Wine & Design: Design Trends for the Roaring 20’s

Wine &  Design: Design Trends for the Roaring 20’s

Hey, everyone!! We have scheduled the Roaring 20’s Design Trends seminar! I will be presenting it on Sunday, February 23rd at Rich Valley Wines from 5-7pm. I’ll be adding the event to my main (CDH Designs) page shortly. I would love it if you could all help spread the word!

I am especially excited to start these events back up and the winery is the natural venue to host them! I also helped them with their design, and there are many things I can show as examples in the space that are “on trend.”

See the event sign up here!

PRELIMINARY 2020-21 HUNTING/TRAPPING SEASONS APPROVED

The PA Game Commission gave preliminary approval to several changes today; the three Sundays for hunting (in archery deer, firearm bear season and rifle deer season–three consecutive Sunday’s in November) as well as making the entire deer rifle season antlered and antlerless the entire season. Here is the full release from the PGC on the preliminary approvals.

The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners today gave preliminary approval to hunting and trapping seasons and bag limits for the 2020-21 license year.

Modifications proposed for the 2020-21 seasons include: expanding Sunday hunting opportunities on three days – Sunday, Nov. 15 for archery deer hunting, Sunday, Nov. 22 for bear hunting during the bear firearms season, and Sunday, Nov. 29 for deer hunting during the firearms deer season; allowing concurrent hunting of antlered and antlerless deer statewide for the duration of the 14-day firearms deer season; shifting the statewide general bear season to run from Saturday through Tuesday; bringing back a three-day Thanksgiving turkey season, running Wednesday through Friday, in many Wildlife Management Units (WMUs); adding a week to the archery bear season, creating an overlap in the first week with the muzzleloader deer and bear seasons; opening squirrel season statewide on Sept. 12; permitting either-sex pheasant hunting statewide, outside of Wild Pheasant Recovery Areas; shortening the length of the fall turkey season by one week in WMUs 4D and 4E in response to declining local turkey populations; opening bobcat hunting and trapping seasons in WMU 2B; opening river otter trapping seasons in WMUs 1A, 1B and 2F; increasing the season bag limit for beavers from 40 to 60 in WMUs 1A and 1B in response to nuisance complaints; and eliminating the extended elk season held outside the Elk Management Area given that no elk ever have been harvested in this season.

Goatsrue Workshops

click on photo to enlarge view

We have a new grant to treat an invasive plant which is also a PA listed noxious weed – Goatsrue, in the area. Landowners can attend the workshop and sign up for a free treatment program. This plant is toxic to livestock and is regulated by the PA Dept. of Agriculture. Landowners should make efforts to eliminate it from their property; our program can help them.

This plant is fairly common in the Smethport area and a threat to the rest of PA if allowed to spread.

Cameron County Native Recognized for his Volunteer Service

I really enjoy sharing stories about Cameron County, and there's only one that tops that, sharing stories about people from Cameron County!

Hats off to Pete Petty for his volunteer work in the McKenzie River community area.

Here's the well deserved shout out to Pete- "BIG SHOUT OUT to congratulate Pete Petty recently honored by McKenzie River Trust for his more than 100 hours of volunteer service caring for Finn Rock Reach. Pete is likely single-handedly responsible for the removal of thousands of pounds of garbage from conservation and public lands along the McKenzie River. Pete collaborated to build a strong volunteer corps while volunteering in many, many other capacities including the McKenzie Track, community centers, school, and most likely more than we can mention. We are continuously inspired by his generosity of spirit. Pete and Monty raised more than $3000.00 collecting bottles, donating the funds to local charities. Thank you Pete for your dedication to the McKenzie River communities! McKenzie River Trust celebrated their 30th anniversary this year. From a dream of a few to preserve the McKenzie River, the MRT has grown to protect over 5,500 acres in 8 different watersheds with the power of thousands of fans, members, volunteers, partners, and staff."

Thanks goes out to his daughter Missy for permitting me to share this story.

Basket Classes Planned for 2020

Basket artist Catherine Snyder from Potter County encouraging people to antler and shed hunt this spring. In August she will teach a basket class using those found items! On March 14 Snyder will teach an Easter Basket. Students will select their choice of shape and colors for the class. The price is $33.00 and class will be held 9am-2pm. Seating is limited to 10.

On June 20 the focus will be on creating a market basket or casserole carrier. Students may select the handle type and learn shaping techniques. The price is $45.00 and the class will be held from 9am-2pm. Only 10 students will be accepted in the class.

The antler basket class will be held August 15 from 9am-5pm. The cost is $60.00. Students asked to bring their antlers to the chamber prior to the class, so they may be prepared for use in a basket. The class is limited to 8 students.

Taylor V. Lewis

Taylor V. Lewis “beloved son, brother, grandson, and uncle”

COUDERSPORT, Pa.---Taylor V. Lewis, 13, of Coudersport, went home to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 12, 2020, after tragically experimenting with a horrible fad of aerosol propellant inhaling.

He was son of Thomas L. and Valerie E. (Gerbec-Lewis) Werstler.

Born on Thursday, November 30, 2006, in Coudersport, to birth parents Vaughn Lewis, and Katherine Thompson of Emporium, Pa.

Taylor was a seventh grade student in the enrichment program at the Austin Area High School. He attended the Austin Free Methodist Church. Taylor was a very intelligent boy who loved working on everything mechanical, including riding mowers, mini-bikes, electric fans, and even creating his own battery fed lights. He loved fishing; hunting; working on cars with his Dad; spending time with, and helping his family; collecting leaves and studying geography; and collecting rocks with his nieces, Nadia and Irissa. He also liked playing video games; building forts with “Sissy”, Jessica; swimming; camping; and KFC, Nashville Hot chicken was his favorite. He knew most all cars by make, model, engine, etc., and always watched Counting Cars and Top Gear. His greatest loves were his family and being outdoors.

Basic Sign Language Class to be Offered in Coudersport

How many times do we encounter hearing impaired people and wish that we could communicate with them? As we age, we gradually lose some of our hearing. Sign language can help. Also, mothers of pre-lingual children can use sign language as a tool with their little ones. Here is your opportunity to learn basic sign language that could help you or someone you care about.

This course will cover beginning sign language, the alphabet, conversational phrases and a variety of commonly used signs. In addition, basic facts essential to the correct use of the language will be addressed. A dedicated student could learn as many as 800 signs, and understand signing and interpreting rules, basic deaf culture, and medical situations that cause deafness and loss of hearing. An intermediate course may be offered depending on interest.

This course will be taught by Sheri Greene and is scheduled for Tuesdays, January 28 – April 7, 2020 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Coudersport office of the Education Council. The cost is $160/person. To register, call (814) 274-4877 or visit www.pottercountyedcouncil.org .
