Cameron County Chamber Teams up With Goblins Chocolates 

Valentine’s Day tradition continues as the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce brings St Marys chocolatier, Goblins Chocolates to the county. Goblin’s is a family owned business making delicious confections from their home. 

 Strawberries can be ordered in dark, white or milk chocolate. They are packaged as 6 for $20.00 or a dozen for $32.50 

 Orders will be accepted through February 8. Pick up will be available starting Tuesday February 13

Causer to Offer Property Tax/Rent Rebate Assistance, Reminds Seniors of Expanded Income Limits, Rebate Amounts

BRADFORD – Applications for the 2023 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program are now open, and Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) is reminding area residents that free assistance is available through his office.

Even more senior citizens and people with disabilities are eligible for rebates through the program this year thanks to a new state law that increased income eligibility limits to $45,000 for both homeowners and renters, excluding 50% of Social Security income. The maximum rebate was also increased from $650 to $1,000.

“At a time when many are struggling to meet the rising cost of inflation, this is a great opportunity for people on fixed incomes to get some help with their rent or property taxes,” Causer said. “My office is happy to help make that happen at no charge.”

In addition to offering assistance at the Bradford, Coudersport and Kane legislative offices, Causer has also scheduled a series of Property Tax/Rent Rebate clinics across the area. 
The schedule is as follows: 
Emporium Senior Center, 105 E. Fourth St., Emporium: Tuesday, Feb. 20, 10 a.m. to noon.
 Appointments preferred. Call 814-486-3707.

The Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program benefits eligible residents 65 years and older; widows and widowers 50 years and older; and people with disabilities 18 years and older.

Those who wish to attend one of the clinics or stop by Causer’s office for assistance are reminded to bring the following documentation to allow claims to be processed:

Renters will need a 2023 PA Rent Certificate, completed by their landlord, or statement from HUD office; 2023 proof of income, such as Social Security/Disability Form 1099, employment W-2, Pension/Retirement Form 1099 and Interest/Dividends Form 1099; and a driver’s license or photo identification. Some may also need to bring a death certificate, life lease or deed. Homeowners will need proof of 2023 paid property taxes to their county, municipality and school district; 2023 proof of income, such as Social Security/Disability Form 1099, employment W-2, Pension/Retirement Form 1099 and Interest/Dividends Form 1099; and a driver’s license or photo identification. Some may also need to bring a death certificate, life lease or deed. Applicants who wish to receive their rebates through direct deposit should bring a check for account information. If not, paper checks will be mailed. Disbursements should begin after July 1.

Ruth Alena (Leach) Engle

 

Ruth Alena (Leach) Engle, 103, of Reynoldsville, PA, passed away on Wednesday, January 24, 2024, while a patient at Penn Highlands DuBois in DuBois, PA.
 Ruth was born on October 13, 1920, to the late Thomas Meade and Mary Ethel (Morrison) Leach in Rathmel, PA. Ruth married Robert Harold Engle on December 25, 1940, in Reynoldsville, PA; Robert preceded her in passing January 1987. 
She was a member of the Emporium Presbyterian Church where she would teach Sunday School. She also was a member of the Board of Deacons and Boards of Elders. 
Ruth moved to Emporium in 1947 and resided there for 64 years until she relocated to Emerickville in 2012. Ruth worked for the Cameron County High School in the cafeteria for 23 years. She was a cub scout leader and a girl scout leader. 

Ruth is survived by one daughter; Myrna Ruth Haines; one son; Thomas (Shirley) Robert Engle; five grandchildren; Brad (Janet) Haines; Lon “Rob” (Kelly) Haines; Leo (Rebecca Ishmael) Engle; Jimmy (Kim) Engle; Sheila (Brian) Engle Easley; one grandson in law; John Barr; and numerous great grandchildren Kimberly; Samantha; Piper; Colbie; Alex; Katelynn; Kurtis and; Kameron. 

In addition to her parents and husband, Ruth is preceded in passing by brother; Robert Leach; sister; Joann Tatters and her husband; William Tatters; granddaughter; Lisa Barr; and son in law; John Haines.

