Hamot and Regional Partner With Grant For Patient Care
Erie, Pa. - In just a few short months, significant progress has been made in providing greater access to advanced medical care to three regional hospitals thanks to a federal grant awarded to Hamot Medical Center in September 2010.
Former U.S. Rep. Kathy Dahlkemper presented Hamot with the $99,000 Health and Human Services grant in mid-September, a grant for which Hamot applied with Charles Cole Memorial Hospital in Coudersport, Elk Regional Health Center in St. Marys, Kane Community Hospital in Kane and Bradford Regional Medical Center in Bradford. The grant was requested specifically to help facilitate transportation of critically ill patients.
Equipment caches were ordered and delivered to each of the rural hospitals on Jan. 21, where they will be permanently located. The cache of equipment includes a portable ventilator, a wireless device to monitor vital signs and a state-of-the-art portable IV pump. Each of the hospitals received this cache of equipment so EMS units can borrow them from the regional hospital directly, which will help decrease the delay times when transferring patients. Currently, the transfer of critically ill patients from the rural hospitals can be significantly delayed as a result of several factors. The availability of this equipment will help eliminate that.
“The purchase of this equipment will help put an end to critically-ill patients having to wait for a hospital transfer,” Rep. Dahlkemper said. “This equipment will save lives because it will give Hamot doctors the chance to provide the best care possible, as fast as possible. This grant is a great benefit for our rural communities.”
Hamot Medical Center officials said that adding the equipment to rural hospitals will begin to reduce health care disparities in rural areas, improve hospital efficiencies and save lives.
“This grant, due to Rep. Dahlkemper’s leadership, supports our philosophy of local care and provides patients with better access to advanced medical care when it is needed. It is providing essential medical equipment that is needed onsite to stabilize the patient and if necessary, transfer them to a higher level of care,” said Val Jackson, the regional director of the Hamot Heart Institute.
"Thanks to Rep. Dahlkemper’s leadership and our partnership with Hamot, Elk Regional has been able to take a very big step toward eliminating the delay in hospital transfers for critically ill patients,” said Gregory P. Bauer, the president and CEO of Elk Regional Health Center. “This equipment is going to save lives by offering critically ill patients in our rural region greater access to advanced medical care.”
J. Gary Rhodes, a Vice President of Hamot Health Foundation and the CEO of Kane Community Hospital noted, “We're happy about this grant and once again, through our partnership with Hamot Medical Center, we're seeing the excellent benefits of that affiliation.”
David Kobis, the Chief Operating Officer at Bradford Regional Medical Center, said he is excited about what the grant will mean for patients who live in his community.
“This grant will allow Bradford to secure an autoventitalor and IV pump that will expedite the transfer and treatment of acutely ill patients. This additional equipment will enable the hospital to enhance our service levels and quality of care to patients throughout the Bradford region,” he said.

Ridgway Laboratory Earns CAP Accreditation
The Laboratory at Elk Regional Health Center’s Ridgway campus has earned a national accreditation from the College of American Pathologists, placing it in an exclusive group of laboratories that meet the highest standards for care.
“This puts us in an exclusive group,” said Gregory Bauer, ERHS President and CEO. “The CAP’s standards for accreditation are both rigorous and demanding. To earn CAP accreditation takes a great deal of work and dedication and I thank everyone in our laboratory department for their continued commitment to excellence.”
Elk Regional’s Ridgway Laboratory earned the accreditation after an on-site inspection by personnel from the College of American Pathologists. As part of the inspection, Laboratory records and the quality control procedures used in the lab over the last two years were scrutinized.
Inspectors also examined the qualifications of the Laboratory’s staff, equipment, facilities, safety program and safety record, in addition to the overall management of the department.
“We are very excited to have received this accreditation,” said Dr. Joe Salinas, the laboratory’s medical director. “I’m pleased to say we have met or exceeded the standards set by the College of American Pathologists, which are more stringent than those imposed by the federal government.”
The College of American Pathologists is a medical society made up exclusively of Board-certified pathologists and is widely considered to be the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The College began its accreditation program in the early 1960s.

