Weekend in the Wilds Breaks Records
For the second consecutive year Cameron County celebrated weekend in the wilds July 1 -3 by breaking several records. Organizers say more than 1,000 ducks participated in the Firequacker Duck Derby held Saturday. The fundraiser is hosted by the Cameron County Fireworks committee and with the help of the Emporium Water Company, and Emporium Volunteer Fire Department North Broad Street is flooded so rubber ducks can paddle to the finish line. This year the ducks were cheered on by Susie Singer and her duck Puddles. The winners of the duck race included Lisa Spaid from Johnsonburg, Shelly Peters from Emporium captured second place and third went to Bentlee Dixon from Emporium.
Chamber director Tina Solak says the duck derby was just one of the records broken. At the car show Friday nearly one dozen children competed in the Power Wheel Demolition Derby held at Emporium Food Market and Emporium Ace Hardware parking lots. Food and music greeted car enthusiasts.
More than 60 vendors lined Fourth Street. The number of visitors swelled the downtown Saturday. At least 70 took to the woods to hunt for Big Foot this year. The number of hunters participating continues to grow. The event is a fundraiser for Mountaineer Search & Rescue. Food trucks were added to the fireworkevent Saturday night. Both reporting brisk sales and promising to return next year.
Smoker Insane Terrain Offroad Park took center stage Sunday afternoon with mud barrel racing. More than 600 spectators filed into the event area off Sizer Run Road. The only event to be canceled was the outdoor movie set for Friday night. A thunderstorm rolled through downtown and forced the movie cancellation. The success of the event is obvious based on 15 vendors reserving spots for 2023. Weekend in the Wilds will be held June 30-July 2 and include car show, vendors, fireworks and a race at Smokers Insane Terrain Offroad Park.
