Lost Dog

If anyone catches a glimpse of this little dog please reach out to Rebecca Hass Peters ( 814-594-7655), the dog catcher or his family Tonia. He slipped out of his collar on Moore Hill Wednesday night. We've been scouring the mountain, had a tracking dog come with no luck, and even walked the game lands road to Hicks Run without seeing tracks or any sign of him. Family says he is a very scared dog and doesn't come when called to. Please keep an eye out for him wherever you go and pray for a miracle

Pic of the Day

Last evenings storms brought much needed rain.
Several trees in the county were reported down after the storm.

Census Coloring Contest Deadline Extended

The Cameron County Commissioners, in conjunction with the US Census Bureau, have rolled out a children’s coloring contest in the past weeks to promote the 2020 Census. We are currently looking for prize donations from local businesses and organizations to be awarded to the winners. Aside from prize donations, we will also be looking for places to distribute the entry blanks. We would like to hold the contest over a two week period in order to allow time not only for the kids to complete their entries but also to get the word out about the contest. Tentatively, we are planning on running the contest from August 17th through the 28th. Please keep in mind that the prizes will be awarded to children 12 and under. If you would like to donate a prize or allow us to put entry blanks at your place of business, please contact James Moate. Please feel free to forward this email to any business or organization that you feel may be interested in participating in this contest in some capacity. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

Due to a lack of initial participation and to give parents more time to turn in entries while navigating the uncertainties involved with the beginning of the school year, the Commissioners have decided to extend the deadline for the Census 2020 Coloring Contest until Friday, September, 18th!

Please share this information with anyone who may be interested in participating, donating prizes, or who would like to distribute entries. Thank you everyone who has already made prize donations and to those establishments where you can currently pick up a contest entry.

At the time of this email, we currently have more prizes than we have entries. We hope this deadline extension will close that gap significantly.

If anyone would like new entry forms with the updated deadline or if you have any questions, concerns, or comments, please feel free to contact Commissioner James Moate at (814) 486-9325 Thanks again to everyone who has gotten involved so far!

Changes Coming for Christmas in the Wilds in Cameron County

Changes Coming for Christmas in the Wilds

Organizers of Christmas in the Wilds planning the event amid PA Department of Health restrictions. Usually held the second Saturday of December many of the events have been moved to the first weekend. “For years we have heard from hunters that having the event on the final day of deer season created a conflict,” explained Cameron County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tina Solak. The PA Game Commission has allotted three Saturdays to hunt, so many of the events associated with Christmas in the Wilds will be held December 4-5.

Many unknown factors have led to the parade moving to Friday December 4 at 6pm.. The chamber of commerce has been actively recruiting businesses, groups, and individuals to participate and light vehicles, and floats for the unique event. A tree lighting ceremony is in the early planning stages.

Saturday morning vendors will be encouraged to line Fourth Street and visitors invited inside Sarah Jane’s to visit with Santa. Breakfast with Santa may be canceled due to a restricted number of people allowed indoors at one time.

To keep with the second Saturday theme people will be encouraged to spend the evening looking at Christmas decorations and casting ballots for the best decorated homes. This year the contest will feature one winner from each of the five municipalities in Cameron County!Organizers say initial planning continues and more events may be added. Be sure to mark your calendars now for the date change for Christmas in the Wilds.

Barbara A. Smith

Barbara A. Smith, 71, of Rainbows End, Emporium, PA died suddenly, but peacefully at her residence early Friday morning (August 21, 2020). She was born February 15, 1949 in St. Marys, PA. She was a daughter of the late Mark J. and Regina Ann Kuntz Smith.
She was married to the late Dr. John Hipps, MD.

