Sylvan Heritage Council donates signs to CC Food Pantry
The Sylvan Heritage Council recently donated signs to the Cameron County Food Pantry.
These signs help alert citizens and drivers on food pantry distribution days in front of the Northern Tier Community Action building at 135 W. 4th Street.
Thanks goes out to Shirley Condon @ Art & Ink for creating these signs.

Mountain Paws Grooming & Boarding Update
We've had some really great kennel dogs so far!
I know this isn't all of them and I'm so sorry if I didn't post yours. It's like being a grandparent ...we get to love on them and snuggle with them and then they go home in a few days or weeks.
This is the best job ever!
Mountain Paws Grooming has added dog boarding to its list of services. Located on Moore Hill in Emporium, the newly built kennel has 6 indoor/outdoor runs and will be adding a few cages for smaller dogs under 20 pounds. The kennel is climate controlled with air conditioning and heaters. There are some projects still in progress like a large exercise yard and a roof over the outside runs but as it stands it's ready for boarders. Mountain Paws Grooming and Boarding is the only state inspected and licensed kennel in Cameron County, so it fills a big need in the area.
Every dog being boarded must have shot records proving that they are up to date on rabies, DHLPP and bordetella vaccines. They are also required to have a license in the county they reside in. Mountain Paws Grooming and Boarding is owned and operated by Becca and George Peters. You may also see Sami Wolfanger at the grooming shop or kennel as she is a part time employee. Four ATV Grants Awarded to 25th Senatorial District Organizations
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) this past week announced new grant funding totaling $955,500 for all-terrain vehicle (ATV) and snowmobile facilities and trails in Pennsylvania.
The investments from the ATV Management Restricted Account and Snowmobile Management Restricted Account are used to support construction or maintenance of ATV and snowmobile trails and facilities.
Of the $955,500 distributed statewide, four grant recipients are located in the 25th Senatorial District: Elk County Riders Inc. received $444,100 for development of the Byrnedale ATV Connector Trail in Jay Township, Elk County; Majestic Kamp & Lost Trails, Inc. received $203,300 for purchase of equipment to maintain and construct approximately 67 miles of ATV trails at Majestic Kamp & Lost Trails in Otto, Keating and Foster townships, McKean County; Central Mountains ATV Association Inc. got $89,200 for the purchase of equipment to maintain and construct approximately 300 miles of the Central Mountains ATV Association trail system in Cameron, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Elk, Forest, Jefferson, Lycoming, McKean, Potter, Tioga, Union and Warren counties; and the Potter County ATV UTV Club received $9,500 for the purchase of mobile youth ATV safety training equipment.
The department is allowed to award grants two times each year to municipalities and organizations (both for-profit and non-profit) for development of publicly accessible ATV and snowmobile trails and facilities, with the next grant round opening on Aug. 1 and closing on Sept. 30.
Proposed snowmobile and ATV related projects eligible for DCNR grants include: planning, land acquisition, development, rehabilitation, maintenance, purchase of equipment for maintenance and construction, and development of educational programs related to snowmobile and ATV trails and facilities.
Each of these organizations are working together to capitalize on the growing community of riders and encouraging these riders to enjoy the natural beauty we enjoy in the 25th District. People are coming from out of state to utilize the trails these organizations are setting up and maintaining. This is resulting in a growing number of people spending nights at our campgrounds and hotels and enjoying the restaurants and small businesses in our region. It’s a billion-dollar industry and we are starting to reap the benefits of it because of the work of these organizations.
No match is required for this funding, but applications providing matching funding will be given additional consideration.

Emporium Hardwoods Discontinues Cut Off Wood Pile
Due to the recent fire at Emporium Hardwoods on 7/23/22, the public will no longer be allowed on site to pick up free wood from the cut off pile.
No Trespassing signs have been put up and they are enforcing those.
The fire was started at the cutoff pile and assumed to have started from a cigarette disposed of onto/into the cutoff pile.
This message was related from the management team.

I have not heard this directly from the management at Emporium Hardwoods, but from employees that work there. Everyone in Emporium that used the wood from the cut off pile is sad about this, but understands that a fire cannot be risked there, or anywhere.

Emporium Swim Team Championships 7/30/22
CCHS School Pool
Emporium Swim Team is ready for Championships that are being held in Port Allegany Saturday.
Of our 32 swimmers/divers, we have 21 taking part in Championships.
We have 5 swimmers in the 7 and underage group and they will be warming up at 7am Saturday morning. When they are finished swimming then our 15 older swimmers and our 1 diver will hit the water. We are competing against 6 other teams that are part of the Tri-County Swim League.
It will be an exciting day!

