Floyd L. “Ernie” Pyle, Jr., passed away Sunday (Feb. 13, 2022) peacefully in his home, surrounded by family.
Born November 9, 1932, in Wilkinsburg, PA, he was a son of Floyd L. and Nevada R. Rush Pyle. On June 29, 1956, in Oakmont, PA, he married Diane Gildersleeve, who survives. They were married 65 years.
Floyd worked in forestry with the Bureau of Forestry, park ranger with Dept. of Environmental Resources and Penn. State Parks, and law enforcement, before his retirement.
Floyd was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening.
Korean War Veteran
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the US Army 10th Special Forces, Green Beret, from Oct. 1952-Oct. 1955.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Diane, are three daughters, Amy (Ronald) Mickle of Port Allegany, Julie Childs of Lancaster, PA, Molly (Patrick) Heraty of Green Castle, PA; 6 grandchildren: Brian (Ellen) Mickle and Kyley (Mike) Anderson, Juanita and Donald Childs, Madeline (Brian) Brook, and Sean Heraty; two great-grandchildren: Otto Mickle and Micah Brook; and a brother, Douglas L. Pyle of Frankfort, KY.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Carolyn Edsall.
At Floyd’s request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A celebration of life will be held at a later time & place to be announced.
Memorials can be made to Gatehouse Hospice of Williamsport, PA, or Penn Highlands Hospice of St. Mary’s, PA.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany.
