Can you recall eating your last hydroponic pepper or cucumber?
Thats a question the Cameron County 5th grade Science class can answer. Over the past ten years, Mrs. Ream has introduced her 5th grade students to the science of hydroponics, a method of growing plants without soil.
The students start the seeds in early December, and over the next 3-4 months the plants will continue to grow. The students add the required nutrients that the plants would normally get from the soil by dissolving the nutrients in the water. The students also monitor that nutrient level, pH level, and water temp, all factors that affect plant growth. The plants shown in the above photo should be ready for the dinner table in about a month.
