Franklin A. "Frank" Metzler

 
Franklin A. "Frank" Metzler. 85, of Bucktail Trail died of cancer on Saturday, Dec.
22, 2012 at the DuBois Regional Medical Center following an illness of the past year.
He was born July 3, 1927 in Harrisburg a son of the late Franklin Metzler Sr. and
Beryl Lavanture Metzler.
On May 31. 1981 in Emmanuel Episcopal Church, Emporium, he married Sandra Kellner Metzler who survives.
Frank served in the U.S. Navy during WW II on the communications ship Catoctin as a
radio operator with the title of Electronics Technician Mate. At that time the U.S. was
preparing to invade Japan, which was expected to be an extensive battle, and crew
members were advised that only one out of six of them would return home. The mission
w'as discontinued when the war ended in August 1945 with the unconditional surrender of Japan. Frank was honorably discharged on July 15. 1946.
He was a graduate of Penn State University with a BS degree in Physics, and the
University of Pittsburgh at Bradtbrd earning a degree in computer science. At the time of
his death he was employed parl-time as an independent contractor at GE in St. Marys.
Employment history includes Bethlehem Steel in Steelton. Sylvania & GKN in
Emporium and Loranger Intemational in Warren.
Frank enjoyed hiking the Quehanna Trail, amateur radio, astronomy and studying
advanccd mathematics.
in addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, David and Glenn Metzler, and a
brother, Robert Metzler.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial for Franklin A. “Frank" Metzler will be held on
Saturday, December 29, 2012 at 2 p.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Emporium.
There will be no visitation.

James E. Abriatis


James E. Abriatis, 65, of 6902 Route 120, Emporium died unexpectedly at Soldiers & Sailors Hospital, Wellsboro on Friday (December 21, 2012) afternoon.
He was born September 30, 1947 in Castle Shannon, PA a son of the late Paul "Pete" and Mildred Renton Abriatis.
On October 29, 2011 in he married Beverly Crosby Abriatis, who survives.
Mr. Abriatis graduated from Cameron County High School. He served with the US Navy Seabees during the Vietnam Era. He was a heavy equipment operator who operated various machines. He was most happy while operating the equipment. Jim was a member of the Miller-Raffaele Post 6221, VFW. He loved NASCAR, Steelers, hunting and 4 wheeling. He coached girls softball for his daughters teams for many years and enjoyed spending time with his family.

Funeral Service will be held at the Barnett Funeral Home, 207 E. Fourth Street, Emporium on Monday (December 24, 2012) at 11:00 AM with Rev. Joseph Short, Pastor, First United Methodist Church, officiating. A Military Service will be accorded by the Cameron County Memorial Detail. Visitation with video tribute will be at the Barnett Funeral Home on Sunday from 3-6 PM.

Burial will be in the Rich Valley Cemetery, Emporium, Pennsylvania

James N Gratton


James N. Gratton, 85, of Erie, formerly of Emporium, died Tuesday, December 18, 2012 in St. Vincent Health Center, Erie.
Born August 21, 1927 in Emporium he was the son of the late John and Bessie Woodring Gratton. On May 17, 1944 in Emporium, he married H. Margaret Mitchell who survives.
A longtime resident of Emporium, he was employed by GTE Sylvania and Philips in Emporium before retiring in 1981.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a former member of Bobby’s Run Hunt Club.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Margaret, are: one son, James N. Gratton, Jr. and wife Janice of Northwest, PA; one daughter, Bess Heiberger and husband Joseph of Palmetto, Georgia; two grandchildren, Brian Heiberger and Jason Gratton; three great grandchildren; and also nieces and nephews including a special niece and nephew, Laurie and Ponch.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by four sisters, Winifred, Katherine, Geraldine and Nellie and two brothers, John and Arnold.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 20 from 4-7 p.m. in the Coppersmith-Condon Funeral Home, Emporium where Funeral Services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Paul Siebert, pastor of St. Mark Church, Emporium, officiating. Burial will be in St.Mark Cemetery, Emporium.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice

Carl J Schager

Carl J. Schager, 95, of Route 120, Emporium died at Guy & Mary Felt Manor, Emporium on Wednesday (December 12, 2012) morning following a lengthy illness.
He was born October 18, 1917 in Emporium a son of the late Anthony and Mary Swasnick Schager.
On July 13, 1946 in St Gabriel The Archangel Parish, Port Allegany he married Naomi "Polly" Pollard Schager, who Survives.

