Ellen N Lyon

Ellen N. Lyon, 97, passed away quietly on Sunday morning, December 11, 2022 in the Guy and Mary Felt Manor, Emporium with her son Paul and daughter-in-law, Sue, and her faithful caregivers sitting by her side. This sweet, sweet woman is now with her Lord and Savior.

Ellen Grace Nickler was born in Emporium on November 3, 1925, to Adam and Ellen

(Nell) Metz Nickler. Ellen grew up in Oil City PA where she lived until her sophomore year of High school, when the family moved back to Emporium and bought the farm that Paul and Sue now own. Ellen worked in the school office before graduation and then at Sylvania Electric in Emporium where she met the love of her life, Lyle Lyon, who worked there after returning from World War II.

Ellen and Lyle were married on June 15, 1946. In 1950, they purchased their home on Poplar Street where they lived and raised their family until Ellen moved to the Guy and Mary Felt Manor in January of this year. They had four children, Paul (Sue) of Emporium, Margie (Larry Kelly) of Allentown, Ray (Kathy) of Indiana, PA, and David, (Mollie) of Hermitage. They had eleven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, and one great, great granddaughter. Ellen has many nieces and nephews who loved her dearly and of course her sister-in-law, Twila Lyon Grimm who loved her like a true sister.

In addition to her parents, and her husband Lyle in 2016, she was preceded in death by one sister, Alice Cavenaugh, one brother, Donald Nickler, and one granddaughter, Christine Medley.

Ellen loved to bake and to sit on her front porch and wave at her neighbors. She was famous for her fudge, her egg custard, and her cinnamon rolls and lately for her colorful socks. She retired from Sears and Roebuck in Emporium where she was employed as the teletypist for many years. She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Emporium where she served as the church treasurer for many, many years. Ellen was also a life member of the Ladies Firemen's Auxiliary. She belonged to the Order of Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron twice and as District Deputy Grand Matron. She and Lyle were members of the Campers and Hikers in Emporium and enjoyed years of camping and traveling the country in their Air Stream trailer.

A life well lived. Rest in peace, Ellen, your memory and legacy lives on.

Friends may call at the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home in Emporium on Friday, December 16, 2022 from 4-7 p.m. at which time an Eastern Star Service will be held.
There will also be a visitation in the First United Methodist Church one hour prior to Funeral & Committal services which will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 17 with Rev. Dr. Andrew Spore, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Moore Hill Cemetery, Emporium.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

  1. Ellen was a very wonderful person. She will be missed by many. I’ve known her most of my life, as her family lived in our neighborhood. My prayers and sympathy go out to Paul and her entire family. Rest In Peace Ellen, Fly High 🕊️
