James V. Beshel

Port Allegany - James V. Beshel, 66, of, Keating Summit, died Thursday (October 27, 2011) at his home.


He was born Aug 21, 1945 in Philadelphia, a son of Francis and Teresa Bravitz Beshel. On Feb. 11, 1989 in East Lansdowne, PA, he married Maureen T. Kennedy, who died Oct. 22, 2004.

Mr. Beshel was a graduate of Fr. Judge High School and attended Bucks County Community College.
He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army, serving from 1963 to 1969.
Mr. Beshel was employed by the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier in Bensalem, PA

He was a member of Knights of Columbus in Emporium, PA the May Hollow Sportsman Club and the Sinnemahoning Sportsman Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He is survived by
Four daughters: Donna (John) Donia, Kelly Russell, Dawn Russell all of Philadelphia, PA, and Janis (James) Doak of Sunbury, PA
One son: John Russell of Keating Summit, PA
26 Grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren
three sisters: Eleanor Razler of Philadelphia, PA, Carole Hilger of Willingboro, NJ, Norma Bush of Medford Lake , NJ

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 2 sons, Vincent Beshel in 1989, and James Russell in 2011, 4 brothers and 3 sisters.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday Nov. 1, 2011 from 5-8PM at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc, 105 N Main St, Port Allegany, PA. A Christian Wake service will be held at 5:00 PM in the funeral home

Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2011 in St Mark's Catholic Church, Emporium with the Rev. Paul S. Siebert, pastor as celebrant. Burial will be in the Portage Twp Cemetery, Sizerville. Military Honors will be accorded by the Cameron County Honor Guard.

Flu Shots 10/26/11

Elk Regional will be offering a flu shot clinic on 10/26 from 9-11 a.m. at Dr. McKimms office located on 416 N. Broad St.

The cost for a flu vaccine is $30, but that will be discounted to $25 if patients offer payment with cash or a personal check. Medicare Part B patients may have their flu shots billed to Medicare. Some Medicare HMOs will also accept flu shot billing. Patients who attend one of Elk Regional’s walk-in clinics should bring all insurance cards with them to the clinic.

Flags Lowered On Saturday to Honor Major Thomas E. Clark

Gov. Tom Corbett has ordered all U.S. and Pennsylvania Flags at the Capital Complex and at Commonwealth facilities in Cameron County lowered to half-staff on Saturday in honor of U.S. Air Force Major Thomas E. Clark of Emporium. Clark, a pilot, was shot down over Vietnam in February 1969. His remains were recently identified and returned ot the U.S. and will be interred on Saturday. All Pennsylvanians are invited to join in the tribute.

Grand Opening for the Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning State Park

Please join the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources at the grand opening of the Wildlife Center at Sinnemahoning State Park, on Wednesday, October 26, at 2:00 p.m. at the park.  Sinnemahoning, in the heart of the Pennsylvania Wilds, offers an abundance of wildlife, from bear and eagles to otters. Only a short jump off the Elk Scenic Drive, the park also is host to a small elk population.

 The Wildlife Center will help educate visitors about regional wildlife watching opportunities and photography, conservation history and stewardship practices, and provide creative ideas for exploration of this unique and rugged section of Pennsylvania.

Cassie B. Kohn

Cassie B. Kohn, 85, a resident of the Guy and Mary Felt Manor, formerly of 380 E. 5th St. Ext., died Tuesday morning (Oct. 18, 2011) at the Manor. She was born July 11, 1926, in Ronco, PA a daughter of the late Harry and Ruth Braddee Barnhart.In 1942, she married Charles "Sam" VanDivner, who died in 1962. On June 26, 1965, she married Ernest "Ink" Kohn, who died March 27, 1998.