Local Mishaps
Minor injuries were reported for a Sinnemahoning driver following a one-vehicle mishap last Wednesday morning on Route 120 in Gibson Township, Cameron County. State police, overnight, reported 27 year old Dawn Long was traveling west when her Ford Focus went out of control after hitting a patch of ice on a left curve. The compact went off the road, struck an embankment, rolled over and came to rest on its wheels on the north side of the road. Long is being cited for failing to give immediate notice to authorities.
An Emporium woman suffered moderate injuries Saturday afternoon when her car was struck in the side by another while traveling east from Walmart into the Country Fair Parking lot in Fox Township, Elk County. Ridgway-based state police said the collision occurred when Anne Sorg of St. Marys ran a red light and allowed her Dodge Durango to run into the side of a Ford Taurus driven by Frances Vermillion who was taken to Elk Regional Medical Center. Sorg and a passenger in Vermillion’s car, Jerry McDivitt also of Emporium, escaped injury. Sorg is charged with failing to stop at a red light.
Troopers at Emporium have cited a driver from that town with improper backing following a fender bender Saturday morning at the Kwik Fill on E. Allegheny Avenue. Authorities say Judy Hallowell backed her Ford Taurus into the front of a Dodge Intrepid driven by Richard Flynn of Grampian, PA while they were both parked at the store’s gas pumps. Police claim Hallowell pulled forward and left the scene but was later located.

Hemlock Invader hits Close to Home
The weekend before deer season, as my father and I crossed the farm where my great-grandfather had settled after immigrating from Europe, we came across a hemlock bough that had been broken out of a nearby tree.
My stomach churned — it was covered in small, white, cottony masses, the telltale sign of the hemlock wooly adelgid.
The Zoschg homestead lies in the First Fork Valley in Cameron County, about five miles north of Sinnemahoning. In 2008 I had found evidence of the adelgid on state forest land on the opposite side of the valley. Since then, I had suspected its presence on our property.
Hemlock wooly adelgid has been killing hemlock trees in eastern forests since its introduction in the 1950s. In 2007, Forestry Bureau personnel ....MOREhttp://coudynews.com/news/hemlock-invader-hits-close-to-home/

The Elk Regional Capital Campaign Enjoying Strong Community Support
The Elk Regional Capital Campaign steering committee has announced that the Health System family has pledged $1.44 million – more than half of the campaign’s $2.5 million goal. And just five months into the campaign, Elk Regional already has more than $429,000 in donations in-hand from community foundations, local corporations and several individuals in Elk and Cameron counties.
Don W. Fleming, the campaign’s chairman, said he is pleased with the campaign’s results to date.
“I am proud to say that the Health System family and the community have made such a strong show of support for both the campaign and the building project,” Fleming said. “I believe this project is the single most important thing we can do to ensure a bright future for our hospital.”
The Health System family includes volunteers, employees, medical staff, the Board of Directors, the Health System’s Auxiliary and the Health System’s Foundation. The total $1.44 million pledge amount includes a $250,000 pledge from the Health System’s Auxiliary and a dollar-for-dollar match to employee giving, up to $500,000, from the Health System’s Foundation.
Gregory P. Bauer, the president and CEO of the Health System and the chairman of the Health System family giving campaign, said the support is “a wonderful thing to see.”
“Our Health System family has a big heart, and its members never hesitate to give of themselves,” Bauer said. “They show it time and time again, from their efforts to give back to our community to their support of this capital campaign. I have always been impressed and humbled by their generosity.”
Efforts are now underway to broaden the campaign throughout the community. The campaign’s first community solicitation included local foundations, large businesses and several individuals throughout the region.
The second phase of the campaign is now under way. In coming weeks, community members and small- and medium-sized businesses throughout the area will have an opportunity to make a gift to the campaign.
Later this spring, individuals throughout the region will be able to make a gift, in any amount, to the campaign as part of the Health System’s annual appeal. Online donations via PayPal, credit or debit card will be made available by February.
Launched in mid-August, The Elk Regional Capital Campaign is a $2.5 million fundraising effort designed to support the hospital’s $10.3 million building project.
Elk Regional will construct a new floor that will house 42 private medical/surgical patient rooms, each with a private bathroom, along with a new 10-bed geriatric behavioral health unit. In addition, Elk Regional will construct a new maternity unit that will contain eight rooms, each with a private bathroom. Four of those rooms will be for OB/GYN patients and four will be for labor, delivery and recovery patients.
Construction on the new floor will begin this spring and will be complete by the end of 2012.
