Paulette C. Schreiber

Paulette C. Schreiber, 61, of 265 Old Kersey Road, Kersey, passed away Sunday, November 22, 2015, at her home surrounded by her family after a lengthy illness.

She was born June 11, 1954, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Louis B. Luchini and Hazel Lavella Luchini who survives of Kersey. She was a lifelong resident of the area and graduated from the Elk County Christian High School, Class of 1972, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, Class of 1976, and from Penn State University in 1997 as a Nurse Practitioner. Since 1976, Paulette had worked at the local hospital and in 2000 she instituted the Women’s Health Care Center at Penn Highlands Elk.

On June 10, 1978, in the St. Boniface Church, she married Robert J. Schreiber, Jr., who survives. She is also survived by a daughter, Rachel Schreiber and her fiancé Seth Rhed of Kersey; a son, Joseph R. Schreiber of Black Mountain, NC; a sister, Barbara Handwerger and her husband Joseph of St. Marys; and by many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by the Schreiber family, who considered her their sister.

Paulette’s extraordinary talents led her to have a successful practice in women’s health care. She was consumed in her work and provided conscientious, compassionate, empathetic care to all of her clients. Paulette cared about her patients and that was evident in her focus of women’s health issues. She wanted to see her women long-term.

She also served in the community that she loved. She would often give talks providing education, advocacy, and outreach support on most any health care issue she was asked to speak about, including the Susan G. Komen, PA Breast Cancer Coalition, American Cancer Society, and Environmental Health Conferences. On her days off from seeing patients, you could spot her tirelessly attending health fairs.

In addition to the fact that she was beautiful inside and out, she was a wonderful sense of humor and laughed often. Paulette never backed away from any challenge in her life, a trait that served her well as she faced cancer diagnoses, surgeries, and chemotherapy. Knowledge, strength, and grace would define Paulette. She was poised and she was graceful.

Unfortunately, her own cancer took her life. She learned what terminal illness can teach. She did not let her cancer get her down. Paulette did not take her life for granted. Her life was much richer because of it.

Her death is a loss not just to her loved ones, friends, colleagues, and patients, but for the entire area. Paulette was loved by her patients and in return she loved them back.

She was a member of the St. Boniface Church, where she served as a lector and an usher. What Paulette enjoyed most was spending time with her family, especially her children. Our family would not be the same without her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the St. Boniface Church on Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at 10:00 AM, with the Rev. Ross Miceli, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Boniface Cemetery.

Visitation is at the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 24, 2015, from 5:00 until 8:00 PM.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Penn Highlands Elk, c/o Women’s Health Care, in memory of Paulette Schreiber, 763 Johnsonburg Road, St. Marys, PA 15857.

Taking a Step Back in Time

Taking a Step Back in Time

A group of Cameron County families have been taking a step back in time. Community Supportive Network buys weekly raw milk from Gods Country Creamery in Ulysses, purchases bulk natural pantry staples and hosts monthly meetings to teach each other new skills surrounding healthy living.

In the past, the group has gathered to make herbal skin care products like lip balm and homemade herbal medicinals. They currently sell their own homemade soap at the Aroma Café, where some of the meetings are held.

During Christmas in the Wilds Saturday, December 12, the group will offer soap for sale and have information available to any other residents that may be interested in participating in what they have to offer. The group, which meets the 2nd Thursday of every month, hopes more people will be interested in making soap, learning about bees, and participating in picnics and pot lucks. They want to continue to spread the word about taking a step back in time and showing people how important it is to have community be a part of everyone’s lives.

The name Community Supportive Network is the heart of this group. They help each other when in need, teach each other new skills and support local businesses.

For more information seek out their table during Christmas in the Wilds or send an email to Jen Kelly at jennz3@zitomedia.net.

Participate In Ski Denton Online Survey

Harrisburg – Department of Conservation and Natural Resources officials today announced the department is nearing completion of a feasibility study for Denton Hill State Park, Potter County. The study, coordinated by Moshier Studio in Pittsburgh, will provide a comprehensive evaluation of the existing infrastructure as well as an in-depth look at long-term potential for skiing and other potential year round activities at the park.

To facilitate the public input process, DCNR is offering the opportunity for public feedback through an online survey. The survey is available through Nov. 30 at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/DentonHillVisions

DCNR staff and Mosher Studio personnel will hold a public meeting January 2016. The meeting will be an open house format designed to review the data collected to date and present the study’s recommended direction regarding ski operations or other four-season recreational opportunities at Denton Hill.

“Our team looks forward to sharing the feasibility study’s findings with Denton Hill’s constituents,” said Bureau of State Parks Director David Kemmerer. “Input from the public acquired through venues like the Denton Hill State Park: Visions for the Future survey will help DCNR determine a future course of action for operations at Denton Hill State Park.”

Denton Hill State Park was opened as a ski area in 1958 and operated by the commonwealth until 1979. In 1983, DCNR signed a 35-year concession lease agreement with Denton Hill Family and Ski Resort, Inc. The concessionaire notified DCNR in November 2014 that they would no longer be able to operate. Ski operations were closed for the winter of 2014-2015. Although no ski operations are taking place, the park continues to host special events and recreational activities supported by the existing infrastructure.

For more information on any of Pennsylvania’s 120 state parks visit DCNR website at www.dcnr.state.pa.us (choose Find a Park) or call toll-free 888-PA-PARKS.

THIS SATURDAY! Camp Forgotten!

THIS SATURDAY! Camp Forgotten!

