K9 Novak and his handler, Officer Volker Kiefer were the guest attraction at the October 8th Rotary luncheon meeting. Novak was imported from Germany and had 6 weeks of pre-training at Shallow Creek Kennels, a privately owned and operated police service dog importing and training facility in western PA. K9 Detection is using specially trained dogs to detect any kind of substance. Novak is skilled I patrol work, article finding and tracking, but the biggest reason the department obtained Novak was for his drug detection skills. Officer Kiefer demonstrated Novak’s detection abilities by placing various drugs around the room and having the dog sniff them out. So far, Novak, has been used around 5 times during suspected crimes in the area.
