Cameron County Canoe and Kayak Classic To Return in 2019

Cameron County Canoe and Kayak Classic To Return in 2019

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce spearheading a committee to continue the canoe race that has brought paddlers from across the United States to the region the first Saturday in April. A dozen individuals recently met with Randy Bailey to coordinate the transition.

The canoe and kayak race is just one spoke in a wheel to promote Cameron County as the destination for outdoor recreation. Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Tina Johns Solak explains that a Sinnemahone Triple Crown is planned for 2019. The Sinnemahone Paddle will kick things off April 6, 2019. The second leg of the triple crown is a mountain bike race. “Currently DCNR Elk State Forest representatives and members of the committee are discussing the 20 mile course,” says Johns Solak. The target month is August for that race. The final piece of the triple crown is the Sinnemahone Ultra Trail Run in October. Participants that complete all three jewels of the triple crown in the calendar year will receive a unique award.

Organizers say by placing all three events under one umbrella committee duplication of social media, web, registration and insurance can be accomplished efficiently. The group is seeking individuals interested in all three events or has a passion for one of the events to contact the chamber to be involved. Sub-committees include: sponsorship, course, awards, media, emergency responders, registration and timing.

Lost Gold in Dent Run

The Mt Zion Historical Society sums up the recent FBI search for the lost gold near Dents Run.

On March 16th a large group of FBI agents descended on the village of Dents Run to conduct a court authorized excavation on a nearby mountain top in search of a lost Civil War Gold Shipment. While this search was in progress numerous news media contacted the Mt. Zion Historical Society seeking information on the “Lost Gold Shipment. Including those Contacting the Society was the DuBois Courier, CNN, New York Times, Coin Magazine, a Canadian Radio Station, and a newspaper published in London, England. Several days following the excavation, the FBI issued a news release that the search was unsuccessful.

The “LOST GOLD” shipment was supposedly lost in June of 1863. The Union was endeavoring to ship this gold from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia and routed the shipment north to avoid Confederate Calvary canvassing the area between Chancellorsville, and the southern part of Pennsylvania. The decision was made to ship the gold up the Allegany River, find the head waters of the Susquehanna River, and on into Philadelphia. According to legend there were 52 bars of gold each weighting 50 pounds each lost somewhere between Goetz’s Summit and confluence of either Dents or Hicks Run into the Bennett’s Branch.

There are many undocumented stories connected to this story. One such story claims that shortly following this shipment the locals found several US branded mules. Another story was that a man came wandering into the town of Benezett claiming to be a member of wagon train and died shortly thereafter.

Another undocumented story claiming that years following the shipment, two Pickerington agents were assigned to look for the lost shipment. It is further claimed the agents found three and 0ne-half bars of gold, and in their retirement came to live in Benezett spending their retirement looking for the gold.

Although there are many undocumented stories related to this lost gold shipment, the fact that the FBI has made a serious effort to recover this shipment, would lend creditability there is a lost gold shipment somewhere in Jay or Benezette Township. Following the FBI’s gold searching operation, there was a news release stating that their search was unsuccessful. There were literally hundreds of people over the years looking for this lost bonanza and the search continues. Although the FBI may be disappointed in not finding the gold, there are many of those who have been involved in looking for the gold who are most relieved that the gold was not found. a bit relived that the gold was not found.

Save the Date for Ulysses S. Grant

Coming from the Philadelphia area Dr. Kahan is a well-known and respected authority on the history; of American corrections, American diplomacy; cultural history, education and history of Pennsylvania will present a history of the politics of Reconstruction in a changing America.

In The Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant: Preserving the Civil War’s Legacy, historian Paul Kahan focuses on the unique political, economic, and cultural forces unleashed by the Civil War and how Grant addressed these issues during his tumultuous two terms as chief executive. A timely reassessment, The Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant sheds new light on the business of politics in the decade after the Civil War and portrays an energetic and even progressive executive whose legacy has been overshadowed by both his wartime service and his administration’s many scandals.

During Grants first term as U.S. President would come to our area just to go fishing. Grants train pulling into the siding, with Mix and Dents Runs as his destination for fishing. It is said that that both runs were teeming with brook trout, even though they didn't stock trout nor a limit in those days. Sounds like heaven.

In "The Story of the Sinnamahone" George W. Huntley said that they succeeded in catching several hundred of the "Speckled Beauties." Plus Grant enjoyed meeting with the local people and would spend all his non fishing hours sitting on the platform of his train car smoking cigars and just greeting the people, many of who were veterans of the war.

A Q&A will follow. Don't let this occasion pass you by!

Refreshments will be available.

EVERYONE is welcome you can RSVP by calling 814-486-4314.

Caught in the Act

With spring right around the corner ( really?) you may want to keep a close watch on your bird feeders. Bears are fond of black-oil sunflower seeds or any type of seeds that may be in a bird feeder.I caught this bear enjoying a snack but he didn't stay around too long once I started taking photos. I think he looks a little guilty in the last photo!

