CC Farmers Market Introduces Dylan & Ashley Major of D's Queen Bees

Cameron County Farmers Market

Today I would like to introduce you to a lovely couple of entrepreneurial bee keeping, honey makers from Port Allegany, Dylan & Ashley Major of D's Queen Bees! Dylan has been growing his apiary for the last 7 years and now has 180 hives, each with an average of 60,000 bees living and working in them. That's a lot of bees! In these times when bee numbers are struggling this is an incredibly commendable achievement. For now this has just been a hobby for him but he would like to see his business grow to the point where he can make it his full time gig.

I was lucky enough to visit one of their bee yards and got a fascinating introduction to the art of beekeeping. Did you know that the queen bee (who only becomes the queen through a strict and exclusive diet of royal jelly) lays up to 2,000 eggs a day? I got to see one of the bees hatching and learned that these female worker bees go through three jobs in their short 6 week lifespan. When they first hatch they act as nursemaids to the still unhatched larvae, then they act as guards for the hive before assuming the role of foragers. No doubt where the term "busy bees" comes from!

From all this hard work, honey is produced and Dylan bottles this delicious nectar and will be selling it at our market, lucky us! Ashley has been equally busy, setting up her own line of bees wax products. She has created a variety of soaps, candles, lip balms and wax melts that look and smell delicious! We are so excited to have them join us at the market and can't wait for you to try their home-made, honey products! Our first market day is coming up fast, Saturday 9 July, at the Emporium Town Square, 9am to 1pm. Hope to see you all there! Welcome to our farmers market, Dylan & Ashley!

What is the Cameron County Farmers Market?