 Family and friends will be received on Monday, January 29, 2024, from 2pm to 4pm, at the Snyder – d’Argy Funeral Home, 206 E. Main Street, Reynoldsville, PA 15851. 
A funeral service will take place immediately following the viewing, beginning at 4pm.
 Interment will take place at Smith Cemetery, Reynoldsville, Jefferson Co., PA. 
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Hormtown Community Center, in care of Sherry Bailey, 1340 Apple Orchard Road, Reynoldsville, PA 15851.

Super Bowl of Caring to Tackle Hunger

 

First Presbyterian Church 
The Deacons are currently taking donations of can goods and other non-perishable food for their yearly Souper Bowl of Caring to Tackle Hunger event which will benefit the Cameron County Community Food Pantry. Bring your donations on Sunday and vote for either Kansas City or San Francisco. Donations can also be dropped off when the church secretary is on duty Monday 10-noon or Thursday 10-noon.

Erika Frank Lentz

COUDERSPORT, PA—Erika Frank Lentz passed away on Sunday, January 28, 2024. She was born in Vienna, Austria to the parents of Anna Hopfinger Frank and Koloman Frank on August 26, 1928. She had 4 siblings, Eda, Elfie, Koloman and Walter. She had 4 half-siblings, Ernestina, Koloman, Heidi and Hans. Her family lived and siblings grew up during World War II. Erika was 10 years old when the war started.

Her half-sister Ernestina married after the occupation and left with her family for Australia with no contact from then on. Her brother Koloman at age 17 was required to serve in the military and after only six months was reported as missing in action and assumed killed.

In 1947 after being liberated by the United States she met a soldier and his name was Lawrence M Lentz from the little town of Austin, Pa. They were a couple…Lawrence was discharged from the military and came home in December 1946. His bride followed in January 1947. They were married in the little town of Austin. She was welcomed by the Lentz family with kindness, love and compassion.

Erika became a citizen of the United States in 1955. Erika’s sister Eda and brother Walter left their homeland as well and relocated to Canada sometime after. Her mother, Anna, and her sister, Elfie, came to the US around 1960. At this point, Erika had not seen her mother for those 13 years and there were NO cell phones, NO internet, and virtually no international calling. After a short visit in the States, her mom and sister relocated to Canada.

Erika and Lawrence raised seven children and one grandchild in Austin; Katherine, Lawrence, Mark, Vera, Liesa and her daughter Tara, Brenda and Melinda. It was an awesome time for us her children…we had so many relatives and it was a great family. We were not rich or rocket scientists but we were all FAMILY…we all loved each other and laughed at each other and took care of each other.

My mother never worried if we were gone all day playing with our cousins because she knew one of our aunts or grandparents would be watching out for us, feeding us or sending us home if we got into mischief. I think my mother didn’t realize how her children loved our family life until the past several years. It’s funny how parents and children see things differently. We as parents are striving for better for our children when in reality they already have the best because we love each other…..you can’t beat that!!

Erika is survived by 5 loving children, Katherine (Irvin) Saler, Lawrence K. Lentz, Vera Pesock, Brenda (Steve) Erway and Melinda Monroe. They all live in Coudersport…she had 14 grandchildren, 26 plus great-grandchildren and 12 plus great-great-grandchildren. Also survived by her sisters, Elfie and Eda, both of Canada; and her brother Walter of Emporium.

Erika was predeceased in death by her parents, her always loving and endearing husband Lawrence, her daughter Liesa who died in a motor vehicle accident in 2013, her son Mark who died unexpectedly in 2018, her grand baby Joey and her loving and caring son-in-law, Paul Pesock.

She will truly be missed by all of us who knew her and loved her…we as sisters are especially grateful to our awesome brother Larry who was a constant in our mother’s life. You were every minute with her and attentive to her. You are the best brother ever. And mom knew that…..We thank everyone who spent time with her on her last days. Who came and made us laugh. Who came and brought us food (they know we eat anything). Who called and offered help and concern. We won’t forget her many hats (she loved wearing hats), all the raisins you put in baked goods because they made it better, your scolding us (rightfully so), your accent, your Goodwill shopping, your always grocery shopping (when you needed nothing), we all have our favorite memories…don’t forget them and talk about them and pass them on..

