STARTING A FAMILY TREE?
STARTING A FAMILY TREE?
Genealogy Documentary! The movie
entitled "Family Tree" will be
shown Saturday November 1, 2014 from 1-3
PM at the Chamber of Commerce at 34 East 4th street, Emporium, PA, sponsored by
the Cameron County Historical Society
If you have
ever wondered about genealogy and your roots this is the movie you need to see.
Benjamin
Bratt narrates a feature-length done by the History Channel that combines the
history and mystery of names with a genealogical search. Traveling from ancient
China to medieval Europe, from Africa to the Wild West, in which they search
through slavery, the Indian Wars, and the great wave of U.S. immigration. As
actor William Baldwin and "Braveheart" screenwriter Randall Wallace
trace their family trees, we learn the genealogist's tools and look to the
future.
Can
we move beyond written records to prehistoric times?
From the
dawn of time to the epic sweep of the twentieth century, from the conflicts to
the inventions that changed the world.
"Family Trees" captures the glory, tragedy, and drama of the
human experience.
"Family Tree" guides you through steps taken to
look at the family history of different individuals. It also gives you
information on how to go about getting information about your own family
history.
Local
genealogists from the Historical Society will be on hand to take questions on
family searches immediately following the movie.
Grab a
grandparent, another family member or a friend and learn how to start your tree
at the Chamber of Commerce in Emporium we are looking forward to seeing you
Saturday November 1, 2014 1-3 PM

Christmas Parking Meter Boxes Available
Christmas Parking Meter Boxes Available
The hand painted boxes which covered the parking meters in downtown Emporium will not be used this Christmas season according to Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Tina Johns Solak. “The boxes were painted by students, residents of Guy and Mary Felt Manor, and families,” explained Johns Solak, “Unfortunately after three years of use, they have fallen into disrepair and will not be used.”
The painting on the boxes remain untouched and the chamber is offering them to the artists. If parents would like the boxes, or those that painted them would like them for a memento stop in the chamber during business hours, where the boxes are on display and can easily be identified. The boxes not claimed by November 10 will be destroyed.
“The chamber wants to thank everyone who worked on that project! It was very successful in bringing generations together,” explained Johns Solak.

Celebrate West Creek Rails to Trails
Celebrate West Creek Rails to Trails
The first phase of the West Creek Rails to Trails is complete. The nearly 6 mile section stretches from the caboose at the eastern end of Emporium to the intersection of Moore Hill Road
In conjunction of the Sinnemahone Ultra Marathon a ribbon
cutting will take place Saturday October 18 at 3pm. “Everyone is welcome to participate, wear
your walking/running shoes, hop on a bike or ride your wheelchair on the newly
finished surface,” says Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director

and South Broad Street. This area is the
hub for the Sinnemahone 50k. Legacy and
Down County Country Boys will perform 11am-6pm.
Food and fall flea market vendors will line the Broad and Fourth Street
areas.
The West Creek Rails to Trails project has been ongoing
since the rails were taken out out by the Allegheny & Eastern Railroad, a division of the Buffalo &
Pittsburgh Railroad Company.
Johns Solak says the trail is receiving heavy use. “The credit for this project belongs to those
that had the vision, the West Creek Rails to Trails Association, the St Marys
Snowmobile Association and the contractors including Jeff Ream and Solveson
Contracting.”
The chamber is working with downtown Emporium
businesses on unique opportunities for expansion due to the expected year round
use of the trail. Many of the businesses
have purchased directional signs so travelers can find their
establishments. Those signs will be
installed in the next few weeks.
