Cameron County Farmers Market
We’re always excited when new growers join the market, and this new brother and sister team are a very welcome addition! Today we are introducing you to Mike Fragale and Annette Campbell, two keen gardeners that joined us for the last market in July.
Mike always had a small garden plot that supplied him and his family with a steady stream of vegetables in the summer months but when he retired in 2020 he decided to expand this substantially and now has a large garden taking up a good portion of the lawn below his house in the east end of town.
This garden is a true team effort as Mike does all the initial planting while Annette joins him to help with all the hard work that comes after; the weeding, watering and harvesting. Together they have created a beautiful garden bursting with an abundance of plants and ripening vegetables.
The majority of the plants are peppers and they grow several different varieties including sweet bell Aces, hot Infernos, spicy chili peppers and banana peppers, which can range from mild to scorching hot, the Russian roulette of peppers!
They also grow several varieties of tomato, red cabbages, cucumbers, beets, carrots, Brussel sprouts and are even successfully growing eggplants, definitely not an easy vegetable to grow so I was super impressed with that!
The lovely Annette will primarily be the one coming to the market to sell all their wonderful produce but we hope to see Mike there on occasion too, decked out in his gardening overalls and looking every inch the part of a successful farmer!
Pop by this Saturday 12 August, 9am to 12pm at the Emporium Town Square to see what delicious, freshly picked vegetables they have on offer for you!
