Rotarian, Rhonda Brown, Woodland Elementary School Counselor, spoke at the Rotary luncheon meeting July 7th regarding the elementary Backpack Program.
For many students, school lunch on Friday is the last meal they will receive until they return to school on Monday morning. The program started in 2019 with food donated by Second Harvest distributed out of Erie, PA. Criteria for the program are students eligible for free or reduced lunches, which are 64% of the children at Woodland Elementary. Food is distributed on Fridays with each eligible child receiving a bag of food which include many food items the children are able to prepare themselves. Menus differ throughout the month, and many regulations are placed on the food and privacy of the students. Currently 50 students were served each week last school year and the school hopes to expand the program this coming year. They are currently funded for the next 3 years by generous donations from the Mee & Emporium Foundations.