Cameron County continues to put on one of the most spectacular firework displays in the region. But the length of the show may have to be trimmed in 2023. R&R Fireworks telling organizers that the cost to transport the fireworks increased by $30,000.00 this year. The result is passing the cost for the 2023 show on to customers like Cameron County Chamber of Commerce.
Chamber executive director Tina Johns Solak says the fireworks committee has decided it will increase fundraising efforts, so the show does not have to be scaled back. Businesses, individuals, organizations all contribute to the show each year along with the Firequacker Duck Derby and Easter Bunny Breakfast. “The committee is so thankful for the donations. Because of the anticipated increase, the public will see more fundraisers for the fireworks,” says Solak.
The first fundraiser is a donation only yard sale to be held in downtown Emporium on Saturday August 6. There will be no prices on the items only donation jars. All the funds raised will be given to the fireworks fund. The sale is set for 9 to noon in the former Dolan Hotel vacant lot

Memorial Gathering for Charles Hooftallen
Charles P. Hooftallen, 74, of St. Marys, PA, formerly of Emporium, Ulysses, and Austin, died Monday, June 20, 2022 in Penn Highlands, Dubois.
Born July 27, 1947, in Scranton, he was the son of Elias Charles and Eva M Sabetine Hooftallen, Jr. Raised in Austin, he attended Austin High School and later went on to earn his GED. He was employed by Westfield Tanning Co. and APS in St. Marys. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing canasta, watching western movies, and listening to oldies music. Chuck was a conversationalist over coffee, socializing with anyone who would listen, banter, or joke around. He loved to make people laugh and be the center of attention. He collected coins, Elvis memorabilia, Coca-Cola memorabilia, and Native American items. Chuck cherished time with his daughters and grandchildren.
Surviving are: two daughters, Evelyn (Jerry) Shrubb of Ridgway and Heather (Mark) Farren of Emporium; five grandchildren, Zoe (Jed) Haas of Emporium, Ariel Farren of Emporium, Blaine Farren of Emporium, Trisha Kossman of Port Allegany, and Terry Kossman of Emporium; his step-mother, Janis Hooftallen of Earlville, NY; ten siblings, Perry (Sue) Hooftallen of Roulette, Evelyn Sebatine of Meadville, Thomas Burgett, Sr. of Hermitage, Paul (Tammy) Burgett of Emporium, David (Carrie) Burgett of Emporium, Esther Hooftallen of Earlville, NY, Francis (Cheryle) Burgett, Jr. of North Tonawanda, NY, Robert (Bridgette) Burgett of Olean, NY, Roger (Vanessa) Burgett of Gardeau, and Dana (Alice) Burgett of Austin; nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his step-father, Francis Burgett; and four sisters, Cynthia Hooftallen, Anita Burgett Henderson, Virginia “Ginny” Burgett Gribble, and Judy Burgett Hooftallen.
A memorial gathering will be held Sunday, July 31, 2022 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM at the Cameron County Fairgrounds, Emporium.

Wild Turkey Sighting Survey
The Pennsylvania Game Commission is again seeking input from the public in surveying wild turkeys this summer, with the Pennsylvania Wild Turkey Sighting Survey open now through Aug. 31.
According to the commission, participation is important for turkey population management, with the survey data helping the agency to determine total wild turkey productivity and compare long-term reproductive success within Pennsylvania and across states. Data also are used in the turkey population model to track population trends.
Turkey sightings can be reported through the commission’s website.
On the website, participants are requested to record the number of wild turkeys they see, along with the location, date and contact information if agency biologists have any questions. Viewers can also access results from previous years.

LIFE-NWPA Senior Living Expands Reach to Cameron County
The alternative to nursing facilities is now available in 12 Counties in Northwest Pennsylvania
July 26, 2022—LIFE-NWPA announced today that it is now offering services to Cameron County. LIFE helps seniors live at home as long as possible by providing an alternative to institutional care for persons age 55 or older who require nursing facility-level care. Its mission is to prevent unnecessary nursing home admissions.
The LIFE community center, located at 103 North Front Street in Clearfield, Pa., now serves Cameron County, which includes the boroughs of Driftwood and Emporium, as well as the unincorporated community of Sinnamahoning.
"The LIFE program provides a robust level of coordinated care, including medication, medical care, mental health services, and in-home assistance,” said Richard Fish, CEO of LIFE-NWPA. “In addition, we provide most of our participants with these services at no cost to them, which means no premiums, no co-pays, no out-of-pocket costs, and no deductibles, thus providing significant peace of mind for many seniors and their families."
LIFE programs use a team approach to keep seniors with long-term care needs healthy and cared-for around the clock while living independently in their own homes. LIFE enrollees typically receive care at home and utilize a LIFE community center for socializing, medication management, physician visits, transportation to the LIFE center and other appointments, and any additional care or service needed to maintain their highest level of functioning. The interdisciplinary team interacts with seniors and their families to develop a comprehensive and organized personal care plan, schedule essential appointments, fill medicines and provide transportation to and from LIFE centers. In addition, participants enjoy hot family-style meals and recreational activities at the LIFE center, medical clinic checkups, physical therapy, and rehabilitative therapy.
With the addition of Cameron County, LIFE-NWPA serves 12 counties in Northwest Pennsylvania. Nationally known as the Program for All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), the LIFE program is centered on the belief that it is better for seniors with chronic care needs to be served in the community whenever possible. Seniors, who would otherwise be residing in a skilled nursing facility, are cared for in the comfort of their own homes with the support of the LIFE-NWPA team.

