Margaret J. Simon

Margaret J. Simon, 89, of the Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium, PA, formerly of 16 W 5th St, Emporium, PA, passed away Thursday evening (March 22, 2018). She was born July 12, 1928 in Emporium, PA a daughter of the late Roy and Mary (Welch) Stroup. On August 12, 1950 in Emporium, PA she married John A. Simon who preceded her in death in February of 2003.

Marge graduated from Emporium High School and from Penn State University where she received her BA in Education. While at Penn State she was a member of the Blue Band. She retired in 1988 after 26 years with the Cameron County School District. She was the District’s first elementary librarian. She was active in the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. She was also very involved in each of her children’s activities’ volunteering many hours with each organization. She was a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, where she led the effort to reorganize the church library. She was also an active member of the Cameron County Historical Society.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy (Robby) McCollum, Charleston, SC; Mary (Tim) Meisel, Emporium; four sons, John P. Simon, Ridgway; Michael (Rita) Simon, West Seneca, NY; Steven (Sandy) Simon, Mechanicsburg, PA; Robert (Mary Jo) Simon, Pittsburgh, PA; twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Eileen Geleskie, and a brother, Edwin Stroup.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at St. Mark’s Catholic Church, 235 East Fourth St., Emporium, PA on Monday, March 26, 2018 at 12:00 PM, with the Reverend Paul Siebert, Pastor, as Celebrant. 

Visitation will be at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 East Fourth St., Emporium, PA on Monday, at 11:00 a.m. followed by Mass at St. Mark’s Church and graveside service at St. Mark’s Catholic Cemetary. 

Burial will be in the St. Mark’s Catholic Cemetery, Emporium, PA. 

Memorial contributions may be made to the Emporium Volunteer Fire Department, 419 N. Broad St., Emporium, PA 15834.
