You may be familiar with Dr. Seuss’ “One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish” story, but today, we’re going to talk about something a little different.
As you can see from this map, found in an acid mine drainage progress report from 1995, acid mine drainage isn’t just a problem here in Elk County. It’s crazy to think that at that time, the quality of the streams were measured by either the presence or absence of fish. While acid mine drainage issues do still exist, significant improvements have been made over the years. For example, the Bennett Branch Sinnemahoning Creek, which is indicated as having no fish on the map, has since been restored. In fact, portions of it are even stocked with trout now!