The PA Wilds Center and our partners are humbled to recognize Jan Hampton with a posthumous Member of the Year Award. Jan was a tireless and upbeat advocate for conservation and youth outreach, working for 23 years in the Cameron County School District, and serving for 18 years as the Cameron County Conservation District manager. Jan was a former chair of the Pennsylvania Wilds Planning Team, and endeared so many with her testimonial that "The Pennsylvania Wilds is a gentle sharing of the things we hold most dear." During her time as Conservation District Manager, Jan expanded both environmental stewardship programs and staff. Her youth outreach was also significant; small steps of teaching in classrooms about birds, bats, elk and of course, frogs, paved the way for more advanced activities we have today, such as the Wild About Nature Field Day, The Wild Envirothon and Trout in the Classroom. In 2017, the Cameron County fair hosted a Jan Hampton Youth Conservation Night in her memory. Her great love for the outdoors, conservation stewardship and youth education made a lasting, multi-generational impact on the region. A great singer - Jan once broke out into song, unscripted, at one of our awards dinners! Jan Hampton’s enthusiasm, friendship, sense of humor and leadership are missed, and we are grateful to honor her legacy with the Member of the Year Award for 2018.

Dr. Maurus “Moose” L. Sorg

Dr. Maurus “Moose” L. Sorg, MD, MPH, 65, of 316 West Theresia Road, St. Marys, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018, at his cabin in McKean County as a result of an accident.

He was born on May 4, 1952 in St. Marys, son of the late Leonard Sorg and Rita Krellner Sorg. He was a lifelong resident of the area and was a graduate of Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1970.

Dr. Sorg graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, summa cum laude. He earned his Doctor of Medicine from Penn State Hershey Medical School, where he met his wife of 39 years, Dr. Rosemaria Cienciva. He completed his internship at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Dayton, OH and his family practice residency at Williamsport Hospital in Williamsport, PA. Dr. Sorg was board certified in Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine, was certified in Sports Medicine, had a Master’s Degree in Public Health, and was a certified life coach. He was the Medical Director of the local hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation and occupational health departments and a former Medical Director of Pinecrest Manor. He practiced medicine in the community for over 35 years.

Dr. Sorg is survived by his wife, Rosemaria; by his daughters, Sarah Sorg and her husband Brian Muth of Silver Spring, MD, Rebecca Sorg and her fiancé George Dobson of St. Marys, and Rachael Sorg and her husband Edward Kaiser of Westbury, NY; and by four grandchildren, Nathan Muth, Eliana Muth, Bryson Myers, and Gianna Dobson. He is also survived by five sisters, Rose Mary Quinnan and her husband Steve of Roanoke, VA, Ruth Sorg of Collegeville, PA, Marian “Mamie” Sorg-Steimling and her husband Michael Steimling of Mifflinburg, PA, Anne Pistner and her husband Donald of St. Marys, and Amy Bencic of Homer City, PA; two brothers, David Sorg and his wife Ann, and Daniel Sorg, both of St. Marys; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Sorg was preceded in death by a brother, Timothy Sorg, a brother-in-law, John Bencic, and a sister-in-law, Sharon Vollmer Sorg.

Dr. Sorg was a very active and devoted member of the community. He was a member of the Queen of the World Church. He served on the Board of Directors at Elcam and the West Creek Rails-to-Trails. He was a pilot and served on the St. Marys Airport Authority. He was a member of the St. Marys Board of Health and served as the Elk County Republican Chairman. With his wife, he co-owned and operated Lifetime Health, Inc., which, at the time, was the community’s only complete health and recreational facility. He also was involved in the founding of the High Education Council, now known as the Community Education Council.

Dr. Sorg was an avid hunter and outdoor enthusiast. In addition to extensively hunting locally, he enjoyed numerous backpack hunting trips across North America with the goal of achieving the North American 29. He loved outdoor hiking adventures, including climbing Mount Kilimanjaro and hiking numerous National Parks. His love of the outdoors and community service started at an early age, when he participated in scouting. He earned the rank of Eagle Scout and hiked Philmont. One of Dr. Sorg’s passions was to help as many others safely and successfully enjoy hunting and the outdoors. He founded Outdoor Sports Medicine, P.C., he authored “Basic Training for the Wilderness Hunter,” a reference for safety and preparation for outdoor adventures, gave numerous presentations on healthy hunting geared to the general public, and served as an invited speaker at many sporting conventions.

He had an unselfish love for his family and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, with whom he shared special bonds. He will always be remembered for his kindness to everyone he knew, for his generosity of his time and talents, always willing to help whenever he could, and for his enthusiastic love of life and of people. His philosophy was “Live one day at a time, for tomorrow is not promised to anyone.” He certainly left this world a better place and will be deeply missed by his friends, family, patients, and all who knew him. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
