Kay (Swineford) Markert

 

Kay (Swineford) Markert, 86, of Huntingdon, PA since October 2018, formerly of Williamsport and Emporium, PA, passed away at 3:47 A.M. on Friday, June 9, 2023, at Penn Highlands Huntingdon. Born at home in Brookville, PA, Jefferson County, on January 2, 1937, she was a daughter of the late Allen and Beula (Anderson) Swineford. She was united in marriage to LeRoy G. Markert on July 7, 1956, at the First Methodist Church, Emporium, by the Rev. Joseph G. Rigby. Mr. Markert preceded her in death on January 31, 2019.

She is survived by a daughter, Kerri J. Brown and her husband, Kip, of Huntingdon; four grandsons; three great-granddaughters and a great-grandson. She was preceded in death by two sons in their infancy, Kirk Allen Markert and Timothy Edward Markert; and a daughter, Kathryn M. Banks. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Robert Swineford; and a sister, Joan (Swineford) Aiello.

Mrs. Markert was a member of the Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church in Williamsport.

She was a 1955 graduate of Cameron County High School in Emporium.

Mrs. Markert was employed by the former GTE Sylvania, Emporium, for approximately 15 years until 1975. She then became employed at Johnson Auto Sales as a clerk/typist and also at Widman’s Drug Store, both of Emporium. She subsequently worked as a clerk at Wert’s News & Gifts in Emporium, and later worked at Nichol’s Department Store in Williamsport where she retired.

She was an active volunteer with the American Cancer Society in Emporium, having served as President from 1978-1980 and Unit Executive from 1980-1982. She also volunteered at the Cancer Ward at the Divine Providence Hospital in Williamsport and previously served as a Girl Scout Leader in Emporium. Her hobbies included roller skating, bowling, sewing, needlework and painting.

At the request of Mrs. Markert there will be no public viewing. A celebration of life service to be held at the Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church is being planned and will be announced at a later date. Private interment will be in the Newton Cemetery, Emporium, at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in remembrance of Mrs. Markert may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or the American Cancer Society, or the American Heart Association, or the Make-A-Wish Foundation, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
