Cameron County Project
Hello Fellow Residents and Cam Co Enthusiasts,
It's been a crazy summer -- as project coordinator for the Cam Co Project, I had to take a huge step back to heal from surgery and we've lost some momentum.
But we're back and September brings a Huge - FINAL push to collect your stories and to give you opportunities to share your hopes, dreams, and concerns. Story gathering will end on Sept. 30th.
Looking Ahead
October 1st, we'll begin taking all the stories you've shared and drafting Cameron County's Community Value Statements -- summarizing what we collectively view as the Heart and Soul of Cameron County. We’re also excited to begin really sharing the quotes and ideas, from the stories we've heard, back to residents, both the surprising and endearing.
We'll be spending November sharing the Community Value Statements, we've drafted with EVERYONE, asking, “Did we get this right?” Keep an eye out for ways to comment on what you think.
Once we're sure those Value Statements are correct, we'll be transitioning to Phase 3 of the Community Heart and Soul model: “Make Decisions”.
Beginning in December, everyone will be invited to take part in resident visioning sessions where we'll think about Cameron County's future through the eyes of each Value Statement. What we need to work on. What actions they require to thrive. What projects need to occur or cease. What ideas they inspire. Phase 3 is where our past meets our future -- and all the amazing ideas you've been sharing with us and the ideas you've yet to share, have the chance to become reality.
So, please, Please, PLEASE, if you haven't shared your "My Cameron County" story, reach out to us.
The stories we gather now, each of the unique ways you view our communities and interact with them, it all matters. The rich data each story holds will help us justify the projects and initiatives of positive growth in our future. How we get them approved, funded, implemented.
We've already learned so much from the over 500 stories, both thin and thick, we've collected from our fellow residents, young and old. We want you all to be a part of this, because you all matter. Please don't miss your chance to be heard!
Kind Regards from your neighbor,
Jess Herzing

He is a member of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and the American Podiatric Medical Association.
“I offer a wide range of surgical and non-surgical services from routine podiatry care to treatment of more serious conditions and trauma of the foot and ankle,” says Dr. Dresser. “Growing up in Emporium, Pa., I know how important it is for rural communities to have easy access to health care, including specialty care. Sgt. 1st Class, Matthew Hallowell
After speaking to his sister Deb, I wanted to share this wonderful article about Sgt. 1st Class, Matthew Hallowell, I3 Tactical Noncommissioned Officer. Hallowell, is native of Emporium, Pennsylvania. Thank you for your service.
#BackBone
This week we are featuring Sgt. 1st Class, Matthew Hallowell, I3 Tactical Noncommissioned Officer. Hallowell, native of Emporium, Pennsylvania, has been here at West Point just over a year. He originally enlisted in the Army as a 15P, Aviation Operations Specialist 16 years ago.
What are your roles and responsibilities as a TAC NCO?
I am involved in all of the training for the cadets. Were with them for the majority of their day from when they wake up in the morning to ensuring they maintain standards and discipline just like in a normal operational unit. We are basically a jack of all trades, if you will. We're heavily involved in their academics and their military training. We speak to their instructors when they're not doing well in class as a liaison between the cadet and the instructor. TAC NCOs have a constant one-on-one interaction with the future lieutenants of our Army.
What do you hope cadets will take away from you while you are here?
I hope that I establish what the standard is for an NCO when they get to their operational unit and they're counseling their platoon sergeant. I've taught them what an NCO should be and what they what they can expect from us.
From your perspective, why do you feel the NCO is the backbone of the Army?
I think we're the backbone of the Army because anything that goes on in an organization, whether it is training, standards or discipline, goes through an NCO. We're that first line of common sense.
What advice would you give to a junior leader coming up in the Army?
Do your duty, lead honorably, live honorably and demonstrate excellence.
Are there any moments that stick out to you that you will remember most while you've been a TAC NCO?
The summer trainings will always stick out. It's more of the field environment. For me specifically, it was at Cadet Basic Training last summer. That was my first exposure to West Point and new cadets when I first arrived here. The camaraderie that we were able to develop as a company was great.
Is your role here different than being a platoon sergeant in the regular Army?
I would say the only major difference would be the population. In the operational Army were training junior Soldiers who will take our position one day. Here we're making better platoon leaders so when they meet their platoon, they have the knowledge of what a good NCO should be.
Why do you feel the TAC NCO is so important to mold the future leaders in the Army?
Operationally, an officer has their role, and the NCOs role is to complement that officer. We're more of the standards and disciplinarians of the Army and we instill that sense of discipline and pride in the unit. The officers can speak to career progression and what it's like to be an officer, but we are here to show future officers what our role looks like before they graduate and move on to lead Soldiers.
This month we're talking about loyalty, which is one of the Army values. What does loyalty mean to you and how do you apply it to your life?
To live it means having faith that the leadership above you is going to have your back when the time comes. The same thing goes for the cadets. I demonstrate my loyalty to them and I'm willing to stand up and fight for them. Loyalty to me would be my superiors doing the same.

