IRS seeks volunteers for free tax help programs in Cameron County

PITTSBURGH – The Internal Revenue Service seeks local volunteers to assist low-income families and individuals as well as seniors to file their 2016 tax returns and claim qualifying, valuable tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Child Tax Credit (CTC). The Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) program offers free tax preparation and filing services to taxpayers with low- to moderate-level incomes, with a focus on seniors. AARP’s Tax-Aide program is the IRS’s major partner for its TCE program, both locally and nationwide.

Most volunteer tax preparation sites will operate from mid-January through mid-April 2016. Some sites will remain open beyond the April 18, 2016 tax return filing deadline.

Volunteers join a program that has helped millions of people file tax returns at no charge for more than 40 years. No experience is required. Volunteers receive training on income tax preparation from IRS-certified instructors or via online courses. Volunteers are certified upon successful completion of the required training.

“TCE volunteers are friends and neighbors helping friends and neighbors in Cameron County and across the state and nation,” said Jennifer Jenkins, IRS spokesperson for Pennsylvania. “We’re fortunate to have dedicated volunteers with partner organizations who come back year after year to support local TCE programs. Each year, though, we lose some volunteers to relocation, medical or other reasons. Sustaining 2015 volunteer levels would be great, but it would be even better if in 2016 the volunteer levels and number of taxpayers helped could grow.”

To become a TCE volunteer or to find out more, visit IRS.gov and type "tax volunteer" in the search box. Prospective AARP Tax-Aide program volunteers in Cameron County and elsewhere can get more information on the AARP website at http://www.aarp.org/money/taxes/info-2006/volunteer_aarp_tax_aide.html.

Cameron County Conservation District Project Tour 2015

Cameron County Conservation District Project Tour 2015

Friday, October 23, 2015, the Cameron County Conservation District host their annual project tour. District staff were joined by all ages, even a four legged friend joined in the festivities. The tour was led by Watershed Specialist, Todd Deluccia, who spear headed most of this year tour stops. First up was the May Hollow 49 – Acid Mine Reclamation project, funded by the Sinnemahoning Watershed Grant Program through the Fish and Boat Commission and the Sinnemmahoning Stakeholders Committee. The total project cost was $270,000, which cost design, permitting and the installation of two vertical flow wetlands for treatment and a surface flow wetland as a polishing pond. This location was the largest source of acid mine drainage pollution entering into the May Hollow drainage based on flows, pH, and metal levels.

The second stop on the tour was at the Moateville Streambank Stabilization project, the site was in 2014 after a few different design tries. The final installation includes a 500 foot crib wall, encompassing over 140 logs, 63 loads of stone and nearly a half mile of rebar. This site has now been overtopped with water on serval occasions and has held up beautifully. This project was funded by the Sinnemahoning Stakeholders Committee, with a cost of approximately $40,000.

The third project, highlighted the Portage Creek Pool Habitat Initiative. The Fish and Boat Commission has identified that Sinnemahoning Portage Creek severely lacks pool habitat in its lower reaches. The District received a grant from Sinnemahoning Stakeholders Committee in the amount of $22,500 to construct six log cross vanes in Portage Creek. Two sites were completed in 2015, both of these are very large crossvanes probably the largest log crossvanes ever built. These structures provide protection from erosion on both sides of the creek and funnel water thru the center of the structure providing a large scour hole for habitat. Each of these structures cost roughly $3,500. A traditional stone crossvane of this size would cost between $10,000 and $20,000. Four more structures will be installed in 2016.

The final stop of the day was along the Gary Dubler Nature Trail. This site is a great demonstration of the how important partnership is to our local community. The District, Cameron County Outdoor Youth Activity (CCOYA), and Cameron County School District, partnered to create the Gary Dubler Nature Trail. At the trail head there are steps that have been built up and over the levee to the stream. A 20’ X 30’ pavilion was recently constructed by On The Level, so that the school may have an outdoor classroom. Students from the wood shop class have built wooden picnic tables for the pavilion as well. Funding has also been secured to install interpretive signage along the trail. These signs have been designed and are currently at the printers being made. Signs are both nature and history based. The total cost of this project is approximately $30,000. Other partners for this site include the Bucktail Watershed Association and Lumber Heritage.

The District would like to thank all the tour participants for joining them for a beautiful afternoon, touring the county to visit just a few of the District’s recent projects. District staff is already gearing up for projects in 2016, so keep a look out of staff in the field, in the stream and in the schools. For more information about the Conservation District visit their website at www.cameroncd.org or follow them on Facebook “Cameron County Conservation District”.

