9,300-square-foot center includes a new park office; interpretative exhibit space; an artisan gallery; and classroom and meeting room space.

DCNR has the largest number of LEED-rated buildings of any state park system in the nation, and has reduced its carbon footprint by 20 percent the past five years.
