Weekend in the Wilds Breaks Records

Weekend in the Wilds Breaks Records

Cameron County celebrated weekend in the wilds July 1 and 2 by breaking several records. Organizers say 900 ducks participated in the Firequacker Duck Derby held Saturday. The fundraiser is hosted by the Cameron County Fireworks committee and with the help of the Emporium Water Company, and Emporium Volunteer Fire Department North Broad Street is flooded so rubber ducks can paddle to the finish line. This year the ducks were cheered on by Susie Singer and her duck Puddles. Three Cameron County residents adopted the winning ducks. First place went to Autumn Hunt, Diana Boden captured second place and third went to Scarlett Reigle.

Chamber director Tina Solak says the duck derby was just one of the records broken. More than 50 vendors lined Fourth Street and at least 70 took to the woods to hunt for Big Foot this year. The number of hunters participating continues to grow. The event is a fundraiser for Mountaineer Search & Rescue.

The weekend kicked off with a Car Cruise sponsor Reids Auto Sales and Service and held at Emporium Food Market. It was so successful with participants and car enthusiasts that organizers say it will be a permanent event held the Friday before Weekend in the Wilds.

Emporium was the scene of two firework displays. Joe Caldwell lit up the sky Friday night and the county fireworks were held Saturday night at the high school football stadium. Both displays brought watchers from across the state.