Historical Walk through the Calder Brick Works

Cameron County Historical Society is hosting a Historical Walk through the Calder Brick Works on Saturday, October 31, 2015.

Steve Vaneerden, property owner and history buff, will guide the tour through the remains of what once was a thriving industrial community. Scattered bricks and some subtle evidence of the booming town still remain. Calder had 12-15 houses, a school, a post office, a boarding house, an office and several plant buildings. On May of 1896, bricks began production from clay that came from Dent's Run. The Calder Brick Works bricks were used for the first paved street in Emporium, though only a portion of 4th Street. Other large contracts kept the brick works booming for many years. The brick works closed about 1919. Local history and nature lovers are invited to tour the area where the Calder brick Works once maintained a community all of its own.

The hike should last approximately 2 hours. There will be some steep slopes, muddy and some uneven or rough terrain so appropriate attire, sturdy shoes and insect repellant is suggested.

Cancellation, if required due to inclement weather, will be announced on WLEM radio. All interested hikers will meet at the Cameron pull-off (by Hunt's Run) at 10am for instructions and potential car pooling. This no-cost hike is sponsored by Cameron County Historical Society and is open the the public.

Free Workshops To Be Held For Artisans,Entrepreneurs

Free workshops held for artisans, entrepreneurs looking to join the PA Wilds Artisan Trail, use “Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds” brand

October 16, 2015 – The PA Wilds Artisan Trail, in concert with the Pennsylvania Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau and the Clarion Chamber, will be holding free “Make the Brand Work for You” workshop in Clinton County Wednesday, October 21 for small batch producers, independent retailers, artisans and other creative entrepreneurs looking to learn more about joining the Artisan Trail and using the “Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds” brand and networks to grow their operations.

The workshop will be held at the Station Gallery Lock Haven Wednesday October 21 at 6pm. The workshop and Q&A will run one hour, with refreshments provided. Workshops will provide background about the Artisan Trail program, benefits to joining, costs and the process for applying to the juried program.

Since its inception in 2006, the Pennsylvania Wilds Artisan Trail has proven to raise the visibility and profitability of artisans and arts-related businesses in the PA Wilds by increasing sales of high-quality products made by local artisans and traffic to local galleries and retail shops.

The Artisan Trail has recently gone through several expansions allowing new types of businesses to join. On major new development is that the Trail is now inviting small batch craft ag and food producers to join the Trail and use the ‘Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds’ brand.

“We’d love to see the ‘Proudly Made in the Pennsylvania Wilds’ stamp on our region’s syrups, jellies, leek dips and other small batch products that reflect our rural traditions,” said Tataboline Enos, Executive Director of the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship, the regional non-profit that operates the Artisan Trail program.

“We’ve tried to keep the program very affordable, from $25 a year for our smallest artisan producers to $150 for our larger ones. We do this because we are working to build our regional brand and we know no one can influence it the way our artisans and creative entrepreneurs can. The Artisan Trail is working to grow this cottage industry. We have so much talent in this region, it is incredible.” To date, more than 150 artisans and retailers across the region participate in the PA Wilds Artisan Trail. Organizers hope to double that over the next few years. PA DCED, PA DCNR, the Appalachian

Like the United Way, your contributions to several organizations can be made with just one contribution to the Community Chest Fund Drive. Contributions to the drive benefit: the Recreation Board, Community Nurses, Red Cross, the Summer Reading Program, the Package Team and the Garden Club. These organizations serve Cameron County and help make Cameron County a better place to live.

Each year the Cameron County Community Chest Board of Directors, a group of volunteers, meets to review requests and to establish the Community’s Goal. This year the goal is $20,200.

The Campaign runs all year round with an emphasis on the campaign between October 1 and December 31. Please consider a contribution to theses Community worthy organizations.

The Cameron County Community Chest Board of Directors would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the individuals, clubs and businesses that donated time, money and services to the 2015 Fund Drive. This was the sixth year that we have reached (exceeded) our goal since 2004.

Family, Friends remember Hannah Lewis

MCCONNELSVILLE — Small bunches of people stood in circles outside Matheney Funeral Home in McConnelsville as a line of mourners stretched an entire block of Kennebec Avenue.