Cassie was a Christian who had a deep and lifelong faith in God. As a teenager she worked for a photography studio in Uniontown and was also a housekeeper. Following the death of her first husband, she and her family moved to Emporium, where she continued working as a housekeeper, including at the former Sylvania Club. For the past 25 years, she had been a healthcare worker, caring for  the sick in their  own homes and had worked for the Community Nurses. Cassie was an artist and enjoyed sketching and painting. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Surviving are a daughter, Linda Hayes of Emporium; two sons, Mark VanDivner (Donna) and Earl Brent VanDivner, of Emporium; one stepson, Kevin
Kohn, (Judy Caffey) of Newville; four grandchildren, Tony VanDivner of Kersey, Chad VanDivner of Philadelphia, Ben Hayes and Jessica Hayes, both of Emporium. Two great grandsons; a sister, Minta Minerd and a brother George Barnhart both of Masontown and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, and first and second husbands, she was preceded in death by five brothers: Charles "Red",  Earl, Joe, Harry Barnhart and Rusty, in infancy; and one sister, in infancy.

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home on Thursday from 7-9 PM.
Funeral Service will be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium on Friday, October 21, 2011 at 10:00 AM with Rev. R. Scott Melott, Pastor, First Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium.

Mary Ann Waddington

Mary Ann Waddington, 87, of 529 Sizerville Rd., Emporium, died at Christ the King Manor, DuBois on Monday (October 17, 2011) morning.

She was born November 24, 1923 in DuBois, a daughter of the late George and Hannah Bloom Seyler.
Ms. Waddington had worked at Sylvania and was a waitress for many local restaurants and also worked as a sales clerk. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, Missionary Circle & Berean Sunday School Class. She enjoyed baking and loved her children and grandchildren.

Leroy A. "Roy" Swartz

Leroy A. "Roy" Swartz, 75, of 138 Hemlock St., Kersey, PA formerly of Jericho Rd., Sinnamahoning died at his sisters residence, Kersey on Saturday afternoon. (October 8, 2011)He was born July 8, 1936 in Renovo, PA a son of the late Arthur and Laura Dexter Swartz. Mr. Swartz attended Emporium Schools. He served with the US Marines. He retired from the former Smith Lumber Co in Renovo where he was a truck driver for over 25 years. Years ago he worked in Quehanna for Martin Marietta as a hot cell operator. He was a member of the Sinnamahoning United Methodist Church.

Major Thomas Clark

Major Thomas Clark will be coming home to Emporium, escorted by Patriot Guard Riders and Police, on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011 at approximately 4:00 PM. The procession will pause at his former home at 229 West 4th Street before continuing East on 4th Street to the Barnett Funeral Home.

Thomas Edward Clark was born on April 15, 1939 in Emporium, Pennsylvania as the third son of the late Otto and Josephine Schager Clark. An avid hunter and fisherman, Tom enjoyed the outdoors. He was a star fullback at Cameron County High School, graduating with honors in 1957. After attending Penn State University for two years,  Clark received an appointment to the Air Force Academy from which he graduated in 1963. The graduation ceremony included the first commencement address to the Academy from a sitting president, President John F. Kennedy.  That same year Tom married his high school sweetheart, Kathleen Mottern of Emporium. The 1963 Air Force Academy Yearbook states that Tom's goals were to be a pilot and a politician.
On February 8, 1969 Captain Clark was flying an F-100D Super Sabre, of 416th Tactical Fighter Squadron, 37th Tactical Fight Wing, in a flight of four mission over Laos. The flight controlled by an F-4 Forward Air Controller, engaged a 23mm Anti-Aircraft Artillery battery. Captain Clark's aircraft was hit by rounds from the artillery battery, burst into flames, and crashed. No parachute was observed. Aircraft in the area conducted visual and electronic searches, with negative results. Subsequent to the incident, the U.S. Air Force determined Captain Clark to be Killed in Action (KIA), Body not Recovered (BNR). The Air Force posthumously promoted Tom to the rank of Major.

On February 12, 1991, a joint U.S./Lao People's Democratic Republic team investigated the crash of Thomas E. Clark's F-100. In late 1991, a Thai citizen turned over to U.S. Officials in Thailand human remains as well as military identification tag and a partial military identification tag bearing Major Clark's name. The remains were identified as other than Captain Clark's.  In February of 1992 a team worked to excavate the suspected crash site of Thomas E. Clark in the Savannakhet Province with no apparent results. In October of 2005 a joint team re-investigated the crash site excavated in 1992. Another bone fragment was found but later identified as not part of a human. In October of 2009 another joint team re-excavated portions of the crash site and recovered human remains. After extensive examination, including isotope testing, the human remains were identified as the remains of Thomas E. Clark.

