Benefits of Belonging to a Senior Center

Benefits of Belonging to a Senior Center

As we grow older, it’s important to remain socially active and engaged in our community. One way to do this is by joining a Senior Center. Senior Centers offer a variety of benefits that can improve life for older adults. Here are some benefits of belonging to a senior center:

1. Socialization: Senior centers provide a space for older adults to socialize and make new friends. It’s an opportunity to interact with people who share similar interests and experiences.
2. Health and wellness: Senior centers often offer fitness classes, health screenings, and nutrition programs that can help older adults maintain their physical and mental health.
3. Education and enrichment: Senior centers offer classes and workshops on a variety of topics, such as art, technology, and financial planning. These classes can help older adults continue learning and growing. 4. Volunteer opportunities: Many senior centers offer volunteer opportunities, which can provide a sense of purpose and fulfillment for older adults.
5. Access to resources: Senior centers often have staff members who can provide information and referrals to resources in the community, such as transportation services, housing assistance, and legal services.

At the Emporium Senior Center, we warmly invite you to enjoy delicious meals and a variety of fun activities like Bingo games, billiards, cards, puzzles and the coffee is always on. There is always something for everyone and we’d love to see you there.

We are currently accepting the annual dues of $10 and if you are a member and haven’t paid your dues yet, stop in and do so. If you would like information about the dues and membership, stop in and see the secretary and she’ll take care of your questions and encourage you to join us.

This past year we had some returning favorites like the 5 th Saturday Bingo, a homemade dessert and ice cream social, and many other fundraisers. We also held our first Senior Expo and we are planning to do the 2 nd Annual Senior Expo in June of this year. We are a self-funding center, so we must raise all our funds to operate and this past year we were blessed to have many raffles and fundraisers that make this beneficial to all. We wish to thank all our Officers, Board Members, volunteers and the public who supported us. We couldn’t have this center without all the community support.

Look for our Senior Center Ramblings that are in the newspaper monthly keeping everyone informed of happenings and upcoming events.

We have an exciting year planned for 2025 so be watching for articles in the paper along with other advertising. Our first event will be a Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday January 18 th from 4-6PM and all proceeds will be donated to the Guy & Mary Felt Manor Expansion Project.
Hope to see you there.

One other advantage to having such a large facility is that we can offer rental opportunities for Birthday Parties, Anniversaries, meetings and other events. Just stop in and get details.

Belonging to a Senior Center can provide a sense of community and support for older adults. If you or someone you know is looking for a way to stay socially engaged and active, I encourage you to consider joining a senior center.

In Cameron County we are blessed to have two centers: one in Emporium at 105 E. 4 th Street, phone 814-486-3707 or Driftwood at 7806 Bridge Street, Driftwood, phone 814-546-2331.
Hope you reach out to learn more about the benefits of belonging to a senior center.
