I have had several emails asking about the cell phone tower that has been constructed in the Southern part of Cameron County. It is located in the Whitcomb subdivision outside of Driftwood. I reached out to our County Commissioners who referred me to Adam Johnson, Director of Emergency services in Cameron County. Adam's answer is below.
This is an AT& T cellular tower. It is being constructed as part of the national FirstNet cellular service expansion. Additional information can be found here: https://www.firstnet.com/community/news/nationwide-lte-coverage-surpasses-2-61-million-square-mile.html
The tower will be for both commercial use (public) and FirstNet (emergency services) use.
Once the tower is operational, it will provide AT & T cellular service to the area covered
by the tower.
Additional towers are proposed in the area of Hicks Run Road and Quehanna.
We were originally given projected completion dates of 2nd QTR of 2020 for the Driftwood tower and 4th QTR of 2020 for Hicks Run tower; however, we believe there have been COVID-19 related delays.