The Clark family was notified in June 2011 that the remains of Thomas E. Clark would be returned to the family.

Major Clark is survived by his widow Kathleen Mottern Clark Blair and her husband Robert, of Cedar Crest, NM , two brothers, Roger B. Clark and his wife Millie, of Emporium, and John O. Clark and his wife Linda of Virginia Beach, VA. and also by a large extended family.

In addition to his parents death Tom's brother Gerald A. Clark, of Emporium, a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, passed away in 1995

Public Visitation will be at the Cameron County High School on Friday, (Oct, 21, 2011)  from 5:00-8:00 PM..

Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at the St. Mark Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at 10:00 AM with Rev. Paul S. Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant.

Private interment, in a family plot with Thomas' mother and father, will follow with Military Honors and a USAF fly-over at the St. Mark Catholic Cemetery.

Donald E. Reigel,

Donald E. Reigel, 77, of 77 W. 4th St., Emporium died  at WCA Hospital, Jamestown, New York Thursday night (September 22,  2011)

 He was born July 1, 1934 in Kane a son of the late William P. and Clara  Benson Reigel.

 On November 19, 1934 in St. Callistus Catholic Church, Kane he married  Betty Espin Reigel, who Survives.

 Mr. Reigel graduated from Kane High School class of 1952. He was a retired  salesman in the powder metal industy for many years. He was a member of St.  Mark Catholic Church and has served on Parish Council. He was a member of  several local organizations. He enjoyed golfing and his grandchildren.

Charges to Be Filed

An Emporium driver who was clocked at 94 miles per hour in a posted 55 mph zone was found to be Driving under the Influence of Alcohol.
Jeff A. Eckert, 48, of Emporium, PA, was stopped for speeding Tuesday at 6:23 pm on Route 120 in the area of Moore Hill Road in Shippen Township, Cameron County.
State Police will file charges for DUI and related summary offenses in District Court.

Criminal Mischief

An incident that  took place  on September 15th between 5 and 7:00 PM in Shippen Township, Cameron County is being investigated by State Police at Emporium.
Unknown actor(s) smashed out the back window of a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer belonging to Tammy Burgett of Emporium, PA. Damage is estimated at $400.00.

Nancy L. Victory Farrar

Nancy L. Victory Farrar, 78, of 324 W. 4th St., Emporium died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Wednesday (September 21, 2011) morning.
She was born June 24, 1933 in St. Mary a daughter of the late Harvey and Margaret Bickmire Tompkins.
Mrs. Farrar attended Cameron County Schools and lived her entire life in Emporium. She had worked at Dominicos and the Buttonwood. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Peggy Ann Samick

 Peggy Ann Samick, 79, of 138 Airport Road, St. Marys, died on Monday morning, September 19, 2011 at Pinecrest Manor following a lengthy illness.
She was born September 4, 1932 in Cameron County, a daughter of Dorothy Berry Card of Sterling Run and the late Charles Orville Card.
On January 2, 1961 in Emporium, she married the late Albert M. "Loppo" Samick, Jr., who preceded her in death on October 30, 1999.

Mrs. Samick was Protestant by faith. She and her husband lived in Welaka, Florida for many years and enjoyed the time they had spent there. She enjoyed reading, crafts, knitting and crocheting. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Funeral Services for Peggy Ann Samick will be held at the Lynch-Green Funeral Home, 151 North Michael Street, St. Marys, on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 4:00 PM with Rev. Chris Kindle, Pastor of 1st UMC, officiating.

The family will greet and receive friends prior to the funeral on Wednesday from 2 pm until the time of the service.

Sidney D. "Sid" Summerson,

Sidney D. "Sid" Summerson, 70, of 9647 Wykoff Run Rd., Sinnemahoning, died at Shadyside Hospital-UPMC, Pittsburgh on Monday (September 19, 2011) afternoon. He was born June 19, 1941 in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Dalton "Dean" and Arlene Bair Summerson.

