CC Farmers Market Introduces Hobby Center & Bitsy's Crafty Corner

Cameron County Farmers Market

Today we would like to welcome back to the market another mother and daughter duo, this time a crafty pair, Kelsie Kearney with Hobby Center and Elizabeth Micheal with Bitsy's Crafty Corner!

Kelsie was first on board with the market last year debuting her hand-made creations including adorable fairy garden ornaments sculpted from clay, cute earrings and coasters made from pearler beads. Since then she has branched out to make many more fun things like decorative hair accessories, magnets and rings. This winter she picked up a new skill, crocheting, and has made a series of super cute animal stuffies that she will be bringing to the market next weekend. Her items are geared more towards kids so make sure you make market day a family outing and bring the young ones to shop at Kelsie’s stall!

When Elizabeth joined the market later in the season she resurrected an old passion of hers, sewing and design. She brought a number of functional and innovative items showcasing her flair for design and love of funky fabrics. Her creations range from bags and make-up pouches to key chains, bookmarks and pet toys. She will be bringing back those designs as well as adding a few more. She hopes to make sewn flower magnets with paperclips for paper/picture holders, seasonal items like Christmas stockings, gift bags, gift card holders, hair accessories and pins. If you love one-of-a-kind items Elizabeth will have something unique for you!

It’s exciting to see what this creative pair comes up with next so be sure to stop by our first market of the season on Saturday, May 11th, 9am to 12pm to see what they have in store for you! We will be set up at the Emporium Town Square so see you there!

Finalists announced in 2024 PA Wilds $50,000 BIG IDEA Contest

The 2024 PA Wilds Big Idea Contest, an initiative aimed at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in Cameron, Clinton, Lycoming, Potter, and Tioga Counties, has announced its finalists. After rigorous evaluation, six outstanding contenders have emerged, each presenting groundbreaking solutions in diverse fields.

The finalists are:

Brite-Liter, founded by Benjamin Kranz (Hughesville, PA): Brite-Liter introduces a revolutionary tool to enhance literacy retention without the use of blue-light emitting screens. Their high-light projector stimulates cognitive responses, increasing engagement and retention, thus offering a valuable resource for parents and educators alike.

Good Things Growing, founded by Joshua Zucal (Emporium, PA): Good Things Growing focuses on biochar production, presenting a dynamic solution for soil remediation and holistic health enhancement. Their innovative approach harnesses the potential of biochar to sequester carbon, improve soil quality, and promote sustainable agriculture.

Otzzy, founded by Tim Emerick (Renovo, PA): This family-run business has developed an interactive tap-to-play interface app, revolutionizing personalized keepsake gifts. Otzzy’s innovative platform allows users to seamlessly embed cherished videos or heartfelt messages into a range of physical products, bridging the gap between the digital and physical realms.

Roambler, founded by Katie Caputo (Duboistown, PA): Roambler revolutionizes experiential tourism in Pennsylvania by seamlessly connecting adventure seekers with local guides and hosts. Operating as a marketplace platform, Roambler bridges the gap between service providers and consumers in the peer-to-peer web-based economy, streamlining transactions, managing payments, and offering essential communication tools. With a scalable platform, Roambler aims to become the go-to destination for unforgettable guided experiences, making it easier than ever for adventurers to explore the Keystone State.

Thompson Farms, founded by Rob Thompson (Coudersport, PA): Thompson Farms proposes a sustainable solution with its wool pellet production, addressing the need for locally sourced, organic soil amendments. Their innovative process promises multiple regenerative byproducts, including bio-oil and wood vinegar, providing essential nutrients while revitalizing rural economies.

Woodland Biomass Innovations, founded by Luca Pandolf (Wellsboro, PA): This team aims to transform biomass into sustainable liquid fuels, offering unparalleled efficiency in the conversion process. Their project, currently in the engineering phase, holds promise for reducing carbon emissions while promoting economic development in the region.

Each finalist brings a unique vision and commitment to innovation, reflecting the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit of the region. As they prepare to compete for up to $50,000 in prize money and additional support, the PA Wilds Big Idea Contest celebrates their creativity and dedication to making a positive impact.

