Rose M. Callahan, 87, a resident of Oak Ridge Personal Care Home in Mill Hall for the past two years, formerly of Driftwood, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, in Jersey Shore Hospital, Jersey Shore.
Born December 31, 1923 in Force, she was the daughter of Anthony and Mary Ripko Asalone. On July 7, 1943 in Emporium she married George A. Callahan who died August 11, 1995.
A resident of Driftwood since 1949, Mrs. Callahan was a 1941 graduate of Penfield High School. She was employed for a few years by GTE Sylvania in Emporium and with her husband owned and operated Callahan’s Grocery in Driftwood for 42 years before retiring in 1989.
Mrs. Callahan was a member of St. James Church in Driftwood and for many years maintained the building, decorated, and performed altar duties as well. She was a past member of the Bucktail Volunteer Fire Department in Driftwood, a 20 year member of the Board of Directors of Citizens Bank & Trust Company in Emporium, and was one of the original members of the Sinnemahoning Sportsmans Club.
She is survived by: one son, Jerry (Kathy) Callahan of Springfield; one daughter, Candace (Steve) Murray of Lock Haven; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; two brothers, Anthony Asalone of Penfield and Ralph (Charlotte) Asalone of Salisbury, MD; three sisters, Elizabeth (Angelo) Carmella of DuBois, Helen (Vincent) Caporale of Milton, NY, and Margaret Hudsick of Yuma, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Callahan was predeceased by one sister Teresa Rollyson in 1989.
Friends will be received in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, Monday, April 25 from 4-7 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mark Church with Fr. Paul Siebert, pastor, as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mark Cemetery, Emporium.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Sinnamahoning Volunteer Fire Department
