James Edward Baker

James Edward Baker, 83, of 21211 CCC Memorial Hwy, Emporium, passed away on Wednesday (April 5th, 2017), at Lakeview Senior Care & Living Center, Smethport. Born August 7th 1933, in Springdale, PA, he was the son of the late James A. and Frances S. Baker. On January 22, 1955, in Westfield, NY, he married Sandra Fox, who survives.

Jim attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania on a football scholarship, received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1955 and later, a Master of Science degree from Penn State University in 1966. In 1958, after teaching for a short period at Plum High School in Pittsburgh, he moved his family to Emporium where he was a teacher of Biology and Zoology at Cameron County High School from 1958 to 1991. Although an inspired educator, “Mr. Baker” is perhaps best known as a coach. From 1960 to 1968 he headed the football program at CCHS. In 1968, he initiated the first wrestling program to which he applied the acronym “BAGUBA” (Brutally Aggressive Guys Uninhibited By Adversity), a trademark of CCHS wrestling that endures to this day. During his 6-year tenure, he coached 6 District IX champions and 21 D-9 place winners, amassing a career record of 44 wins, 38 losses and 1 tie. His legacy continued for decades with his son, who wrestled and also coached, and all three of his grandsons were BAGUBA wrestlers. After retiring as head coach, Jim became a PIAA wrestling official from 1976 to 1987. In 2014, he was awarded the BAGUBA Wrestling “Lifetime of Dedication” award and in 2016 he was inducted into the District IX Wrestling Hall of Fame.

Jim loved spending time with his family. He had a passion for firearms and also enjoyed gardening, fishing, and hunting.

In addition to his wife Sandy of 62 years, he is survived by a son, Scott (Kay) Baker of Emporium, and three daughters, Kim (the late Nick) Farina of Emporium, Kelly (Jeffrey) Wong of Stevensville, MD, and Kerry (Michael) Etchepare of Emporium, and a foster daughter, Roberta de Rosa of Warwick, RI; 6 grandchildren (Paul Baker, Mike Baker, Abby Etchepare, Paul Etchepare, Kristi Wong and Anna Wong) and one great-granddaughter (Jade Baker). "" Here we go again its raining and the river is rising. It looks like it will be raining for awhile yet tonight. I am still hopeful with a windy day and less showers on Friday that the Driftwood will crest and settle down a bit and be within our parameters come Saturday. With that said we will be on our higher end scale of water level.

I am going to have as many EMS folks as I can muster to keep an eye out and assist anyone that may have some issues. I am going to highly recommend that if you do not have experience paddling in higher faster water that you may want to set this year out.

A few paddling tips that may help. First don’t fear the water respect it. Make sure you have a good quality life jacket that FITS and is properly fitted to you. If you need to borrow a good one I have some available Please let me know ASAP. Very important Never Ever take your hands off your paddle your paddle is your prop it is what is going to keep you upright. Never grab the sides of the boat as soon as you do that, all control is lost. keep your boat as straight as possible keep your paddle in the water and just ride it through any heavy water you might find yourself in.

I will update again Friday and see where we stand. Fingers crossed AGAIN !!!

Questions give me a call or email. Also one more thing as for Wykoff run road it will not open till Monday I personally drove down Red run/mix run Rd into Driftwood tonight in my Rogue to avoid the detour and it was fine I had no issues if some of you don’t mind the dirt road.""

"MARK TWAIN" Coming to Emporium

"MARK TWAIN" Coming to Emporium....as told by storyteller Charles Kiernan Saturday April 29th 3:00 PM Emporium Fire Hall 519 N. Broad Street, Emporium, PA.

Charles, has, of late, been fobbing himself off as Mark Twain with some success. Twain is wont to ramble on about his boyhood memories, the newspaper publishing business, life on the Mississippi and frogs. Mostly, though, he likes to talk about the river. The intent of the show is to give the audience a bit of Twain's biography, his humor and his viewpoint. The subject for his talk is his evolving view on what is man. To illustrate his view on this subject at various points during his life, he feels compelled to give the audience some of his personal history (he being his favorite topic). His conclusions are what you might expect if you know something about Twain. It's the journey to that conclusion that is the fun.

We do request that there be no clothing donated if possible.
Any questions, call the center at 486-3707.