Sinnemahoning Gravel Race Includes Shorter Distance
Sinnemahoning Gravel Race Includes Shorter Distance
This week the Sinnemahone Triple Crown Committee agreed to add a shorter distance to the gravel race planned for Saturday September 28. The new distance is 14 miles and utilizes West Creek Rails Trails from Emporium to Truman. “Many people inquired about a shorter distance since they were new to biking,” says Cameron County Chamber of Commerce executive director Tina Solak. The Sinnemahone Triple Crown event created to encourage people of all skill levels to take advantage of the amazing natural resources found in Cameron County. This shorter distance shows off a portion of the trail linking Emporium and St Marys. The elevation is a slow increase, unlike the 55 mile gravel race. The Sinnemahone Gravel utilizes West Creek Rails Trails but heads to and through Sinnemahoning State Park covering 55 miles of trails in the Elk State Forest and returning to Emporium for the All Fired Up Kickin Ash BBQ Competition.

LAST CALL FOR PRE-ORDERS OF "THE GHOST WALK"
LAST CALL FOR PRE-ORDERS OF "THE GHOST WALK"
The Legacy Behind Cameron County's Civilian Conservation Corp Camps Presented by The Cameron County Historical Society Pre-orders are being accepted for a donation of $20 +$5 if you need it shipped.
Remembering .....Who were they? Where did they come from? Why did they come here? What did they do in Cameron County?
Roosevelt's Tree Army "The Ghost Walk" focuses on the thousands of starving young men who joined the Corp who came to Cameron County from the cities of Pennsylvania during the depression to help feed their families.
Although they were known mostly for planting thousands of trees to restore our forests after the lumber barons of the past had desecrated them. Their legacy extends beyond that. They surveyed and built forestry roads, and fire towers. They created the Sizerville Park Recreation Area. They even built a ferry after the 1936 flood to perform flood relief in nearby communities. Plus installed our "first telephone lines" in opening communications for us to the world. You can actual witness their work by the extensive photos included in the book.
The Corp created MEN who, gained multiple skill sets, education and most of all regained their dignity.
Christmas is not that far away this book would make a great Christmas Gift.
Checks can be made out to the Cameron County Historical Society and sent to PO Box 433; Emporium, PA 15834.

Hailstorms in Cameron County
Last evening, some severe storms swept through Cameron County. I did not notice any damage near my home, but other areas in the county reported trees down and power outages. One of the storms turned into a heavy hailstorm. This photo shows the size of some of the hail in my yard, but several Facebook posts had larger hailstone pictures.
MILITARY BANNERS
MILITARY BANNERS
As we pass the 5th Anniversary of the installation of the first round of Military Banners throughout the streets of Emporium, Sylvan Heritage Council has noticed a few banners whose pictures seem to have faded, or the banners themselves seem to have cracked a bit from the normal wear and tear of the seasons.
We would like to offer banner sponsors the chance to purchase a duplicate replacement banner to be re-hung this fall, if you feel your first banner is looking a little less than its original quality.
The replacement banners will be sold to you at cost, and you will receive the original banner back immediately, once the replacement has been hung.
The pricing of a replacement banner is listed below:
Single Banner (same picture and info on each side) $107.00
Double Banner
(two separate pictures on each side) $117.00
Please view your banner and contact Cindy Ramsey
(814-512-7095) by Tuesday, September 3 if you are interested in ordering a replacement.
If you live outside of the Emporium area and wish for our committee to take a look at your banner, we will be happy to view for you.

Emporium police department adds K-9
Emporium police department adds K-9: EMPORIUM, CAMERON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ)– The Emporium Borough Police Department now has a K-9 on duty. K-9 Novak and his handler, Officer Volker Kiefer, completed training on August 2.Novak is skilled in patrol work, article finding and tracking, but the biggest reason the department wanted him in Emporium is for his drug detection skills.
“The K-9 brings us another tool in our toolbox in our fight against drugs,” Kiefer said.
When the idea came up to borough council late last year, Chief David Merritt said Kiefer immediately volunteered to take on the role.
“Officer Kiefer took that position with pride,” Merritt said. “He put up with the 10, 12, 14 hour days of the heat we had the last month every day with that dog out training.”
The department received $25,000 in grants and several community donations to purchase everything needed.
“We were able to purchase the K-9, my training, outfit the car, including the heat alarm, all with no cost to the taxpayer,” Kiefer said.
Along with his police duties, Novak will be part of outreach in schools and the community.

