Rotarian, Georgiann Holly, introduced guest speaker, Dr. Hoff, at the March 10th Rotary luncheon meeting. Dr. Hoff is a staff member and Director of the Trauma Program Development at Penn Highlands Healthcare in Dubois. His topic was Improving Trauma Care In Rural PA and Penn Highlands Dubois Hospital’s pursuit of a Level 2 Trauma Center. Trauma refers to a serious or critical bodily injury. Approximately 20% of population reside in rural communities and have 50% of trauma deaths. Statistics show that 50% die immediately, 20% die 10-days to 2 weeks from complication and 30% if receiving the appropriate treatment, will live.
Penn Highlands Dubois has started the process to make their facility a Level 2 trauma center with the PA Trauma Systems Foundation which accredits trauma centers. Once they are accredited, they will be able to provide a full range of care for severely injured patients, many of whom are now transported to Altoona or Pittsburgh.
