EMPORIUM, Pa. – A local high school marching band is getting the chance
to fly thousands of miles to take part in a parade that commemorates a
major piece of American history.
The Cameron County High School marching band was chosen to represent the
entire state of Pennsylvania in Hawaii for the annual Pearl Harbor Day
parade.
The band members said it’s an honor to represent Pennsylvania in Hawaii.
They found out they were chosen a year-and-a-half ago, and since the
announcement, the band and a large part of the community have been
working tirelessly to make the trip a reality.
“I’m just really proud of our band,” said senior drum major Kate
Caldwell. “I can’t believe we’ve waved this far.”
It’s pride shared by all 56 band members, the band director and the
community.
“I could not be prouder of the group,” said band director Daniel
Sensenig. “Just the kids that we have now and all the students that have
come before, to give us this reputation, that somebody from somewhere
saw our band and thought that highly of us to recommend us to the
Marines to be the official representatives. It’s just mind-blowing.”
The song list consists of a mix of songs that honor veterans, and also a
joint tribute of “God Bless America” feature 1,000 musicians from other
bands throughout the country – a medley of gratitude for service.
“It’s a way to say ‘Thank you’ through music,” said Sensenig.
It’s also the first time this band has done something like this.
“I mean, this is like the biggest stage most of us will ever perform
on,” said junior drum major Vinny Olivett. “I can’t wait to perform.
A performance that wasn’t cheap.
The trip costs $95,000, an opportunity made possible by some of the same
veterans the parade will honor – The Cameron County Veterans pitched in
$5,000.
“We’re pretty proud of the fact that Emporium is representing
Pennsylvania, and we have gotten a lot of other donations from other
legions and VFW’s within the state to help out with this too,” said Bob
Foster, secretary/treasurer of the Cameron County Veterans Club. “I
don’t know. It doesn’t even feel like it’s real yet.”
The band has a busy scheduled ahead.
There will be another practice Wednesday night, Thursday night, and then
they will take a six-hour bus ride to Newark Airport, then a 13-hour
flight to Hawaii.
They will perform on Pearl Harbor Day, and the next day before making
the trek back to Emporium.