They were trading stories of Hannah L. Lewis and Donnie J. Perry, two Morgan High School students who died in a Friday crash on Ohio 37 outside Malta. The visitation Tuesday night to celebrate Hannah's life continued what has already been a long and difficult week of remembrance and grief for the community.

Ameila Bartimus, a sophomore at Morgan High School, with tears welling in her eyes, stood on her tiptoes to look over the shoulder of her friend, sophomore Shaylyn Pierce. After contemplating how to best remember the legacy of Hannah and Donnie, whose names now and perhaps forever will go hand in hand, she settled on an answer.

"Just always bring up good memories of them," Ameila said as the tears let go of her eyelids to tumble down her cheeks. "They were never sad. They were always happy together."

Those good memories made lasting impressions on the hordes of people gathered to pay their final respects to Hannah.

Hannah, 16, played trumpet in the marching and concert bands at Morgan. Her friends said she cheered and played softball. But even more so than what Hannah did, friends identified with who she was.

"When you were around her, she was just always happy," Shaylyn said.

Friends described her as happy, loving and positive above all. She brought an infectious energy and spirit to whatever she did, they said.

Sophomore Alexus Masterson said the band largely contributed to Hannah's affable personality and cheerfulness.

"The band was really big in that," Alexus said. "They're like a big family. This has only brought them (the band) closer together."

Although the absence of Hannah's optimism was detectable in the lines of visitors with tears in their eyes, arms wrapped around shoulders, inching forward onto the shaded porch outside the funeral home, it maintained its presence in the stories shared by loved ones.

Morgan students — those who knew Hannah and those who didn't — as well as friends and family members laughed almost as much as they cried. They embraced in parking lots at the funeral home and on nearby streets, allowing happy memories to navigate their way to the forefront.

The case was the same at school, where Alexus said the hallways were silent when students returned to school Monday.

"It was like you go in and you know that something's wrong, something's missing," she said.

Living in the wake of tragedy was unfamiliar to them.

"It hits you when you go into class and see an empty desk in front of you," Shaylyn said.

But the support of the McConnelsville community, student body and school staff has been unparalleled, she said, making maintaining the memories of Hannah and Donnie much easier while coping with the sorrow of losing them.

"When you're a small town, you're all a team," Shaylyn said.

Drone Guys Target Emporium

If you see something flying overhead in Emporium next week most likely it is a drone.

Drone Guys have targeted the PA Wilds for documentation. Jim Temoshenko and Chad Raugh from Mount Jewett will be at the controls.

The company has flown over St Marys, DuBois and other cities in the region and will post the Emporium video on the web site: droneguyspa.com.

Shop Local Made Easier

The words are bantered about “shop local”, but why and how?

The why is because local merchants make donations to local organizations. Dealing with an out of town owner is often difficult to reach and corporate policy sometimes places restrictions. For every dollar spent at a local hardware, grocery, or retail shop 45 cents comes back to the community.
Purchase it elsewhere and 15 cents comes back, and if you purchase online, no money comes back locally.

The how just got easier. Saturday November 28 is Shop Small Saturday.

A number of retail shops will participate hosting special sales and activities. To help you pick out the perfect gift, the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce web site at www.cameroncountychamber.org is offering a gift buying section.
Each week gifts made by artists in the region will be featured. They can be purchased using the online store, or reserved with a phone call for pick up.
This season shop local and keep the money local.

Firequacker Duck Derby Ready for First Fork Festival

A major fundraiser for the fireworks that light up the sky in Cameron County set for Saturday October 10 in conjunction with the First Fork Festival at Sinnemahoning State Park. The Firequacker Duck Derby will be held at Forty Maples Day Use Area starting at 1:30 Saturday. “All of the events coordinated by the chamber of commerce benefit all residents of Cameron County, but most of those activities take place in Emporium,” explained Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Johns Solak.

“In 2014 the race was moved to Sinnemahoning and we had the largest turnout for the event entering its fourth year,” Solak continued. More than 500 ducks have been adopted and will paddle down the First Fork. The first, second and third place finishers will earn their adopted trainers cash prizes.

Ducks can be adopted in Emporium until noon on Friday at the following locations: L&M Lumber, Reids Hometown Napa and the chamber of commerce office. At the First Fork Festival ducks will be available until noon Saturday at the fireworks stand where hot sausage, kraut and plain hotdogs plus soup will be sold.

This year Seneca Resources will match dollar for dollar the amount of money raised through the Firequacker Duck Derby.
The fireworks will blast off Saturday, July 2 from the Cameron County High School.