The cost for the program is based on Medicare and Medicaid eligibility. There is no cost for seniors eligible for Medicaid, or both Medicare and Medicaid.

National whistleblower and Emporium native LtCol Ted Blickwedel presents special program for veterans and families at library
The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library is excited to welcome Emporium native, whistleblower, combat veteran and retired Marine Corps LtCol Ted Blickwedel for a presentation about his book, "Broken Promises", which describes his efforts to protect quality care for veterans and the welfare of those who serve them in the VA health care system. The program will be held in the Library Multipurpose Room on Monday, August 15 from 5:30-7:30 pm. We encourage all area veterans and family members to attend.
“Broken Promises” chronicles how excessive productivity metrics levied on clinicians by VA management has compromised quality care for veterans and negatively affected counselor welfare. It also describes the unethical and vindictive retaliation Blickwedel experienced during his advocacy crusade and the traumatic impact this has had on him, his family, colleagues and veterans. Further, the book explains a federal GAO investigation he helped instigate that substantiated his allegations, which resulted in Congressional legislation to correct this injustice as a consequence of his efforts. The Veterans Administration’s current mandate focuses on the quantity of veteran clients seen versus the quality of care they receive. The effects of the mandate dramatically increased counselor workload at the expense of veterans’ mental health care, including those with PTSD.
Becoming a whistleblower, Blickwedel experienced retaliation, including gaslighting, isolation, mobbing, and false accusations. Despite this, his unwavering dedication to protect quality care for veterans has led to Congressional legislation to hold the VA leadership accountable to ensure this injustice does not continue.
Born in Emporium, Blickwedel’s family has a military history. Notably, Blickwedel is a Persian Gulf War combat veteran and his uncle, Richard Swanson, was a U.S. Army Sergeant who served in the 82nd Airborne Division during WWII. They are features together on a military banner outside of Charlie’s restaurant.
After his military service, Blickwedel was employed as a licensed clinical social worker for the Veterans Administration (VA) at the Warwick, RI VET Center from 2009 to 2018 where he conducted individual and group therapy with combat veterans.

Our workshop includes hands on field investigations, a copy of the award-winning 𝘞𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘦𝘥 𝘌𝘥𝘶𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 curriculum for your classroom, and more.
Watershed Education is an inquiry-based, interdisciplinary curriculum designed by PA DCNR, and helps educators utilize their local natural resources as valuable teaching tools. It addresses Environment and Ecology, Geography, History, STEM and other state and national standards.

CC Farmers Market Introduces Teresa Genaux from Alpaca Creations

The next vendor we would like to welcome to the market is the talented Teresa Genaux from Alpaca Creations.
Teresa is a veteran of craft shows and farmers markets in the area and has been a fountain of valuable information and advice for us as we learn and grow our market.
Teresa specialises in Alpaca wool, creating beautiful, wearable, hand-knit designs including hats, scarves, gloves and head bands. She also has a big variety of alpaca wool socks, lots of natural and hand dyed yarns of different weights, boot inserts, dryer balls and more.
T
eresa uses wool harvested from the family pack of alpacas housed and cared for by her daughter Robin Kuleck at the Little Red Barn Farm. These adorable creatures produce incredibly soft and warm wool that is a real pleasure to wear. Fun fact: alpaca wool is warmer than normal sheep’s wool because of the extra hollow space in the fiber which allows it to fill with warm air and so provides extra warmth. Trust me, you can feel the difference!
Teresa dyes her own wool, creating some stunning colours, so if you are interested in trying your hand at knitting, pick up some of her yarns, you will fall in love with their softness and warmth!
Teresa has a busy schedule, attending many markets in the area, but we are very excited to have recruited her for our August 13th market! Come and visit us at the Emporium Town Square, 9am to 1pm, to stock up for your winter projects and Christmas gifts!
