Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library
Calling All Crafters! We Need Your Help!
The library is preparing something colorfully creative for our 2025 Summer Reading Program: "Color Our World" — and we need your help to bring the magic to life!
We’re currently collecting paper towel rolls for an upcoming take-home craft project and would greatly appreciate any donations you can share. 🎨🧻
Clean, empty rolls can be dropped off at the library during regular business hours. Every roll helps us create a more colorful world for our young readers this summer! ✨
Thank you for supporting creativity, imagination, and your local library! 💛

Rotary News, Guest Speakers CC Commissioners

Emporium Rotary Club
Commissioners Jessica Herzing, Josh Zucal and James Moate were guest speakers of Rotarian John Rogers this week. The Commissioners each spoke about county concerns and how they are being addressed as well as the various projects they are working on. They also stated that each has a particular area of coverage that they handle. For instance, Commissioner Jessica Herzing has strengths in the financial end, which she elaborated on how a fiscal budget is being met and that any extra spending being used is not coming from the taxpayers but through grants. They were also able to reduce some spending by changing their payroll company for example.
Commissioner James Moate sits on multiple boards both locally and nationally and focuses primarily on technology, rural health, and arts & culture. He has been involved in discussions related to AI and broadband topics, and has also been working with Rep. Martin Causer on the EMS concerns.

Commissioner Josh Zucal is involved in the area of environmental issues such as the "Dark Skies", the Brownfields Program Grants, company searches, and noting that Cameron County is Graded 'A' in the Biomass Studies for potential electric companies and other industries to consider our town for future industrial development. These, of course, are just a few topics that the Commissioners handle daily. To learn more, visit their website www.cameroncountypa.com or follow their Facebook page Cameron County Government

Paul Miller’s Law Takes Effect June 5th

A new Pennsylvania law banning the use of handheld devices while driving takes effect on June 5.

Paul Miller’s Law limits the use of handheld cellphones or other communication devices while operating a motor vehicle. The law is named for a young man who was killed in a crash involving a distracted tractor-trailer driver in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, in 2010.

Under the law, driving while holding a mobile device is a primary violation, meaning police can pull over drivers solely for the violation. For the first 12 months, the penalty is a written warning. Effective in June 2026, the penalty is a summary offense, which carries a $50 fine, plus court costs and other fees. If a driver is convicted of homicide by vehicle and driving while distracted, they may be sentenced up to an additional five years in prison.

Drivers can still use their phones if using hands-free technology, such as a docking station, Bluetooth or speaker technology. You may also use your phone to contact emergency responders.

According to PennDOT, more than 11,000 crashes were the result of distracted driving, leading to 65 deaths and 6,700 injuries in 2023. Pennsylvania joins 28 other states with hands-free laws.

Cameron County Fireworks Blasting Off July 5

Cameron County Fireworks Blasting Off July 5

Events on Saturday July 5 are expanding with the new location for the Cameron County Fireworks. Following the vendors lining downtown Emporium the attention will turn to Smoker’s Insane Terrain Offroad Park on Sizer Run Road. The event will host a car crash and dash event from 5-7 followed by food and music until the fireworks blast off at dusk from the mountainside. The new location necessitated following Cameron County School District denying the permit to host the popular event at the football stadium due to concerns of damage to the newly reconstructed track.

Tina Solak, executive director, said neither R&R nor the chamber had any doubt that the event would take place, but following up on suggestions from the public, seeking permission from property owners and taking into account parking and visibility proved difficult. Among the locations viewed were Caldwell Corp, Big Flag Monument, Mid Cameron Authority facility, private property, CCOYA property, along with Western NY and Pennsylvania Railroad. Smokers Insane Terrain Offroad Park offers parking for more than 500 vehicles, dedicated handicap seating and since the fireworks will blast from an area 150 feet from the ground, they will soar higher than ever seen before.

Fundraising for the event is underway. Emporium Food Market is sponsoring a dog and duck lunch on Friday June 6. You may purchase a hot dog, chips and drink for $2.00. Ducks for the firequacker duck derby will be available for adoption. The adoption fee is $2.00 each or a 6-quack for $10.00. The other fundraiser is a $10.00 chance for a $1,000 gift card to Emporium Food Market. Only 300 tickets will be sold. They are available at the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce, or at the grocery store on Fridays from 11am-1pm