On September 1, 1967 in Benezette he married Mary Bonzo Summerson, who Survives.
Mr. Summerson graduated from Cameron County High School. He worked at Cameron Manufacturing for many years and also was a self employed truck driver later driving for PermaGrain. He also was a caretaker for Campowners Association. He was a member of the Down County Baptist Church.

Sizerville State Park’s 21st annual Autumn Festival

Sizerville State Park’s 21st annual Autumn Festival October 1, 2011
Noon - 4:00 PM.
Held the first Saturday of October, weather permitting, this festival is a celebration of old time skills and crafts. There will be make-it and take-it crafts, examples of old time crafts like quilting, tatting, bee keeping, woodcarving and candle making, and good food.

Debra A Murray

Debra A. Murray, 57, of 956 Murrays Mountain Rd., Emporium died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Monday (September 12, 2011) afternoon following a brief illness. She was born August 3, 1954 in DuBois a daughter of the late Frederick and Mary Lou Reitz Jackson.

On September 28, 1980 in Bloomsburg she married Erwin L. Murray, Jr., who survives.
Mrs. Murray graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1972. She had worked at Pennsylvania Pressed Metals as a secretary and retired from Adelphia in 2005. She loved sewing, knitting sweaters for many people, making quilts, crafting, camping the beach and hunting.

Tannery Heights

Ridgway State Police  are investigating a burglary at residence  409 Tannery Heights in Shippen Township.  Maria Jane Martin of St. Marys is noted as the owner of the residence. Police said upon arriving found the rear door open. Evidence at the scene led to a neighbor's home where David Wolfanger, 19, of Emporium and a known 17 year old juvenile were found along with property form the victims residence. Wolfanger and the juvenile gained entry through an open window and began removing property until they observed  State police, then fled out the rear door. Charges have been filed with Cameron County Juvenile probation against he 17 year old juvenile. Wolfanger was arraigned in from of Judge Alvin Brown for charges of Burglary, Theft and Receiving stolen property

During last Saturdays Storm football game against Dubois, players and coaches alike were proud to wear Pink in support of  the county wide "Cheer For A Cure" campaign for  Kendyl Shaffer.  Services for Kendyl will be held tonight, from 5-8 pm at the Barnett Funeral Home.

Anna Marie (Tipton) Simpson,

Anna Marie (Tipton) Simpson, 74, of  Hagerstown, MD., formerly of Emporium, PA., went to be with her Lord and  Savior on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 after a lengthy illness.
Born on June 25, 1937 in Lonaconing,  MD., she was the daughter of the late Charles William and Elmira Mae (Morton)  Tipton.  She was a graduate of Fort Hill High School in Cumberland,  MD.  She loved ceramics and crafts but her greatest joy was her  children, grandchildren and family.  She was a faithful pastor’s  wife and along with her husband Dwight served Churches in Pennsylvania for  over 35 years.

Anna Marie is survived by her husband of  54 years Dwight of Hagerstown, MD., her daughter Donna Rose and husband  Steven of Hagerstown, MD.  Sons, D. Randall Simpson and wife Sheri of  Hollidaysburg, PA., Brian Simpson of St. Marys, PA., and Brent Simpson and  wife Idalee of Hummelstown, PA.  Her grand-children, Daniel and Nathan  Rose of Hagerstown, MD., Brandon and Zachary Simpson of Hollidaysburg, PA.,  and Emma Grace, Grayson and Abram Simpson of Hummelstown, PA.  Three  brothers, Charles “Bill” Tipton and wife Faye of Cumberland, MD.,  Joseph Tipton and wife Carol of Wiley Ford, WV., and Dennis Tipton of  Cumberland, MD.  One sister, Marlene (Tipton) Cosgrove and husband  Laurence of Westernport, MD.  Two sister-in-laws, Linda (Hazelwood)  Tipton of Corpus Christi, Texas and Bonnie (Wilson) Tipton of Cumberland,  MD.

In addition to her parents, she was  preceded in death by three brothers, George, Kenneth and John  “Jack” along with two sisters, Elizabeth and Iona.