Emporium Hardwoods Tour
Article by Amanda Jones for the Bradford Era
EMPORIUM — On Wednesday, officials of Lyme Timber Company offered a tour of the newly-refurbished Emporium Hardwoods operation on Route 120 south of Emporium.
The tour was the third of three events held in Cameron, Potter and McKean counties highlighting Lyme Timber Company’s recent, significant investments in north central Pennsylvania, including the purchase of more than 60,000 acres of timberland and monetary investments in related companies in the region.
The Emporium Hardwoods location currently boasts the most technologically-advanced sawmill operation in the United States. Following a devastating fire in 2017 that did millions of dollars in damages, the mill was completely renovated and reconstructed.
Mill owner Ted Rossi “chose to rebuild with state-of-the-art design and technology, creating a nationally acclaimed mill,” according to information released by Lyme Timber. During the reconstruction, employees were kept on, training as lumber graders and in other positions, and learning new skills while helping to construct the buildings and infrastructure for the new facility.
The new mill is a multi-story operation, with many workers in climate-controlled pods operating machinery through a computer system. It is quite unlike the sawmills that have been built and used in the region throughout history. It is clean, modern and efficient, with lasers measuring to make precision cuts and leaving as little waste behind as possible.
Nothing is actually wasted, as all parts of the logs are sold — boards, bark, chips and sawdust, according to mill manager Patrick Narby, who served as a tour guide during the event.
As the logs are dropped off in the log yard, each one is tagged with a barcode that is then scanned. Each log can be tracked, beginning with who dropped it off and continuing all the way through the mill until it exits the other end as a finished board.
The mill processes between 25 and 35 truckloads of wood per day, and logs are harvested within a 50-100 mile radius from Emporium Hardwoods.
The mill was built vertically, making it easier to keep areas cleaned out and eliminating buildup of sawdust and wood chips, which can be a fire hazard.
Following the completion of the new mill, Lyme Timber Company, named after the town in New Hampshire where it was founded in 1976, made a significant minority investment in the company following the purchase of approximately 65,000 acres of land in north central Pennsylvania.
The majority of the land purchased by Lyme is in Potter, Cameron and McKean counties, with smaller tracts in Venango, Elk, Erie, Warren, Clinton and Jefferson counties. The properties were formerly owned by the Hammermill Paper Company, which held over 150,000 acres of forest filled with high-quality hardwood timber, including black cherry, sugar maple, red maple, ash and red oak.
Lyme has also established Three Rivers Forest Management, based in Coudersport, to oversee the Pennsylvania acreage, and invested in Northern Appalachia Log and Forestry (NALF), a log marketing and export business based in Coudersport.
Lyme received a $50 million loan to finance the land acquisition through the Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST), which offers lower-interest loans with favorable terms. In return, Lyme has provided a Working Forest Conservation Easement of more than 9,000 acres in the Sterling Run area of Cameron County that can be used for recreational purposes that do not damage the forestland, with an offer of an additional 50,000 acres available for easement purchase by the state. In addition, $750,000 has been pledged for remediation work on streams with acid mine drainage (AMD) contamination in the Sterling Run area. In total, Lyme Timber Company owns and manages over 750,000 acres of timberland in Pennsylvania, California, Florida, New York, Tennessee and West Virginia.
“PENNVEST’s loan secured immediate local clean water benefits and created the opportunity to realize more significant clean water benefits in the future through the purchase of working forest conservation easements,” according to Lyme representatives.
“Through its timberland ownership, and related investments in Three Rivers, Emporium Hardwoods and NALF, Lyme-related businesses are providing over 110 quality direct jobs in the forest products industry,” according to a Lyme release. “To meet our sustainable harvest objectives, we expect to grow the Three Rivers team, add logging contractors, and support the continued growth of the businesses in which we have invested.”
Emporium Hardwoods is one of Cameron County’s top employers, with nearly 100 employees currently. Pennsylvania is the largest single state producer of American hardwood lumber in the United States. Logging was one of the first major industries in north central Pennsylvania, and is an important part of regional history and culture.
Pa's New Outdoor Recreation Plan Underway
Some of you might remember a online survey about Pennsylvania's recreation activities that was given during December of 2018 and May and June of this year. Some of you may have participated in it. A total of 8,676 reportedly did respond.
Every five years states are required to come up with a new statewide recreation plan and this plan helps them remain eligible for federal grants to further recreation activities for the public.
While Pennsylvania is still within the 2014 Outdoor Recreation Plan, they are working on the
2020 - 2024 plan.
The final document will be presented to the National Park Service early in 2020, but citizens and others interested will be able to review and comment about the drafted suggestions in
October of 2019.
