Using salt is necessary here in the PA WILDS during the winter, but it is important not to overuse it. Every year, excess salt enters waterways, harming their health. Road salt is the leading cause of chloride pollution in US waterways. It also indirectly costs the US $16-19 billion per year from corrosion, according to information from the Izaak Walton League of America.