“We are thrilled to announce the finalists of the Big Idea Contest,” said Cathy Von Birgelen, at Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern PA. “More than sixty individuals downloaded applications, and the challenging task for the evaluation panel was to select six finalists from the pool of many high-quality applications. We’re excited to hear more from each finalist at the final pitch event on June 30.”

LaKeshia Knarr, Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Director at PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship, added, “These visionary entrepreneurs exemplify the spirit of innovation and demonstrate the potential for transformative change in our rural communities here in the Pennsylvania Wilds. We congratulate them on their achievements and look forward to supporting their continued success.”

The finalists will now advance to the next stage of the competition, where they will pitch their ideas to a panel of judges and compete for the top prizes. The winners will be announced at the contest finale, where attendees can also participate in selecting the People’s Choice Award recipient. For more information about the Big Idea Contest and to stay updated on the finalists’ progress, visit cnp.benfranklin.org/bigidea.

The 2024 PA Wilds Big Idea Contest is a partnership between PA WILDS Center for Entrepreneurship, Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Central and Northern Pennsylvania, with funding support provided by the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC).

CC Farmers Market Introduces Mike Thompson

Cameron County Farmers Market

It wouldn’t be a farmers market without our growers so today we would like to welcome back to the market our backyard farmer, Mike Thompson!

Mike is a passionate gardener who has done wonders in the front and backyards of his house in downtown Emporium. It’s a limited space but he has made use of every inch of it, filling it with raised beds of all sizes.

He grows a wide range of vegetables, starting a lot of them from seed in early spring and transplanting them outside when the weather gets warmer. He will have all of the same deliciously fresh produce he grew last year, including peppers of all 3 colors, several kinds of tomatoes, beets, snap peas, spinach, radish, lettuce, rhubarb, beans, cucumbers, onions and more. At the request of his customers he’s also trying a couple of new vegetables this year; leeks and Dakon white radishes.

For the vegetables requiring more room to grow Mike farms a plot of land outside of town where he grows a selection of acorn, butternut and buttercup squashes, all of which he will be bringing to the market for lucky shoppers to pick up.

As well as supplying the community with wonderful produce Mike also offers a knife sharpening service. Bring your knives to the market (all types of knives are possible) and he will sharpen them for you while you shop. From experience I can tell you that he does a great job, the knives we got back had never been that sharp before!

You can find Mike at our first market of the season selling his green onions and radishes, the very early crops that we can grow this time of year. Mike loves to chat about his gardening so stop by to say hi to him on Saturday, May 11th, 9am to 12pm at the Emporium Town Square. Mike will be accepting FMNP checks again this season.

Emily Jordan,

Emily Jordan, passed away peacefully at her residence in Waleska, GA, on April 18, 2024, at the age of 81. Born on August 18, 1942, in Thomasville, GA, Emily’s life was a testament to her loving, kind, and thoughtful nature.

Retiring after a career as a flight attendant with Eastern Airlines, Emily’s commitment to community was equally evident through her devoted membership at the First Baptist Church of Wilmington, NC, where she volunteered with a joyful heart. Her infectious smile and caring ways were a comfort to everyone she met.

Emily’s vivacious personality shone through her love of shopping, her immense joy in volunteering, and most intimately, through the cherished moments spent with her beloved family. Emily was a die-hard Atlanta Braves fan. She’ll be remembered for her grand-slam spirit, a heart as full as the stands on game day, we imagine she’s got the best seat in the house now. To those who knew her, Emily's outgoing nature made her the heart of every gathering, leaving behind an indelible imprint of sweetness and care. Her legacy of love will forever be held dear in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to feel her touch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Bessie Washington; and brother, Louis Washington; survivors are her husband, Hugh Jordan; son, Andrew Jordan (Ashleigh); daughter, Julie Joyce (Kevin); sister, Elsie Lavinka; brother, George Washington (Wilma); four grandchildren; as well beloved as nieces, nephews and friends.

A celebration of Emily’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 3, 2024 at First Baptist Church Wilmington, 411 Market St, Wilmington, NC 28401, with Dr. Jim Everette officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to First Baptist Church Wilmington, 411 Market St, Wilmington, NC 28401.

Sosebee Funeral Home, Canton, GA is honored to serve the Jordan family. Sosebeefuneralhome.com 770-479-2131.