This movie will be shown Saturday November 14, 2015 from 1-3 PM at the Chamber of Commerce at 34 East 4th street, sponsored by the Cameron County Historical Society.

In 1933, during the worst depression the US had ever seen, President Roosevelt created the Civilian Conservation Corps . Over a ten year period, this work relief program employed over three million young men between the ages of 17 to 25. They were placed in camps located in America's wilderness and put to work restoring damaged natural resources. The camps were run by the army, while the work projects were supervised by the Department of Agriculture and interior. Thesemen fought forest fire, repaired damaged river banks, built parks, planted forests engaging in thousands of conservation projects a legacy we still enjoy today.

Although this film is based in Michigan it mirrors what took place here in Cameron County in our (6) camps that spanned the entire county. Much of our forest that we see today was replanted by them, Sizerville State Park, Three Runs Tower Rd., Jerry Run Rd & Trail, Pepper Hill Foot Trail and constructed telephone lines from Emporium to Sinnemahoning and so much more.

The movie will take about an hour leaving the balance of our time for those who might have local CCC memorabilia they would like to share with the group or possibly descendants of CCCer's who want to share their our personal stories.

We'd love to see ya. Grab a grandparent, another family member or a friend and learn the history behind the CCCers at the Chamber of Commerce in Emporium, Saturday November 14, 2015 1-3 PM

They will then proceed to the Cameron County Courthouse for wreath laying, a prayer by the American Legion Auxiliary, rifle salute and Taps.

Play The Game And Everyone Wins

Cameron County Chamber of Commerce hosting a scavenger hunt during Shop Small Saturday November 28. Shoppers will visit businesses in the Emporium area and answer questions, sing, dance, find hidden clues while shopping for holiday gifts! “The business owners are very creative and this event will provide a fun time for shoppers,” according to Tina Johns Solak, executive director of the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce.

Shoppers can pick up the clue sheet from participating businesses starting November 16. Businesses will have signage in windows indicating they are hosting the scavenger hunt. Following the hunt, shoppers can return the completed sheet to the chamber office to be entered into a drawing for gift certificates.

New this year will be the addition of a Make-it-Take-it hosted by the First Baptist Church on Broad Street in Emporium. Children will make gifts for family members while parents shop. The gifts will even be wrapped, ensuring that adults don’t peek till Christmas! The event is free 10-noon. A soup lunch will be made available for a price following the Make-it-Take-it.

Shopping local is very important for small communities. “If shoppers head to big box stores, they spend their money at a place where community is not their priority plus they risk duplication of gifts,” says Solak. For every dollar spent at a local hardware, grocery, or retail shop 45 cents comes back to the community. Purchase it elsewhere and 15 cents comes back, and if you purchase online, no money comes back locally.

For those that live out of the area and would like to support Cameron County, the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce web site at www.cameroncountychamber.org is offering a gift buying section. All items are made by artists in the region and 100% of the money stays in small communities. They can be purchased using the online store, or reserved with a phone call for pick up.

This season shop local and keep the money local.

Decking The Doors

Businesses in Emporium will be competing this holiday season. Shoppers can vote for the business with the best decorated wreath hung on the door and vote at the store/restaurant/financial institution of their choice. The winner will receive a free chamber membership for 2016. Voting will begin with Shop Small Saturday November 28 through Christmas in the Wilds December 12.

To make it easier to shop in Emporium, parking will be free starting November 20 through December 31. Emporium Borough Council approved the gift to shoppers. The parking meters will be decorated by volunteers on Friday November 20.
If you would like to help, contact the chamber office.

Cameron County Community Chest 2016 Fund Drive – Nov. Update

We are five weeks into the 2016 fund drive. Over 200 letters have gone out to local individuals, businesses and organizations. We have had a great start. Through Nov. 3rd, we have collected $5,576.50 toward our $20,200 goal. Thanks to all who have contributed. This drive will run through September 30, 2016.

Watch for our monthly updates. Each month we will feature a write up on one of the organizations that the Cameron County Community Chest contributes to. This month’s feature will be the Cameron County Recreation Board.

Cameron County Recreation Center provides many different services to the local community. The main focus is to provide a safe but fun environment for area youth to enjoy. The game room is open Tuesdays through Saturday and offers a variety of table games and electronic gaming. The membership also includes use of the outdoor basketball court. They have two rooms available for rent for meetings and parties. The large room is the most popular for parties and can be rented for a minimal fee. There is no charge for business rentals. Tables and chairs can be rented (when available) as well as outdoor party games. Various exercise classes are also available each week. Please contact the Center for more information or check out their Facebook page. The Recreation Center will continue to collaborate with the 4-H program to provide out of school programs for youth ages 8-18 as well as summer 4-H programs. This summer, two local playgrounds were supervised, South Park and Third Street. The participants enjoyed two presentations from Cameron County Conservation, a mini wildlife fair sponsored by CCOYA and several trips to the school pool. Cameron County Recreation is also responsible for organizing and scheduling games for the girls and boys elementary basketball program.

Cameron County Recreation Center is funded partly by the County, Emporium Foundation and Community Chest. The 4-H and summer programs are funded entirely by grants from the Emporium Foundation. For questions about any of the programs that are provided please contact the Recreation Director, Holly Manginell by phone 814-486-8915 or by email at camcorecreation@gmail.com.

No donation/memorial is too small. Please send your tax-deductible contribution to: Cameron County Community Chest, PO Box 134, Emporium, PA. 15834, Attn: Judd Schager. Help to support the Recreation Board, Community Nurses, Red Cross, Friends of the Library, the Package Team, and the Garden Club.
