Cameron County Community Chest 2025 Fund Drive – Nov. Update

Cameron County Community Chest 2025 Fund Drive – Nov. Update
We are 6 weeks into the 2025 fund drive. We have had a great start! Through Nov. 18th, we have collected 9,366.00 toward our goal of $16,600. Thanks to all who have contributed. This drive will run through September 30, 2025.

Watch for our monthly updates. Each month we will feature a write up on one of the organizations that the Cameron County Community Chest contributes to. This month we will feature the Package Team. A group of Rich Valley Women started the Package Team over 20 years ago. The team currently sends out around 65 to 70 packages (a little piece of Cameron County for Christmas) each year to our local service men, women and reservists. Boxes are filled with snacks, coffee, toiletries, paper, pens, newspapers, playing cards and letters from the kids. Some items are donated by local businesses and churches. Other items are purchased. Postage is the largest cost. If you would like to find out more about the Package Team, get your Service Person on the list, or make a donation to the Package Team, please contact Karin Schatz at (814) 486-0573, Text cell phone at (814) 512-0936 or e-mail at thepackageteamcc@gmail.com.

No donation/memorial is too small. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to: Cameron County Community Chest, PO Box 134, Emporium, PA 15834, Attn: Judd Schager . Help support the Recreation Board, Community Nurses, Red Cross, Friends of the Library, the Package Team, the Garden Club, and Special Community Requests/Events.

Square Timber Wild Area Designated an Old Growth Forest

Elk State Forest
Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) Deputy Secretary John Norbeck joined Old-Growth Forest Network leadership to announce the induction of Elk State Forest's Square Timber Wild Area into the national Old-Growth Forest Network, an organization that connects people with nature by creating a national network of protected, mature, and publicly accessible native forests.
This is Cameron County's first designated old-growth forest. Square Timber Wild Area spans more than 5,600 acres and features a variety of tree species including stands of dry oak-heath, red oak mixed hardwood, northern hardwood, gray birch, white pine, and red maple forests. Brian Kane, Mid-Atlantic Regional Manager with the Old-Growth Forest Network said “The Commonwealth shows a remarkable continuity in identifying and safeguarding these rare and important forests. Square Timber will continue to mature and grow in its ecological value over time and provide great ecological and cultural value to the Cameron County region.”
All forests are essential to a healthy ecosystem, but old-growth forests are particularly valuable for their unique structure. They retain more carbon and nitrogen than younger forests, improving water and air quality.
For more information about old-growth forests, visit DCNR's website at:

This nearly 120-year-old second growth forest contains stands of Dry Oak – Heath Forest, Red Oak – Mixed Hardwood Forest, Northern Hardwood Forest, Aspen/Grey (Paper) Birch Forest, Hemlock (White Pine) Forest, and Red Maple Forests. Square Timber Wild Area lies within the vast, very steep Elk Creek State Forest in Emporium Pennsylvania.

New Emergency Medicine Degree @ Pitt-Bradford

The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford recently announced it is working with the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh to provide a new, four-year emergency medicine degree on the Bradford campus. This is great news for students and for rural health care!

Students in the emergency medicine program will be Pitt-Bradford students for all four years, paying a lower Pitt-Bradford tuition and receiving Pitt-Bradford scholarships. Like all Pitt-Bradford students, they will earn a degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Emergency medicine students will spend their first two years of college taking generalized college classes in basic subjects, as well as a four-credit course to become an emergency medical technician.

If accepted into the emergency medicine program, students will spend their junior year completing and obtaining their paramedic certification and gaining experience outside of the lab and classroom alongside emergency medical professionals. Senior year will be spent taking courses in critical care medicine and other program-related courses as well as completing graduation requirements.

According to the University of Pittsburgh, about 25% of graduates from its School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences’ emergency medicine program go on to work in the field of emergency medicine. Another 25% of graduates obtain the degree to prepare for medical school.

Final Leaf Collection in the Emporium Borough

Gordon Leary Vogt

Gordon Leary Vogt, Jr., 65, of Emporium, PA passed away at his residence on Tuesday morning (November 12, 2024). He was born September 29, 1959 in Tonawanda, New York (outside of Buffalo), and is the eldest son of Gordon Leary Vogt Sr. and Mary Krause Vogt.

Gordon graduated from Marcos de Niza High School in Tempe, Arizona, in 1977 and then briefly attended Mesa Community College. He often reminisced about “driving fast” down the highway with Led Zeppelin blaring in the car with his friends, missing the ease of his younger days. He left community college to pursue large-scale corporate manufacturing of explosives and large machinery for 30 years, where he gained lifelong friendships as well. Building large machines, robots, and rockets were part of Gordon’s favorite pastimes as he was a curious learner. In a perfect world, Gordon wished to fly planes - though his tall 6’9” stature had other plans and kept him from fitting in the cockpit. He loved photography, crossword puzzles, curly fries, guitar playing, and drawing his comics of “Beezer”, an outdoorsman who lacked all common sense. Known as a “gentle giant” to his friends and family, Gordon was not perfect but always paid attention to detail. He loved to connect over sarcastic banter and had a big belly laugh. When in doubt, Gordon enjoyed a good Monty Python joke, Law and Order, and the History Channel. He preferred his rock music loud and his time in nature quiet, and always stole Reese’s out of his daughter’s Halloween candy basket when she wasn’t looking. His friends and family miss him already.

Gordon is survived by his daughter, Megan Vogt, Tallahassee, FL; sister, Tracey V. Albro (Trevor, Sr.), Purcellville, VA; sister, Genny Tilton (Chris), Coudersport, PA; brother, Michael Sheldon Vogt (Shelly), Roulette, PA; sister, Barbara Aldridge (Dustin), Edgewater, MD; several nieces and nephews; Brianne Vogt, Heather Albro, Trevor Albro, Jr., Renee Bittorf, and Nathan Aldridge.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother.

There will be No Visitation. A Memorial will be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium, PA on Thursday (November 21, 2024) at 11:00 AM with Bob Spaeth officiating.

Online Condolences may be placed at www.BarnettFuneralHome.net