We thank Hospice who helped us in her last days, her doctors who always tried to keep her at her best, Palliative care who gave us support at a time we needed it…her neighbors who stopped in with goodies and ‘buggy’ rides and visits…the prayers of our friends and family, anyone who touched us and her in her last days…THANK YOU… We appreciated it all. Also special thanks to her sister, Elfie, for staying with her as Erika recovered in June from surgery.

If you so desire, memorials can be made to Special Olympics (PO Box 25, Coudersport, PA 16915, ATN: Pam Walasquez) or a charity of your choice….

Rotary News Holiday Social 2024

Rotary Club of Emporium 
This month, we had our annual holiday party to celebrate the successes of the previous year and to enjoy each other's company. We thought this would be a good time to reflect back on some of the work we have completed in 2023. The Rotary year runs from July through June, so these are just a handful of the things we have worked on from July through December 2023: monthly box packing at the Cameron County Community Food Pantry, planting & watering the garden at the Guy and Mary Felt Manor, annual Rotary Picnic, clean up of the Rails to Trails, presenting the Service Above Self award to the McCann's (owners of the Emporium Food Market), donating dictionaries to the 3rd graders of Cameron County & Austin School Districts, highway clean up along Route 46, donations made to the World's Greatest Meal (fight to eradicate Polio), ShelterBox, Emporium Senior Center, and other local organizations. Of course, there were some "fun" activities as well, such as: passing out candy during Super Weekend & Trunk or Treat, lunch to show appreciation for our kitchen volunteers, chili sale during Weekend in the Wilds, creating a float for the annual Christmas parade and more. If you want to see how you can become a member of this hard-working, fun-loving team, stop by our weekly Tuesday meeting or talk to a Rotarian today!

Cameron County Community Chest Jan. Update

 

Cameron County Community Chest Jan. Update

As of January 28th, we have collected $15,806 toward our $16,600 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed so far. We are almost there. This month’s featured organization will be the Garden Club. 

The Garden Club uses funds raised for their projects to beautify our community. The members of the club plant and take care of the flowers and shrubs at the Library, Veterans’ Memorial Park, Northwest Savings Bank, Citizens and Northern Bank and the containers in the Downtown area. They do seasonal decorations inside the library. The garden Club takes care of the atrium at the Guy & Mary Felt Manor and the Assisted Living planters. The Club participates in the October Festival at Sizerville State Park and has a display at the Cameron County Fair. They also do litter pickup and recycling for a two mile stretch of Route 120W 3 times a year as part of the “Adopt-A-Highway” program. Several years ago, they were able to purchase and install a Blue Star Memorial Highway Marker at the Cameron County Veterans’ Memorial Park. The object of the club is to develop the knowledge and love of gardening for the mutual benefit of the members and community.

The club has many activities planned for 2024. We will start our year with a kick-off dinner. We will have a program to entertain and educate us with details forthcoming. On Earth Day in April we will do the highway clean-up for the spring. In May we will be looking forward to planting the new containers on Fourth Street purchased by the Borough as part of their beautification project for our downtown. We also will be planting at the Vets’ Park, Northwest Savings Banks, the library, the Senior Center and Citizens and Northern Bank areas. We are planning to take two field trips this year; one to State College to enjoy the newly renovated Arboretum and one to Bradford to Deer Springs Homestead. In the fall we always participate in the Jan Hampton Conservation night at the fair and provide a hands-on natural craft for the children and at the Sizerville State Park Autumn Festival. We plan to enjoy the harvest in September with a potluck dinner and share vegetables and plants with each other. As always all are welcome to attend. It is always fun to see what we can create in the fall with dried materials that are available in nature or ones we have dried ourselves. We will have that meeting in October or be seen at Sizerville for the Festival. November brings in colder weather and we prepare for the holidays with the “Decorating with Greens” in the downtown area. We will end our year with a Christmas gathering. 

Watch for information on the upcoming events and ways to help in our community. Volunteers and new members are always welcome. The 2024 Fund Drive will stay open until September 30 th . No donation/memorial is too small.
