Edward L. Horning




Edward L. Horning, Sr., 82, of Midland Rd., Emporium, died Thursday, November 4, 2010, in Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys.

Born May 16, 1928 in Emporium, he was the son of the late Byron H. Horning, Sr. and Lola Schwab Horning.

On April 30, 1949 in Emporium, he married Harriet Kennedy who died May 3, 2000. On December 27, 2005 in Emporium, he married Jane Mullens who survives.

A lifelong resident of Emporium, Mr. Horning was a 1946 graduate of Emporium High School. From 1959 until 1973 he operated the Esso station on West Fourth Street in Emporium. He then opened Ed Horning’s Fuel Oil in Emporium and in the following years was also awarded many trash removal contracts in the surrounding townships. In 1994 he opened Store All Rentals in Emporium and for many years was employed as a school bus driver for the Cameron County School District. Mr. Horning also served as Cameron County commissioner for four years.

Mr. Horning was a member of the First Baptist Church in Emporium where he was a former deacon. He was a member of Emporium Lodge 382 F&AM, the local ATV Association, Bucktail Rod & Gun Club, and was a long time member and past president of the Tom Mix Rangers. He was also a former 4-H Leader and for years was the Chamber Santa making annual visits to the Guy & Mary Felt Manor. His passions were his family, four-wheeling and hunting.

Surviving in addition to his wife Jane and his loving dog, Duchess, are: five sons, Rick Horning and Chris (Annetta) Horning both of Emporium, Edward (Lyn) Horning of Bellefonte, John Horning of Mansfield and Larry (Beth) Horning of Ridgway; one daughter, Deborah (Roger) Long of Galeton; twelve grandchildren; one great granddaughter; one brother, Byron Horning of Emporium; and also nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium, Sunday, November 7 from 3-5 p.m. at which time a Masonic Memorial Service will be held. Funeral & Committal Services will follow with the Rev. Russell Horning of Shinglehouse, officiating.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Cameron County High School Alumni Association Harriet and Edward Horning Scholarship Fund c/o Northwest Savings Bank, 2 East Fourth Street, Emporium.