A memorial service will be held at  Minnich’s Funeral Home, 415 East Wilson Blvd. in Hagerstown, MD   21740 on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 11:00 am.  The family will  receive friends one hour prior to the service.  A graveside service will  follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Cumberland, MD.  The Rev. Steven Rose,  son-in-law, will officiate.

Kendyl M. Shaffer, 14, of 240 W Allegany Ave., Emporium, died at Childrens Hospital-UPMC, Pittsburgh on Thursday (September 8, 2011) night.
She was born April 12, 1997 in St. Marys a daughter of Kenneth and Julie Bauer Shaffer, Emporium

Kendyl was a 9th grade student at Cameron County High School.
She was actively involved in Cheerleading, Softball, rollerblading, piano and guitar.
She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church.

Surviving in addition to her parents are brothers Adam and Ryan Shaffer of Emporium.

PATRIOT DAY, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 2011

 This year the 10th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attack on the United States falls on a Sunday. The nature of this anniversary calls for special recognition at weekend liturgies. We will remember those who lost loved ones on 9/11 and those who have served or are serving in the military, firemen, ambulance and law enforcement personnel at 10:30 AM mass on Sept. 11th @ St. Marks Church.

The readings for the 24th Sunday of Ordinary Time appropriately focus on forgiveness and God’s mercy. We will pray for the Church, our nation, the world. God Bless America. Let There Be Peace on Earth.

Cameron County state law and local enforcement, fire & emergency service personnel, military veterans and members of the Reserve Forces of all faiths are invited to dress in uniform and attend the Mass.
A reception will be held following mass in O'Connell Hall.

Stolen Pickup - DUI

A Mexican man with a West Virginia address, in the US illegally, was jailed for stealing a pickup truck in Emporium and smashing it into another car early Sunday morning while under the influence of alcohol.

Angel Jadieal Cortes, 25, of Lewisburg, WV, was arraigned before District Judge Wilhelm and jailed at the Elk County Prison in lieu of $25,000. straight bail.

The incident occurred as Cortes entered a 1975 Chevrolet Silverado, owned by Michael Singer of Emporium, and parked along the north berm of West 6th Street in Emporium Boro. Upon removing the vehicle from the parked location, Cortes traveled westward and struck the rear of a parked 2007 Chrysler Sebring owned by Nathan VanSickles of Emporium.

Singer found Cortes in the driver's seat of his pickup. Cortes was taken into custody by Pennsylvania State Police near the scene of the incident. Police found Cortes to be under the influence of alcohol and upon further investigation, determined that Cortes was in the United States illegally. The Department of Homeland Security-I.C.E. was notified.

Cortes is charged with Theft of A Motor Vehicle; Unauthorized Use Of A Motor Vehicle; Driving Under The Influence; and related Summary Offenses.

Percy "Papa Joe" Bailey

Percy "Papa Joe" Bailey, 78, of 40 W. 5th St., Emporium, died at Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys on Saturday (September 3, 2011) morning. He was born October 12, 1932 in Sinnamahoning a son of the late Bruce and Gladys Summerson Bailey.

Mr. Bailey graduated from Emporium High School and served with the US Army during the Korean War. Joe retired from Keller Oil in St. Marys where he worked for many years and drove many miles during his employment. He later worked for GKN as a night watchmen and a driver. He was a member of the Sinnamahoning and Sterling Run United Methodist Churchs. He enjoyed painting, fishing, the Pittsburgh Steelers, playing softball and sponsoring the "Pappa Joes" Softball team.

Certified Nurse Midwife Joins CCMH Staff

Jennifer Middaugh, Charles Cole’s first nurse midwife, has joinedthe practice of Dr. Celso Backes and Dr. Max Laurore.  Jennifer will focuson prenatal care, birth, postpartum care, and gynecologic and reproductivehealth.  Before coming to Charles Cole, she worked as a registered nurse,certified childbirth educator and maternity staff nurse preceptor at Jones MemorialHospital.

She holds an associate’s degree in nursing from Jamestown Community College,a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Jacksonville University,and a master’s degree in midwifery from the State University of New Yorkat Stony Brook.
