Vector-Borne Disease Survey

The Penn State Extension office is looking for input on tick borne illnesses.
 Please consider taking the survey.

As part of the vector-borne disease team program development, we have launched a survey through Qualtrics to try to get an idea of the current knowledge of citizens of the commonwealth on ticks, tick-borne disease, and tick bite prevention and control. More information on the team and the survey can be found in the write up in Penn State News.

We are trying to get as wide a distribution as possible and to get responses from a range of demographics and interests. If you have a moment, we would appreciate your responses and if you have any groups or organizations that you work within PA (professionally or personally), we would certainly appreciate your forwarding this as well.

You can access the survey here. https://pennstate.qualtrics.com

Please keep in mind this survey is limited to folks over 18 and those currently residing in Pennsylvania.

Thank you

Pic of the Day

The first caterpillar I've seen this year.
Old tales say the woolly bear caterpillar can predict the severity of the winter by the length of the red-orange band at the center of its body. The more red-orange there is, the warmer the winter and the less red-orange, the colder and snowy the winter will be. I'm happy to see alot of red-orange on
this one.

Local Author to Discuss New Novel Set in Sinnemahoning Area

Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library Welcomes Local Author to Discuss His New Novel Set in Sinnemahoning Area

EMPORIUM -- The Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library is pleased to welcome area author P.J. Piccirillo on Monday evening, October 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. for a book signing and Q&A session about his latest title, “The Indigo Scarf”, a work of historical fiction set in the Sinnemahoning area. Piccirillo notes that the book has been heavily researched over the years, and encourages anyone planning to attend the event to read the book ahead of time so he can better address any questions readers may have regarding accuracy and methodology. The book is currently available to loan at the library and will also be available for sale at the front desk leading up to the event. For questions regarding the event, please contact the library at 814-486-8011 or find us on Facebook! New novel addresses the historical legacy of slavery — “A wonderful tale with glimpses of classics like Gone With The Wind, Roots, and ... Amistad.” — Ken Bangs, author of Guardians In Blue

ABOUT THE BOOK: In 1882, Anna Maria Sharpe is departing from Washington’s Baltimore and Potomac Railroad station for the north-central Pennsylvania backwoods she’d fled in her teens doubtful of her identity. She encounters Benjamin James, a drifting, alcoholic longshoreman who’d been implicated in the murder of his brother during Anna Maria’s childhood. Benjamin decides to join her. Along the way, he relates the tale of the ancestors of their sordid hideaway settlement: his father, the infamous ex-slave Jedediah James; George Sharpe, a former indentured grist-miller whom Anna Maria believes was her grandfather; and Sarah Starret and Rosanna Wheler, the white women they had escaped with to the wild Sinnemahone country. Through the story, Anna Maria discovers an intimate connection to the man Benjamin had been accused of murdering, and to the murderer.

Benjamin’s account of the life of Jedediah James reveals a fatal obsession with ownership driving this freed slave toward his reckoning. Clandestine Quakers and a sympathetic prothonotary try to help James as hostilities build to a head between him and the august revolutionary war veteran Samson Starret and Thomas Tillman, a man fixated on a woman an ex-slave threatens to steal from him on the eve of his possessing her. The scenes of The Indigo Scarf take the reader from a forbidden slave marriage on a plantation in Virginia’s tidewater region to the tragic end of a whiskey and timber-pirating operation on the Susquehanna’s un-peopled and feral West Branch during the frontier decades after Pennsylvania’s last Indian purchase.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: PJ Piccirillo is an award-winning author and literary artist-in-residence for the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. A two-time winner of the Appalachian Writers Association Harriette Arnow Award for the Short Story, PJ’s fiction and articles have appeared in journals, magazines, newspapers, and syndicates. Much of PJ’s work is set in northcentral Pennsylvania.

Jesse Szemes is fighting for his life. In early September, he was admitted to the ICU after two weeks of illness. At that time, Jesse was diagnosed with acute liver and kidney failure. The diagnosis came as a shock for Jesse and his family. Doctors say a liver transplant is critical. Before Jesse can receive a transplant, his transplant center is requiring him to raise funds. It is a very critical time for Jesse, as his health continues to decline while he’s in ICU, and he can’t even be added to the transplant waiting list until funds have been raised.....

Fall Ladies Conference

All area women are invited to the Fall Ladies’ Conference, “Beautiful Posture”, on Saturday, September 21st, from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Emporium Alliance Church on Sizerville Road. As always, the annual event will include worship, speakers, and special music. Refreshments and luncheon will be provided.

Spokesperson Deb Eckenroth noted, “The half-day structure of these conferences is designed for busy women and/or women who drive a long distance. And the Presence of God is unmistakable throughout the morning. Jesus is incomparably magnetic and compelling, liberating and purifying, strengthening and transformational. Ladies conclude the morning saying it was so worth every effort they made to get there.”

One of the primary speakers for this fall’s conference will be Jessica Pappas of Amherst, NY., who is described by Eckenroth in this manner: “Jess is an articulate, dynamic speaker who holds hearts and minds in a riveting way when she talks of Jesus and shares from the Word of God.” “We’re also fortunate to have Heather Glogau (Kane) leading worship. Heather is the perfect person for the role because she is herself, first and foremost, a true worshiper.” Special music will be provided by Amy Reed (Ulysses) whose unique gifting in songwriting is well known to previous conference attendees. “Amy has composed a song specifically for this fall’s event and women will be astounded that she is still only locally known for her songwriting.” Other speakers will also be participating.

There is no conference or luncheon cost, but any free-will donation will go directly to the poor in Haiti to meet basic needs for food, clean water, and medical care. Ladies’ conference donations have also paid for children’s school attendance and for small, start-up businesses in Haiti.

“Part of the beauty of these mornings”, said Eckenroth, “is the diversity of faith backgrounds, worship traditions, age, and experiences of the women who attend – and the fact that God speaks to each of us at the place where we are. The morning isn’t only for women of faith, but definitely for those who might be questioning and searching. All are warmly invited.” For more information, Deb can be contacted at 814-486-3375. No reservations are required.