Mr. Schager was a lifelong resident of Emporium. He graduated from Emporium High School in the class of 1937. He retired, after over 42 years, from Sylvania where he was a metal machinist. He enlisted with the US Navy during WW II. He was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church. Carl had many hobbies including golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing and wood crafting. His favorite hobby was making spoon rings and giving them to many people in the area

EMPORIUM, Pa. —
A 62-year-old Cameron County woman is recovering after receiving an injury while trying to stop a robbery in her business.
Betty Allen of Emporium told 6 News it was around 6:30 a.m. when a man wearing dark baggy clothes and a mask came into her store, Krazy "A" Dog Kennel in Shippen Township.
Allen told 6 News the man said, "today is going to be your lucky day," and began going through the cash register.
Allen said the many got away with a few hundred dollars.
While trying to leave the store, Allen attempted to remove his hood and mask to reveal the suspects identity.
"I tried to grab onto him, he turned around and kicked me in my side and in my back and I fell to the floor," she said.
Allen said the man got away.
She told police she was unable to see what direction he went because she could not get up.
"That showed me that whoever was under that clothing is not a true man. He was out for himself, and himself only. That just isn't right," she said.
Allen is offering a $1,000 reward to anyone that can provide information that leads to an arrest.
Anyone with information should call state police in Emporium at 486-3321.

State Police Seek Help In Robbery

State Police at Emporium are asking the public's help in their investigation of an early morning robbery at the Krazy A Dog Kennel at 11233 Route 120, 2 miles west of Emporium in Shippen Township, Cameron County.

On Thursday (today) at about 6:40 AM, an unidentified male actor entered the Krazy A Dog Kennel and was able to open the cash register and remove cash and coin currency. Betty Allen, 62, of Emporium, PA, the victim and owner of the business, attempted to intervene by preventing the actor from fleeing. During her attempt, she was assaulted by the male and sustained an injury. Due to being assaulted, she was unable to see in what direction the male fled the scene.


Trooper Farabaugh said the actor fled on foot and at this time it is unknown of a vehicle was used to facilitate his flight. Anyone who may have seen any vehicles parked in the area during time frame that this occurred or any other suspicious or unusual activities or persons, please contact the PA State Police at Emporium at 814-486-3321.

Judy I. Hallowell

 
Judy I. Hallowell, 64, of 777 Hillcrest Drive, Emporium, died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Tuesday (December 4, 2012) afternoon.
She was born December 31, 1947 in Renovo, PA a daughter of the late Benjamin and Anna Mae Nickerson Wennin.
On September 20, 1968 in Sinnamahoning she married the late Willard Hallowell.

Mrs. Hallowell graduated from Cameron County High School in the class of 1966. She worked several years at Sylvania and then retired from GKN Sintered Metals where she worked for over 40 years. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church and the Loyal Order Of Moose Lodge #368, Emporium. Judy enjoyed meeting with her friends for coffee every day at the Cabin Kitchen and also at the Aroma Cafe'

Tax Credits, Emporium, San Francisco Chronicle

Emporium referenced during talk of Pennsylvania film tax credits.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The state could see a lot more lights, cameras, action and jobs if lawmakers expand the $60 million film tax credit, Pennsylvania film officials say.....

The credit needs to be at least $100 million, said Pittsburgh Film Office director Dawn Keezer. Pennsylvania has two major production centers — Philadelphia and Pittsburgh — and attracts crews to rural areas like Emporium, where the Denzel Washington flick "Unstoppable" shot in 2010, she said.

Delores F. Rodgers, 65, of 34 Pioneer Rd., Emporium, PA
died at Elk Regional Health Center, St. Marys on Sunday (December 2, 2012) morning.

She was born June 22, 1947 in Houtzdale, PA a daughter of the late Llewelyn and Dora Fae Rowles Cardinal
On December 10, 1966 in St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Houtzdale she married Patrick Rodgers, who survives.
Mrs. Rodgers graduated from Moshannon High School, Houtzdale in the class of 1965. She worked as an LPN at the Cameron County Health Center until she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2000. She loved nursing and put her heart into caring for other people. She was a member of St. Mark Catholic Church and the C.D. of A. She was an active participant in daily prays for others at her church.

Confession Given On Township Burglary

An Emporium woman will be charged as a result of a Burglary that occurred on November 30, 2012 at a residence in Shippen Township, Cameron County.

Christina Marie Uber, 26, of 318 Spring Street, Emporium, PA, will be charged in the incident at the residence of Annetta Marie Horning of 15680 Route 120, Emporium, PA.


Trooper Michael G. Meko, who is investigating, said Christina Uber called Horning the following day after she had heard that PSP was involved and had taken fingerprints at the scene. She identified herself to the victim and confessed to the crime she had committed.

Multiple items were stolen from the victim's residence in the burglary.

Uber will be charged with Burglary, Theft by Unlawful Taking, and Criminal Mischief in District Court 59-3-01.