Barbie, as she like to be called was a graduate of Wilson High School of Wilson, NY. At an early age she was interested in the outdoors and animals of all types. She went on to study Biology at Rosary Hill College in Amherst, NY earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1971. Shortly after graduation she took her first job at the Sizerville State Park as a Park Ranger, which further solidified her love of nature. She continued this love throughout her life, educating herself on all forms of trees, flowers and wildlife across the Pennsylvania Wilds. Barbie was always willing to share her knowledge and gave talks and walks with anyone wanting to share the grandeur of nature. Barbie was also an adventurous spirit in the business world, where she embarked on a number of entrepreneur ventures, most of which were dedicated to the preservation and conservancy of the wilderness.

She was a resident of Galeton, PA for some years, but gravitated to the Emporium area for much of her adult life embracing the plentiful green spaces. She and her husband John partnered in their mutual love of the outdoors, culminating in 1987 with the start of Rainbow’s End Nature Sanctuary and Wildflower Reserve. This sanctuary and reserve has been promoting the care of all creatures small and great as well as educating visitors for over 30 years. Barbie was the Princess of the Mountain as her husband lovingly called her.

Barbie had a passion for many forms of music, was skilled at the organ and enjoyed singing. She was always willing to accompany or join in a sing-a-long. She enjoyed cooking and entertaining guests “up on the mountain”. In addition to promoting her love for nature in a personable setting, Barbie authored many articles for news print and composed poetry and stories of the wild. She was a welcomed guest speaker on wildflowers and the holistic control of invasive plants and animals. She was an avid hiker and loved to cross country ski and snow shoe.

Barbie was a member of the Emporium Garden Club and the Emporium Chamber of Commerce. She took part in many community activities that were in or of the outdoors.

She is survived by a sister, Mary Smith (Stephen Morse) of Virginia, six brothers, Stephen Smith of Oregon, George Smith (Seine) of Louisiana, Michael Smith (Bonnie) of Emporium, Richard Smith (Wendy) of York, David Smith (Tracy) of Maryland, James Smith (Elba) of Connecticut and 14 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

At her request there will be no visitation and a service will be arranged at a future date by the family.

Caldwell's @ the Nearby Potter County Farmers Market

The Potter County Farmer's Market will be meeting this Friday, August 21st, from 1 pm to 5 pm!
Here's a list of who plans on being there and what they plan on doing!

Joel and June Caldwell will be bringing plenty of this year’s new crop honey which is especially delicious. Floral sources are a combination of autumn olive, clover, blackberry, possibly basswood and others, all found around the Kenyon Farm in Hebron. We also have goldenrod honey from last fall. We are currently sold out of creamed honey. It was a huge hit!

Joanie’s Apiary will be there in Joel and June Caldwell's stand. Along with their honey, they make several products using their beeswax, such as candles, sunscreen, hand cream, and wood polish. What you do not see at our display checkout our items online at www.joaniesapiary.weebly.com

The Caldwell's, along with several other vendors, will have produce, breads, and crafts for sale.

Joel & June are both native Cameron County residents.

He enjoyed being around people, whether he was working or stopping by one of the many clubs he belonged to which included the American Legion in Sykesville, all the local VFW’s, the Eagles, IPS Club, the Pulaski, the Big O, or St. Joe’s Polish Club.

He really enjoyed grilling, organizing the family reunions, gardening, fishing, and birdwatching. Tom enjoyed the company of his faithful companion “Charlie”, his cat, which he had for many years. He loved to spend time with his family and particularly enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Tom’s heart was big and kind, he had a special love of supporting “Toys For Tots” every year, he never wanted to see a child go without a Christmas present. He often recruited his family to lend a helping hand for the cause, which created memories that will never be forgotten.

He is survived by three children, Sara Weaver and Joseph Winslow of Emporium, Thomas Paul (Lori) Weaver of Brookville, and Shawn (Bridget) Weaver of DuBois; stepdaughter, Susie Marie of Benezette; eight grandchildren, Kevin Jones, Courtney Daniels, Dylan Weaver, TJ Weaver, Lorinda, Donovan and Johnathan Uplinger and Shayna; one brother, Mike (Helen) Weaver of Luthersburg; one sister, Terri (Perry) Caruso of Emporium.
